The Week That Went Too Fast!

A lovely week - it just went too darned fast! Kay provides a comfortable, generously stocked home. The beds were some of the best we've encountered. The house is convenient to the mountains, waterfalls and swimming holes, as well as grocery stores and ice cream spots (a MUST for any Maine vacation!).

Perfect In The Woods

I couldn't be happier with this rental - Kay was just awesome to work with and the place was beyond our expectations. Unfortunately, we were there for an event in Jay and didn't get to spend _too_ much time at the cabin, but the time we did spend there was great. I would come back here with my buddies or my family anytime!

Perfection

The camp was exactly as described, modern amenities but with the feel of an old Maine camp. The pond was crystal clear and we saw loons, turtles and even the elusive resident bullfrog. Owner is very responsive and everything went smoothly. It was quiet and private, which is exactly what we were looking for. Hope to go back next year!

Kiwi Lodge

If you want a serene, quiet getaway, you will enjoy staying on Sand Pond as did we. A highlight is to paddle out on the pond and observe the loon family. A fun outdoor place to eat is the Farmhouse Beer Garden about 15 minutes away. Lobsters from Moshers were good but they don’t package them properly. They put them in a paper bag so be sure they put the bag in a plastic one or the bottom will break through. Powder House Hills Trails in Farmington is a nice pretty place to hike and fairly easy. Get away from the hustle and bustle of a lot of our daily lives and stay at Kiwi Lodge.

Lakeside Love

Just returned from our first stay at Kiwi Lodge. For reference, we're a family of five, three children & two parents, and the youngest kiddo is 12. Kiwi Lodge is beautiful. Was spotless upon arrival, and well equipped. We had a few very hot days during our stay so being on the lake was especially appreciated. The kayaks, paddle boat, and canoe were so much fun. We were in them daily. One of the nights that we went out on the dock to look at the stars, (magnificent each night), we heard loons. Played badminton and enjoyed the hot tub. Took an afternoon to go on a hike, Round Top Trail, in the Kennebec Highlands. Picked up lobster rolls twice from Arkay's Pizza in Farmington. Ate at Gifford's Ice Cream twice as well! Very nice staff at both of these places. If you venture into Portland, the lobster rolls from the Bite into Maine Lobster Roll food truck that is at Fort Williams Park on Cape Elizabeth are so worth the drive. Our family had endured an extremely stressful month prior to our trip. To say that we ALL needed a break is frankly, an understatement and Kiwi Lodge delivered. My husband said that he had never had such a relaxing vacation. We've stayed at a fair amount of rentals by owner so I feel qualified in saying that Kay is one of the best out there. She was always available for a quick question either before or during our stay. She exudes a genuine hospitality that you can feel despite being miles apart. Kay is a gem. This review isn't as eloquent as I would like but it is sincere. I recommend Kiwi Lodge without reservation, pun intended. :) We live multiple states away but do hope to return one day to this charming home.

Our best family vacation ever!!

My family and I arrived in what we very soon dubbed 'our Paradise' in Maine shell shocked by a harsh winter and recent sadness. We departed revived and with renewed joy! The house is situated in a secluded location and we were instantly struck by the tranquility. We were irresistibly drawn into the wonder and beauty of nature. We all loved the gorgeous log home. It is a home not a cabin because it is really big. It is spacious, spotless and extremely well maintained. Our family, including four kids and a dog each claimed a private, favorite spot! Most of the time they played and explored outside though. At home we can't get them out of their rooms! We loved the beds. They are so comfortable! The bed rooms are gorgeously decorated in what I perceive a modern rustic Mainer style. Luxurious! As promised by our gracious hosts grocery stores were very close by. But apart from a trip to buy the impeccaby fresh seafood (delicious and cheap!) from a local truck we preferred to stay in 'our Paradise'! Highlights were the house, the haunting song of the loons ...especially beautiful at night, watching the moon play on the lake, stars like we had never seen before, the paths meandering through the forest...inviting us to stroll along them, snuggling up with the kids on unbelievably comfortable couches watching movies from the collection provided, (who gets time for that at home??) the Xbox, the barbeque, the fabulous big farm style kitchen, cooking and eating together with the kids, time and space for plenty of one-on-one heartfelt conversations, having hilarious fun bonding as a family playing board games together on the very large, inviting dining table. Gosh....what wasn't a highlight?? Everything was a highlight! Our family had no idea our vacation was going to be so wonderful! Thank you Kiwi Lodge for giving us 'our Paradise'. THANK YOU! We will definitely return.

