About this property
Comfort & quiet on an island off the Maine Coast.
The Red House was a farmhouse for a working farm from the late 1800s until the mid-1900s. Miss Grace, the daughter of the founder of WR Grace- a specialty building supply company- bought the 100-acre point of land where the Red House now is. Miss Grace built a large summer house on the point and a red farmhouse at the beginning of the peninsula to supply her and those who worked for her with their food and flowers.
The Red House barn used to house the beef and milk cows, the sheep, and the hay and corn silage for the animals. The chicken coop was (and still is) behind the farmhouse. The vegetable garden was (and still is) in front of the farmhouse. The farm supplied Miss Grace, her house and garden “help” and the crew of her 100-foot yacht with fresh milk, butter, eggs, and vegetables daily and freshly-butchered chickens 2 or 3 times a week.
The Red House Barn was made into the beautiful apartment that it is now in 1984. It looks out over the field that used to pasture the animals to Seal Cove where Big Tree Beach and Boating offers any age sailing and navigation instruction and a wonderful beach for swimming.
Behind the Red House, there is a short walking trail to the shore which faces west- an ideal spot for picnics and sunset-watching.
This is an idyllic serene spot, a bird-watcher, and nature-lovers paradise. There are also opportunities to sail, hike, play tennis or pickleball, eat ice cream, and explore the island culture and beauties.
Sorry, no pets.

This place was everything we were looking for: it's a warm, comfortable farmhouse in an extraordinary, peaceful setting; there are wonderful hiking trails nearby; and the hosts are generous and helpful in every possible way.

Great guests! We were glad they enjoyed the apartment, gardens, trails, beach behind the house. They left the apartment clean and tidy. We appreciated meeting these two Californians!
My stay with friends was amazing and more.
The house and the environment around it provided the solitude, tranquility and at the same time adventure we were looking for. Laine and Jon were absolutely amazing as hosts and they didn't hesitate to help us out and answer questions. Overall we look forward to staying here again.

Lovely couple, perfect renters. We really enjoyed meeting them, and appreciated their love of this wonderful island!
The most relaxing peaceful getaway! You will not want to leave the island. Laine and Jon are wonderful hosts. Thank you for sharing some veggies from your garden, helping us get set up for our lobster night, and chatting with us about the island history. Favorite part was the private cove area on the property!
Our stay on the island of Islesboro, was wonderful - from our gracious hosts welcoming us and showing us around the property, even sharing some blueberries that they had freshly picked, to the beauty of the property itself. The flower gardens, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, massive white birch and fir trees, and the private coastline of the property made it very special. The Red Barn had a comfortable bed, large living area and kitchen with all the amenities and at night (in July) you could sleep comfortably with the cool breeze coming in the open windows. If you want to venture off the island for awhile, you can catch the ferry to the mainland. Just be mindful that the last ferry leaves for Islesboro at 5:00 pm and you might want to be in line for the 4:00 pm ferry just to make sure that if you miss making the 4:00 ferry, that you will be on the 5:00 one.
Excellent spot for our young family of four. We hit up the beaches, playgrounds, and local stores (often). We really lucked out with the weather and enjoyed the water access from the property both at low and high tide (tide dependent but not a concern of the kids). Our hosts were great and the kids enjoyed picking some fresh vegetables from the garden...and blueberries from one of the preserves (perfect for pancakes). Thanks! Aaron & Mary
Spacious living/dining quarters in a beautiful setting. Ideally located mid-island and perfect for easy access to hiking trails, grocery shop, Historical Society, library and much more.
Laine and Jon’s property is just amazing. The house is so pretty and the grounds are absolutely breathtaking. We all enjoyed the quiet beauty of this special place.
We had the most relaxing and restorative stay with Laine and Jon-- a group of three moms of young children who stole away for a much-needed ladies weekend. It was so perfect and relaxing! The gardens are gorgeous, and the trail down to the water was so lovely. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked and we made several memorable meals! Waking up to the birds every morning was delightful. Islesboro is a quiet and tranquil place to restore and reconnect with the beauty of nature and each other. Our hosts were super kind and welcoming. Highly recommend!
Peaceful and comfortable spot for a getaway. Living space has everything you need and surrounding area is beautiful. We stayed with a 4 and 7 year old and had an enjoyable time. Easy walk to rocky beach (not good for swimming but great for exploring, skipping rocks, and finding little crabs). Recommend driving up to the Northern end of the island and doing the walk around Turtle Head Preserve. The ferry ride itself is easy but recommend paying the extra money for a reservation as on our way out we had to wait through two ferries before we made it on.

A wonderful family.- they seemed to love the natural setting- I'm glad they saw all the deer in the field- even the white one! We would love to have them return. They left the apartment spotless.
Laine and Jon have a wonderful place -- an joyous experience, really -- for island visitors. We're Islesboro summer regulars, but this was our first time at The Red Barn. Absolutely quiet with a cool breeze, and beautiful fields and woods surrounding the house. Perfect location mid-island, so just minutes away from all island points. All around great experience!

A perfect gem of a place
We so enjoyed our stay in Islesboro at this wonderful home. It is a very private, beautiful location where your blood pressure will decrease immediately as you look out over the pasture filled with wildflowers to the sea beyond. The house itself is utterly charming and comfortable-clean as a whistle. It is well appointed with everything you need, and the decor is lovely. The hosts, Laine and Jon are warm, friendly and accessible and made us feel very welcome. Our only complaint is that we didn't book for a longer period of time. We can't wait to return for a longer stay next year. I highly recommend this spot- it is perfect in every way.
Laine is a bird and nature-lover and the former owner of an organic food company- Fiddlers Green Farm- Jon is a bird and nature-lover who taught advanced environmental science at the Islesboro Central School and plays the guitar and banjo. Both love Islesboro, and their home at the Red House. They spend loving energy working on their gardens and the woodland around it.
Why they chose this property
We have loved and been connected to Islesboro through friends and family for our whole life.
What makes this property unique
Enjoy the quiet, the Penobscot Bay (one of the Maine coast's most magical spots), the birds, exploring the many hiking trails on the island, experiencing the sailing opportunities, being part of the island culture.
