Wappinger Cottage - Scandinavian retreat on a creek
Wappinger Cottage is a Scandinavian-inspired home featuring landscaped gardens leading to the shimmering Wappinger Creek. Inside, contemporary furnishings accented by bold patterns and pops of color create a sophisticated and inviting space. Pets allowed.
We are located at the end of a short private road and not visible from the rest of the quaint, established neighborhood. On approach you will be discover a mysterious black barn-like structure. Follow the path to the wrap-around deck to be greeted with walls of glass and a beautiful view of the trees and creek.
Flowing from the deck is a spacious open-plan living and dining space with a modern and efficient kitchen; two queen bedrooms with built-in closets- one with ensuite bathroom; a bunk room sleeping a further two guests; another bathroom with a tub; and a laundry room. The whole house has underfloor heating, which heats the polished concrete floors and radiates a cozy heat. In warm weather, large screened casement windows and sliding doors naturally ventilate the interior. High speed Wi-Fi, Apple TV, Nest thermostat and August key-free access bring modern technology to the countryside.
Despite the vernacular appearance of the house from the outside, the crisp white interior houses a collection of C20th classics: The John Pawson inspired oak dining table is paired with Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chairs; an Eero Saarinen Womb Chair sits beside an LCW Chair in American walnut by Charles and Ray Eames; and Achille Castiglioni’s Arco Lamp overhangs a Nelson Platform Bench. Elsewhere you’ll find designs by Danish companies Menu and HAY and German designer Konstantin Grcic; Swedish and American rugs; and the owner’s collection of books, magazines and art.
We are on 1.5 acres garden of lawns, native grasses and wild flowers. The sprawling setting affords you privacy from neighbors and the cacophony of birds and the sound of the flowing creek will block out almost all manmade noises. In summer, the house is surrounded by a dense grove of trees. In winter, the view is of fields and distant hills. NYC feels like a world away!
As this is our weekend house, you'll have the entire property to yourself.
We keep an up-to-date Compendium in Wappinger Cottage which has all the information about the house and local area, including restaurants, supermarkets, activities, hospitals, pharmacies, vineyards, historic Houses and other local tourist attractions and towns to visit.
We are always available by phone or email if any issues arise.
The home is nestled in a serene neighborhood that invites peaceful walks through the forests and along the river. Poughkeepsie is nearby meaning tasty local restaurants and charming shops are always just a short drive away.
Uber and Lyft both operate in Poughkeepsie however pick up times will be much longer, so allow for that. There are also local taxi companies. We list our favorites in the compendium.
The Wappinger Creek is fed from the Thompson pond below Stissing Mountain almost 30 miles up stream and flows to the Hudson River. We love swimming in the river during summer and encourage you to do so too, but keep in mind that this is a natural waterway with no lifeguards. Entering is at your own risk.
Ample off-street parking is available for guests.

2nd time here and plan to book anytime we need that extra family space that allows you the comfort, privacy and beautiful space Great hosts, great communication, and great space
This place was terrific--maybe even more beautiful than the pictures convey. The house is secluded; all you see from it is the creek (on which ducks were fishing during our 4-day winter stay). We saw other kinds of birds (cardinals, woodpeckers) in the trees nearby. The house was also extremely well-appointed (kitchen, bathrooms, washer and dryer). Smart layout with bedrooms on opposite ends of the house--creating a bit of privacy. The extended living/dining area has a small but fun games and book collection, though we were mostly out and about during our stay, visiting the FDR library, strolling the campus of Vassar College, and getting to know charming nearby towns like Millbrook and Beacon.
An ideal retreat. The modern cabin offered serene surroundings with stunning views of the woods and creek. The property was well-maintained, and the property manager was highly responsive. A perfect choice for a peaceful and refreshing getaway.
We booked this stay for our friends wedding and it worked out perfectly for us, our two toddler girls and my parents! The house is the perfect size and the property is beautiful! We would love to stay here again!
Wappinger Cottage was spotlessly clean, quiet, well appointed and perfectly maintained. The house conveys sophistication and understated elegance; it's well situated for trips up and down the Hudson River Valley; the hosts were cordial and informative; and every step of the process was well thought-out and smooth. We highly recommend this delightful cottage!
Beautiful house. Really enjoyed the views even. Can only imagine what it round be like in the summer. The host always answered if I had questions and was informative with process. It was a great stay. Thank you!!!
Through the neighborhood at the end of the quiet road tucked behind other houses is this lovely, tidy, efficiently laid out, well equipped home. The placement on the lot is perfect making it easy to forget you're only a few minutes from in-town Poughkepsie. This was also one of the cleanest rentals we've ever stayed in. Wish we'd found it when our son started college in Poughkeepsie rather than for graduation!
What a beautiful spot. The house is ideally located, in a little neighborhood, but perfectly angled to face the stream and the trees. Extremely comfortable (great beds!) and ready for relaxing inside and outside. This was perhaps the best VRBO spot we've rented in many years. Congrats.
Stayed here for two nights when we dropped our kid off at college. Lovely, clean and comfortable. Lots of greenery, and the flowing river relaxed us all as we re-packed and prepared for move-in day! Host was very prompt and helpful. Highly recommend.
I was impressed before I arrived as the property owner texted to check on my drive as it was pouring rain! The cottage was just lovely, tucked down at the bend of the river-surely the best location in the neighborhood.
The cottage was modern and spotless! The beds were super comfortable and the linens were very nice. We will definitely book again!
I stayed here with my whole family and we loved it. It’s right on a large creek and very secluded. Within minutes of shopping. It’s a great spot just north of NYC and I wished we reserved more days. My son left a book of cards and the owner contacted us and mailed it back. Thanks, again!
What a wonderful find! My family stayed at this adorable cottage for my daughter's college graduation, and we couldn't be more pleased. From the communication with the host, to the lovely and fresh interiors, the amazing property and creek that surrounds, to the beautiful sounds of the birds in the morning... it was just perfect. Thank you!
The property was amazing. The location is great, it’s tucked away with great access to the river. The home is stunning, with heated floors! And all amenities you would need. Lots of space inside and seating. We had 5 people and one dog staying with us and there was ample space! The only improvement would be the front door, it does not latch well! You really need to check it’s closed! But will always recommend this space!
Very honestly this location was above anything we expected. Waking up in the morning to the sun glistening off of the river was so magical, with the fall foliage peeking through! We absolutely loved it. We didn't really have any communication with the owners other than arrival codes, and couldn't find instructions for departure, but it wasn't necessary. Things went flawlessly. The house was modern and lovely, and we are already talking about our return!
A lovely cottage by the creek. Simply beautiful! Very peaceful and quiet, but close to a lot of fun activities! Will definitely plan to stay here again