beautiful clean log house on lake

Beautiful 3 level log house in private setting with lake access. Kitchen and bathrooms well stocked with all necessary amenities. The only minor drawback was that the house was very dark indoors, especially in cloudy, rainy weather. Also, the main floor windows didn't have any window coverings which might not bother most folks, but we felt a bit 'exposed' at night. The porch with pond views was great for eating outdoors, even in rainy weather. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and the surrounding area.

Paradise with a view

Kay, the host, was so great giving us all the information we needed to enjoy the sites. She made this a Trip of the Lifetime. We went to see the Fall Leaves (and were not disappointed), but the Kiwi Lodge made are trip even more than that. With the Sand Lake Pond right out the back door along with a dock, it was great to fish early in the morning. The firepit down by the water was great in the evening and at night. Watching the sunset with the mirror of the trees off the water was a picture of a lifetime. The Kiwi Lodge was more than enough for the two of us. The Kitchen had everything and more than what we needed. The BBQ Gas grill on the outside deck was so easy to use and we cooked some great meals. The Hot tub on the bottom floor patio was nice for a soothing hot massage after a long day. The top floor had 2 bedrooms and a full bathroom. The middle floor was the 2nd Bathroom (full), the living rooming, reading room, dining room and Kitchen. The bottom floor had a game room and outdoor patio (hot tub, hammock, and chair and table. The area is gorgeous and going for evening walks were wonderful. We can't really describe what beauty is at the Kiwi Lodge, you have to go to see it. Words wouldn't do it justice. There are water canoe, kayaks, and paddle boat for use and in good condition. The greatest thing was the Host, Kay sent us so much information about the area before we ever got there we didn't have to waste time trying to find places to go. The Kiwi Lodge is in Chesterville, ME and about 10 to 15 min drive is Farmington, ME, which has everything you need. Take a drive to Skowhegan it has some awesome waterfalls. 10 Stars to the Host and 10 Stars to the Kiwi Lodge (which is really an Awesome Cabin in the trees and by the water)

Beautiful Cozy Lakefront Home

Enjoyed a wonderful long weekend at Kiwi Lodge! The home was nicely equipped with all that we needed and we loved the peace and quiet of this location. View of the lake was lovely and the porch was a comfortable place to gather. The hot tub was a great place to relax after a morning walk on one of the nearby trails suggested by Kay. We absolutely loved our dinner at 122 Corson (also Kay’s recommendation) where farm to table food was served in a beautiful post and beam setting. Call for a reservation, it was well worth the price. Thanks Kay for sharing your lovely home with us!

My husband and I had a great time at kiwi lodge! The fish were jumping and the eagles were flying. The home was very clean, very comfortable and quite relaxing, everything to ensure a wonderful vacation! Kayaking was wonderful, it was also nice to take a short drive into town if we wanted and know that when we were tired we had a spot that felt like home away from home! The owner was a pleasure to deal with, very responsive! I would look to stay here again if we decide on visiting this lovely area of Maine in the future! Kiwi lodge was a wonderful respite!

Lovely fall getaway

My husband and I had a wonderful time celebrating a milestone in our marriage at Kiwi Lodge. The cabin is beautifully laid out, clean and on a lovely lake. Though it was just two of us, it would have easily accomodated many more. The long dining table off the really well stocked kitchen would have been a great place to congregate, but there was also lots of other space so it would not feel crowded even with a house full. The area around Kiwi lodge is stunning in the fall. Kay was especially easy to work with and she even left us a special surprise to help us celebrate! So thoughtful!

Great Vacation Rental

We rent a vacation camp annually and found Kay to be one of the most pleasant owners to deal with. She called the evening we checked in to see if we had any questions or needed anything. I've never had an owner do this. The camp was one of the most well stocked we've ever stayed at. It's a beautifully decorated and roomy log cabin....beautiful furnishings. It's a very quiet area. My family enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you for sharing your vacation cabin with us Kay.

Enjoyable,very clean house!

