Such a cozy place. They had everything we needed. I could have spent all day on the blue couch with the cozy soft fleece blankets reading. In the middle of artic temps it was a great hide away. Also a great spot to ski at Crystal Mtn. Very happy with our stay!
We were very pleased with our stay and the amenities provided by our host. My kids and I loved the trail and the view it led to! We will definitely stay again.
Cottage was exactly as anticipated and communication with host in response to a question was answered quickly. We all enjoyed this comfortable cottage, and use of the fire pit one evening.Easy drive to Iron Fish Distillery and so many great hiking trails.
Worked out great! Bug repellent a must! The ac was just in a bedroom so it was a little warm and the tv in the bedroom didn’t work. For the time we were there it worked great!
This place was very comfortable and cozy. We stayed here during a blizzard and it felt like we were in our own world. Copemish is small and charming, very quiet, with proximity to some nice restaurants and Crystal Mountain. I would describe this vrbo as picture perfect.
This was a very welcoming stay for us and our two dogs . . . We stayed two nights in March. Everything was well appointed, clean and cute. Easy to check in. Check out was a little more detailed but it helps save on cleaning fees. Hosts were very helpful, communicative, and left a lot of helpful info. The walking trails are well groomed and marked. Beautiful and pleasant to explore. Here's some additional helpful info: - Water is drinkable and tastes nice. - This is an older cottage and the subfloor shows its age. There is a notable slope and some uneven spots. For people with mobility or vision issues, it may be uncomfortable.- The sauna is a short walk from the main house and you do have to step down a-ways and there is no railing. Again, if you have mobility or vision issues, this could be uncomfortable. - The sauna has a draft. It's not a problem in the summer, but in winter it does put a literal damper on the experience. You have to sit completely on the upper bench. - The fireplace was a bit tricky to light and seems to have a little damage, though we did manage to light it with help from the owners and bit of persistence.- Many of the pillows and comforters seem to be down. It gives a great, luxurious feel; However, it can be a serious allergy trigger if you're prone. All that said, we would absolutely stay again. Hoping to see this place and all the wonderful plantings the hosts have done come summer.
Clean, enjoyable place to stay. Everything was in good condition and pleasant. Our dogs loved walking the trails.

About the host
Hosted by Dusty Myers
Don and Shirley previously owned the Copemish Hardware Store and raised their family, including son and co-owner Dusty, in the home on the adjacent property, Hilltop House. Dusty's wife Mary has more recently joined the family business. We take great pride of ownership in maintaining this cottage and sharing this beautiful area with our guests.
Why they chose this property
The Myers family has owned the nearby property atop "Pickle Hill," named for a pickle processing facility once located at the base of its western slope, since the mid 70s. In the 80s, we purchased the meadow across the road and what became our family home, Hilltop House. It only made sense for us to buy George's Hilltop Retreat, when our neighbors George and Zelda Zendra decided to sell in 2005.
Up to that point, the property had been in George's family for quite some time. His extended family used to gather here to play cards, gather around the bonfire, and enjoy one another’s company – much like we do today! It is our understanding that Zelda grew up in the farmhouse across the meadow, now called Hilltop House, and that her parents, the Gibbs, lived in the farmhouse in the 1940s and 50s, until the time they died. It was in the late 60s that George and Zelda inherited the home. They lived in Muskegon and enjoyed the property as their “up north” retreat, a base for activities like skiing, hiking, canoeing, and fishing.
George, Zelda, and her parents moved two 1930s buildings from a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) logging camp located in Brethren, about twenty minutes south in the Manistee National Forest. One was the storage shed now connected to the sauna building. The other was moved to the farmhouse across the meadow where Zelda’s parents lived, and it housed a sauna for a time. A few other such buildings, from the CCC camp, can be spotted around the local area. In the late 1980s, George and Zelda built a sauna in the outbuilding and added the bedroom, the bay window area, and a deck to the back of the house. It was around that time Don and Shirley purchased Zelda’s family home across the meadow, where Dusty and his sister grew up.
What makes this property unique
At George’s Hilltop Retreat, we hope you’ll enjoy grilling and sharing meals, gathering round the bonfire, playing games with family and friends, relaxing in the sauna, and more. You are welcome to walk in the meadow across the road. Following the paths up Pickle Hill leads to splendid views of Crystal Mountain to the west. Dogs and kids of all ages will love running, walking, snowshoeing, and playing on the surrounding 10 acres.
George’s Hilltop Retreat is one of three properties available from the Myers family. The other two include Hilltop House across the meadow and a one-bedroom loft apartment (Hilltop Loft) above the garage on the far side of the farmhouse. When bundled together, the three homes offer a great option for extended family get-togethers.
Inside the home, we love the roomy and recently updated kitchen with the charm of old-timey Hoosier hutch and sturdy kitchen table. The firm Tempur-Pedic mattress in the bedroom and the rustic sauna offer rest and relaxation after a long day of skiing or romping in the woods. The freestanding gas stove in the living room makes for cozy lounging in the winter.
