About this property

Historic La Cumbre - Easy Writer House

NEWLY LISTED

One of the finest remaining authentic adobe compounds in Taos County, the La Cumbre property, now 5 private houses on nearly 10 acres, dates back more than 400 years. First built as a Spanish fortress between the Picuris and Taos Pueblos, this historic adobe compound at the end of the High Road evolved into a guest ranch by the early 1900’s and is known to have hosted many of the great artists, writers and scholars drawn to the Southwest during this period.

Located on the South side of town, under a mile from Kit Carson National Forest, the St Francis de Asís Church of Ranchos de Taos, a National Historic Landmark, and under 10 minutes drive to Taos Plaza, Easy Writer is an artist's escape for the quintessential Taos experience.

Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson, was filmed on location in Taos, NM in 1968. The film would become emblematic of 60’s counterculture and spark the New Hollywood era of filmmaking. The Easy Writer house is an artist’s space, a unique and minimal dwelling unlike anywhere you’ve ever stayed. This stand alone home boasts a private adobe courtyard and consists of two sides connected by a central open portal, a kitchen and light filled living room/studio on one half, and a bedroom, writing desk, walk through closet and bathroom on the other. This house is heated traditionally by wood fire only.

Casita is antiquated

The stay is highly traditional as in the structure is highly dated but super clean with luxury linens and touches. Host was detailed in check in instructions and responded quickly. Overall would recommend.

My husband and I are both artists. I am a photographer and global educator originally from the UK. After many years living in New York, Los Angeles and abroad we have settled in beautiful Taos, NM with our two daughters.

Why they chose this property

Talpa is a historical community at the base of the high road to Taos, which is a beautiful mountain pass that leads to Santa Fe (1.5 hours). Talpa is a verdant valley just 10 minutes from the Carson National Forest, with a great deal of hiking. Taos center is just 12 minutes down the lane, with so much to explore, both past and present.
