About this property
Peaceful Nostalgic Mountain Home Memories in the beautiful Vallecito Valley!
Mountain Serenity - Near Vallecito Lake - Home Comforts with Nostalgic Decor in the Mountains! This home is ready for you to make life-long memories in the Vallecito Valley surrounded by breathtaking mountains. The property is located just north of Vallecito Lake in the heart of the mountains near Vallecito Creek and the village of Vallecito, Colorado. 13,000+ foot peaks are visible to the north and mountains are everywhere you look.
The calendar is kept up-to-date, so choose your time to come enjoy our peaceful mountain retreat. There is plenty of room in the home with 3,000 square feet. Sit in front of the roaring fireplace or by the warm wood-burning stove while planning your choice of fun activities. Vallecito Lake is one of Colorado's largest and most beautiful lakes. Vallecito (pronounced 'vy-ya-see-toe') is only 23 miles northeast of Durango. The beautiful recreational area offers year-round enjoyment for the entire family.
The home is well furnished with delightfully rustic, nostalgic mountain decor and charming antiques. The kitchen is modern and well equipped and there is a large dining table for great family meals. Games and puzzles are provided, as well as informational brochures about local points of interest and activities. There are 4 bedrooms with beds for 10 (1 king, 2 queens and 2 fulls) and 2 bathrooms. If you just can’t leave the modern world behind, high-speed wireless internet and a Smart TV are provided free of charge. Cell phone coverage is strong.
PLEASE NOTE: There are several areas with steps inside the house. The den is 2 steps below the family room, the dining area is 1 step below the kitchen, there are stairs from the downstairs to the upstairs landing, and the two master bedrooms are 2 steps above the landing. There are also 2 steps to enter the 2 front doors. The steps add interesting character to the interior of the home. However, some elderly or mobility impaired people find these steps challenging, and this should be taken into consideration before reserving the property. Additionally, please note that all bedrooms are located upstairs.
Vallecito means “little valley”, and, as the name suggests, the village of Vallecito is nestled between two mountain ridges on the shores of Vallecito Lake. Vallecito has several eateries and small stores. The Pine (Piños) and Vallecito Rivers flow from the Weminuche Wilderness into Vallecito Lake.
The mountain and lake scenery are stunning. Grimes Creek and the Vallecito River are ¼ mile away from the house, and Vallecito Lake is a 1/2 mile to the south. Great fishing can be found at the lake, Pine (Pinos) River & Vallecito River, as well as many local streams. The lake is open to recreation of all types. Boat inspection is required before launching. You can even rent a pontoon boat & fishing gear at the local marina. Fishing is excellent with many game fish including Trout, Salmon, and Northern Pike.
If four-wheeling is your thing, there are miles & miles of off road trails to explore. You will find even more miles of hiking trails following our two rivers into the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness with over 2.5 million acres of public lands with many 13,000+ and 14,000+ peaks that you can explore.
Ride the '1880's' Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or visit Mesa Verde Anasazi Ruins, visit Silverton’s Mining Town, or soak in the healing hot water in Pagosa Springs or Durango, shop or see a movie in historic Durango. Enjoy a day in the quaint town of Ouray, America’s Little Switzerland, or spend a relaxing summer evening at the Bar-D Chuckwagon supper and show. There are excellent golf courses, numerous museums and of course... the scenic million dollar highway.
There are just as many winter activities such as Snowmobiling, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing Downhill/Alpine/Nordic Skiing or a Dinner Sleigh Ride at Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) and nearby ski areas. The house is not “ski-in/ski-out”. The house is about 1 hour from Durango Mountain Resort and 1 ½ hours from Wolf Creek Ski Resort.
We think our mountain home is a peaceful refuge from our busy world. We’re sure you’ll agree!

About the host
Hosted by Kent & Anita
We honeymooned in the Durango area 30 years ago and have been in love with the area every since. Our three kids love the mountains year round, too. We enjoy the winters with skiing and snowboarding by day and puzzles, hot chocolate and roaring fires by night! The summers are spent hiking, biking and enjoying the beauty of the mountains as much as possible!
Why they chose this property
When we started looking for vacation homes in the area, this is the first house we looked at and it was love at first sight! The house has unique charm and character. In addition, the setting is so picturesque! Waking up to the beautiful mountains is an awesome way to start the day. We love that the hiking trails, rivers and lake are so close.
What makes this property unique
Staying here is peaceful and relaxing. The property does not feel like a rental - it feels like home. It is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of today's busy world! Plus, with 3,000 sqft, there is plenty of room to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
