This waterfront romantic nautical cottage will not disappoint. Nestled along the peaceful shoreline of the Elk River, Sunset River Cottage offers a front-row seat to some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the Chesapeake Bay area. With year-round water views, cozy charm, and a welcoming atmosphere, this is the perfect escape for couples looking for romance, friends gathering for a weekend getaway, or anyone craving a slower pace surrounded by nature.
From the moment you step inside, you will be greeted by the warmth and character only a true cottage can offer. This isn’t the Ritz-Carlton, it is a quirky, beautiful waterfront retreat where charm matters more than chandeliers and comfort is found in the little details. It is meant for guests who appreciate simple pleasures, stunning views, and a relaxed atmosphere, not for fancy, pretentious travelers seeking luxury resort amenities. Nautical touches, airy colors, and large windows bring the water indoors, while soft lighting creates a calm and relaxed vibe. The open living space is perfect for curling up with a good book, sharing a bottle of wine, or simply watching the river sparkle in the afternoon sun.
The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals at your own pace, whether it is a romantic dinner for two or a casual brunch with friends. The dining table is perfectly positioned to capture panoramic river views, making every meal feel extra special.
The bedroom is a peaceful retreat with soothing tones and a cozy cottage feel that invites restful sleep. The bathroom is antique and quirky, featuring a charming soaking tub with a shower and a one-of-a-kind custom shell sink that adds character to the space. During the summer season, guests can also enjoy a refreshing outdoor shower surrounded by nature, perfect after a swim in the river.
Step outside and you will discover the heart of Sunset River Cottage, the private backyard patio overlooking the water. It is the perfect spot to sip wine as the sky explodes in shades of orange, pink, and purple. The fire pit invites laughter and storytelling under the stars, while the direct waterfront access means you can swim, kayak, paddleboard, fish, or simply dip your toes in the Elk River whenever the mood strikes. Swimming is a lot of fun here, and guests are welcome to bring their own kayak, paddleboard, and fishing gear to make the most of the river.
Located just minutes from Chesapeake City, you will be close to waterfront dining, boutique shops, and seasonal festivals. Explore the charming streets, take a boat tour, or indulge in fresh seafood before returning to your peaceful riverside hideaway.
Whether you are here for romance, friendship, or simply to slow down, Sunset River Cottage delivers a memorable waterfront escape. It is a little quirky, a lot beautiful, and entirely unforgettable, where every sunset feels like it was painted just for you. Book your stay and let the Elk River work its magic.

Stayed here for daughter’s graduation at UD. House was clean and back yard with views and access to water was amazing. Also loved being able to bring our dog with us. Thanks so much for a great stay!
This was a perfect getaway and the cottage is exactly as described. Host was able to offer pet friendly accommodations and my dogs loved the water access. A peaceful retreat in a charming character rich cottage.
We had an amazing time at the cottage. It was clean, neat, well decorated, and a super comfortable place to stay. We used the hot tub, watched the sunset, took in the breathtaking views of the river. We will definitely return!
Such a cute spot, perfect for a couple… quick drive to places to eat along the eastern shore… really peaceful, well kept… host was accommodating based on our travel plans which was very much appreciated ! Definitely want to try to come back!!
Beautiful location on the Elk river with beautiful sunsets.Lovely interior and decor.Minor maintenance needed, (i.e.broken back storm door, tub stopper, lawn/landscape).
This place was so perfect and exactly what we were looking for. Everything was exactly as described, loved the set up, and the hot tub was so easy to use. Communication was prompt for the few questions I had and checkout was wildly easy! We will def be coming back!
We loved our stay! The cottage was even better than in the photos. Jess made the check in process extremely easy and had great communication. It was exactly what we were looking for. A romantic quiet getaway with our puppy. They definitely put in the time and work to make it a great experience. The sunsets were beautiful on the river. Really enjoyed Chesapeake city which was a very close drive. 5 star experience, thank you!

Disliked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities, communication
A filthy hole of a property-in a trailer park setting. Outside filthy and unusable and unsafe. Debris rusty garbage cans an unsanitary “hot tub;” mold everywhere; outdoor eating areas covered in mold and on and on
My husband and I chose this property due to proximity from our home and waterfront location. We rolled in during severe thunderstorms but still enjoyed beautiful sunset as clouds broke for a brief time. We cooked in that night due to storm and had everything we needed for cooking.
We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere as well as exploring local Chesapeake City. Started our anniversary with mass at St. Rose of Lima church, coffee and breakfast at Cafe on the Bay, and fabulous dinner at Bayard House. Jess was quick to respond to couple of questions we had. We enjoyed the hot tub, reading outside on sitting area as well an anniversary dance to our first song on the patio 31 years later! Hope to return again!
This property is gorgeous! It was everything I could have hoped for. I was in town for a wedding in Earleville in search of a dog friendly rental. I am so happy I found this place. The cottage is down the long driveway neighboring other cottages/houses. Very cute fenced in entryway. The check-in process was very easy with the door code for entry. The cottage was super cute, plenty of space. The pups and I spent most of our time outside enjoying the view. The yard overlooking the water has a fenced in area which was nice for the pups so I could sit and relax with some peace of mind. I spent some time in the hot tub after the wedding. Overall such a relaxing getaway. I've had several friends reach out for the rental info after seeing pictures I'd posted. The owner was able to recommend some local grocery spots as well. Very responsive. Definitely would recommend.
A refreshing expance of light from the many windows greeted us inside the double door. Through clean windows graced with breezy white panels the view of the Elk River filled the Dining area. To the right corner were twin beds filled with pillows to lounge or sleep. There was nothing lacking for fine TV/Cable Entertainment. The kitchen is brand new and well stocked. . . countertops are to "die for" The floors are high quality laminate throughout with an open floor plan design. The Queen Bed is exceptionally comfortable. . . a bit high for short folks like myself.
The sweet bathroom is well appointed but compact. The weather only allowed us one evening to make a small fire in the Fire Pit. We sat on comfortable patio chairs where we reminisced about our 60 years of marriage n watched the River flow by and birds call to each other. The large trees overhead make keeping a spotless patio and flower beds difficult. Again we didn't have much chance to spend out there because of the weather.
I was sad when I knew it was the last night in this beautiful place. Hopefully it will be the beginning of many more.