Our family of 5 recently spent a week at Kiwi Lodge. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. With two teenagers and a 9 year old, the house was plenty big enough to give the older kids their space when they wanted it. We all enjoyed the hot tub, kayaks and played games at the large dining room table. Kay was very accessible and got back to use immediately via phone and email when we had a question. We've been to the Farmington area many times and always enjoy eating at The Harvest House. We also went to the movie theater in town and 3 of us watched a movie with popcorn and drinks for under $30 - a great bargain! One day, we drove to Auburn to play miniature golf at Tabers Golf and Restaurant. The course is right on a lake and a lot of fun to play. While there, we went to Mac's Downeast Seafood for a good lobster dinner. A couple of us tried out the public golf course in Wilton as well as Diadema Golf Course in North Anson. Kiwi Lodge is in a great location with plenty to do at the house or within an hour or so drive.

Peaceful family vacation

We recently spent a week at the Kiwi Lodge with our sons, ages 11 and 13. It was our first trip to Maine and I looked at hundreds of properties before finally selecting Kiwi Lodge. And it did not disappoint! We spent most of our trip on the lake in the kayaks and peddle boat. The kids loved jumping off the dock and we all enjoyed the family of ducks that visited daily. We ate every meal on the porch, played badminton, relaxed in the hot tub, battled it out on the Xbox Kinect and did a few puzzles. Farmington is a cute town and there are plenty of places for a family hike. Portland/Freeport are a great day trip. But when you leave, you'll really just want to be back on the lake! There were a few days where we had the entire lake to ourselves! I highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a great family vacation.

Kiwi Stay

My wife and I stayed at the Kiwi Lodge along with our 2 daughter's the first week of July. Everything you could need for family fun on the lake was provided. Two kayak's, canoe, paddle boat, and an inflatable row boat. The dock was perfect to sit back at night and watch the fireworks on the lake. Kay was an absolute pleasure dealing with throughout the whole booking process. Kay also provided very detailed directions on how to get to the cabin. Along with instructions for the provided wifi, tv access and so forth. Plus took the time to highlight some points of interest that are close to the cabin. The house has all the amenities a family would need. Full kitchen, washer, dryer. Vacation was totally relaxing on the lake. With some days our family being the only one's using the lake. Would stay at the Kiwi Lodge again without hesitation.

About the host

Hosted by Kay

Host profile image
Our family has been hosting for years now. We love it! Our regular guests have become friends, as we've met and talked over the years. Even if we don't meet in person, learning about our guests through our communications is deeply rewarding. I grew up in a farm community where everyone knew everyone, so rural Maine feels like home. I left my native New Zealand with plans to travel widely and after doing that, ended up living in a big city in the US, so after the demands of urban life, it was a joy to find this wonderful log house. It has become a precious retreat for our family. Great neighbors, helpful and friendly. Endless outdoor activities. The Maine culinary and farm cultures are constantly evolving, enhancing the quality of life. We love to stop by the roadside stands for fresh vegetables, fruit, grass-fed beef, home-made organic bread, free range eggs! The farm to table movement just keeps growing in Maine. The local supermarket is great; the local Gifford's ice cream parlor pulls us in; the library selection is as good as the wonderful staff - I could go on, but come and find out for yourself!

Why they chose this property

The moment we saw the house, we loved it! As soon as we stepped inside and saw its charm and excellent design, we knew that this was the special family retreat we had dreamed of. Peace and privacy with super friendly neighbors as well - it's an unbeatable combination. We've been here since 2010 and every year we enjoy it more! Every year we find different hiking trails, meet new people, find more historical and sightseeing spots and even better restaurants and roadside stands.

What makes this property unique

What could be better than breakfast on the deck, watching the early morning mist rise from the water and a string of ducklings following mother to their own breakfast. Then there is the decision on whether to have the canoe-kayak race or go fishing or hike to the top of Mt Blue. If the energy level is not high enough, we could visit one of our favorite antique stores in a quaint river town (there are so many nearby) or zip over to Black Acres for some of their richly flavored steak to grill for dinner, unless everyone wants lobster again. We can do a few lengths out to the swim raft and back, or just stretch out in a lounger on the lawn and read to our hearts content. Tomorrow we will go hiking - or maybe just swing in the hammock and not do too much at all!
