About this property

Hand-hewn Log Cabin on 7 acres, only 2 mi to heart of Hill City

The cabin no longer has a hot tub as seen in some of the pictures and the virtual tour.

Marshall Gulch Getaway is an authentic hand-hewn log cabin overlooking a serene valley on 7 acres just 2 miles outside of Hill City. A mountain creek flows within view below the cabin. Deer and turkeys are frequent visitors in the yard! The cabin is tastefully decorated with décor fitting the mountain atmosphere. This cozy cabin has a king size log bed in the loft, and a double bed on the main floor bedroom. We allow a max of 4 adults in this rental. If a third sleeping area is needed for a child, you may bring an air mattress and necessary linens. The kitchen is spacious for a family of 4-5.

There is one bathroom with a tub/shower combo and laundry accommodations with washer and dryer. The loft bedroom has a window AC. Board games and playing cards available for rainy or snowy days. There is a 47-inch flat screen satellite TV in the living room, along with a real wood burning fireplace! (And electric heat throughout). We supply a starter supply of firewood, and you can purchase extra at a local grocery store.

The covered front porch is a favorite of guests to sit and watch the wildlife and let the day slip away. Around back is patio with a Gas Log fire-pit that has plenty of outdoor seating to have your morning coffee, outdoor meals, or just sit and watch wildlife. A propane grill is also provided. This cabin sits on a beautiful hillside overlooking the valley below with views of Black Elk Peak. But, the drive to this cabin is a piece of cake and parking is plentiful. Large grassy lawn with plenty of space to roam. This rental is a time-honored favorite for repeat guests.

NO PETS/NO SMOKING. NO TENTS or additional people camping outdoors! No exceptions!

Centrally located in the Black Hills, about 15-20 minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Sheridan, Pactola and Deerfield lakes and the majority of all attractions!

This property was absolutely a perfect place to celebrate our anniversary in SD. The location was ideal to visit Mt. Rushmore, Black Hills and the Badlands. The cabin had all the amenities we needed to make us comfortable. And the views of the deers and wild turkeys every day was a special treat.

The cabin is in a picturesque location on the outskirts of Hill City, a quaint Black Hills town with plenty to see and do. Great restaurants nearby, and easy access to all main routes to see the major sites. The cabin is well outfitted, comfortably fits 3-4 people, with all you need to be cozy and comfortable. Plenty of wildlife around to see and enjoy.

This was the perfect place to stay while visiting the Black Hills. The cabin was very clean and very well stocked. David, the owner, was easy to communicate with and responded promptly. It is located far enough from town to be quiet and feel like you are away from things but close enough to be convenient. We would definitely stay here again.

We loved our stay here! The location was perfect in the central hills. Every detail was so well thought out. We especially loved the porch - we spent a lot of time out there sipping coffee, enjoying rainstorms, and watching the wildlife. The size of the cabin was perfect for our family of five. We appreciated the large bathroom with two (!) sinks. My kids loved the game selection and the cute kitty that visited our porch daily.

Excellent Black Hills Location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The cabin was excellent and the property had a great view. Saw deer and turkeys every day and the donkey next door was entertaining. The Black Hills area is wonderful, and Custer State Park is a must see!

A cozy cabin with modern amenities! Perfect location for enjoying Hill City and the southern Black Hills. Plenty of space to park and easy access to the main roads. Lots of wildlife to view too! We really enjoyed our stay.

Great family trip!

The cabin was very clean! Everything was labeled which was so helpful. We were able to find everything we needed without searching. It was a great size for our family of 4. We took in all the activities but the favorite part of the trip for our 6 year olds were UNO on the front porch and the neighbor's burro.

This property is PERFECT for small groups/families, and the pictures/descriptions don’t do it justice! Excellent location, plenty of room to play in the yard for our young kids, private, and extremely well kept. Cabin is very well stocked with cooking and cleaning essentials, and the large washer/dryer were an awesome plus. Would definitely stay here again!

Very Relaxing

Very much enjoyed the cabin. The bedrooms were a little tight for my 6’4” frame. But the view, porch, back yard, kitchen & living area, close to Hill City made it all worth it. Need to update listing as no hot tub any longer. Enjoyed the wildlife passing through.

Relaxation in the Black Hills

This was our second stay at this cabin, which explains the 5 stars. We are repeat customers. The cabin is centrally located to many activities but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet. Highly recommend.

Great cabin in Perfect location

We stayed at the cabin recently for a South Dakota family vacation and this cabin was great. Perfect location to everything and had everything we needed. Very clean and communication was super simple. Cute mountainside cabin and we would stay again! The only downside was the kids were thoroughly disappointed about the hot tub not being on the property as the listing states. I would suggest the owners remove this from the listing as it's deceiving.

Peaceful Getaway

Great location just outside of Hill City. Very convenient. Directions and information about the cabin was accurate as well. Cabin was very clean and in a peaceful location. There was plenty of room for the kids to play outside and multiple days we saw deer in the yard.

We absolutely loved this little cabin!!! Perfect for myself, husband and our adult daughter. It is perfectly located to be convenient to everything in the area. It is in very peaceful and quiet location too. It was exactly as described and very clean and well cared for. This will go on my list of properties to return to when we travel back to this area!!! We were only there for 3 nights and wish we had planned for a few days more! We will next time!

Cute log cabin near Hill City

Dates of visit: May 29-June 1, 2024.This cute log cabin is located in a quiet country area with only a few nearby houses and it's close to town. We used the king size bed in the loft and found the mattress comfortable and the sheets soft and smooth. I'm 5 feet tall, yet twice I hit my head hard on the low rafters that you have to pass by to get into bed. My husband who is 5'11" was able to avoid that problem, so maybe it's just me. The water was discolored, the hosts said, due to some mineral content in the spring, but the tap water was safe for drinking and bathing. As a courtesy, they provide a water cooler with pure water for guests. The living room furniture looked nice, but we found the sofa a bit uncomfortable; we kept sliding down. The living and dining chairs were good. I was trying to access their wifi using the information I was sent, but I couldn't get it to work. So, I called the hosts and they said that the information I was sent had come from vrbo, not from them, and that it was wrong and that they would contact vrbo and have it corrected. They had posted the correct information in the house, which, of course, I should have seen, but did not. The posted info worked great. The hosts were kind and gracious people. We would stay there again.

We are a hard working couple who love having time to relax and get away in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Disappearing in the forest for hours on end has become a hobby. Hill City won our hearts when we were looking for a property of our own and we have adopted it as our second hometown. We have had this property since 2012 and have enjoyed sharing its magic with all our guests. It feels miles away from the hustle and bustle and is the perfect place for doing absolutely nothing. But, it is only 2 miles from downtown Hill City and only minutes from all the major Black Hills attractions. We are thrilled to welcome you as our guests!
