About the host

The house felt like a refuge the moment i saw it, and the young owner had put in many loving touches, like rock walls and patios, and a fragrant cedar walk-in closet. It took many years to afford the upgrades and artistic touches, and each has been a labor of love for me, as well. My uncle was a volcanologist, and chose the location of Kawaihae village because it was above tsunami danger, and out of the way of thousands of years of lava flows. It is a safe perch, yet close enough to the ocean to see a humpback whale breach from the yard. You can lie in a chaise at night and see a brilliant night sky, the way it looked before city lights clouded the atmosphere. In the morning, you can be at a pristine beach where the hotel guests pay upwards of $700 a night, and the houses cost millions - the drive down the hill takes a couple of minutes! It is a great, time-saving location, and even the paramedic's station is less than 5 miles away. The house has lent itself to green considerations - re-purposing things like an antique cabinet into the bar, recycling wood during renovations, and a move to solar power. We try to care naturally for the land and have been rewarded by native birds (our birder guests counted 34 species!) and butterflies. We hope you feel the joyful and healing nature of this house we call hali lani, 'house of heaven'.

The unique benefits at this house:
The location of this house means that you can drive to the beach on a moment's notice. We often go first thing in the morning, and again to watch the sunset, or the whales in winter. We are also spoiled with the closeness of world-class restaurants (yes, you can go in shorts and aloha shirts!), and fantastic shopping. I was able to buy the house next door, and with two houses side by side, it is extremely convenient for families or groups.

Why they chose this property

We feel that this has become the finest home in village. Beautiful inside and out. The new Pelican water filtration system truly makes a difference in the taste of the water and makes it unnecessary to purchase of bottled water. The home is furnished with interesting decor which we have obtained from various parts of the world. The back patio and well kept lawn area is a great place for relaxation and has a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean and Kohala Coastline.

What makes this property unique

Solar powered with central air conditioning. New state of the art Pelican water filtration system attached to the incoming main water supply. Master Suite has a large wood lined walk-in closet and completely remodeled master bath area with walk-in shower.
The kitchen is also new with all the latest features. Bar top hand made from re-purposed 200 year old Chinese Elm.
