About this property

Spacious 1790 Captain's estate, large pool, near beautiful beach

Enjoy our beautiful pool or gorgeous nearby beaches. Large (45 by 22) pool with bluestone patios and wisteria-covered arbor, surrounded by rhododendrons and an English garden. Pool is open Memorial Day-Labor Day.

With so much room both inside and out, our home is perfect for multi-generational families. The layout gives privacy, but also space for everyone to be together.

Built by a prominent sea captain who fought in the Revolutionary War, our home is infused with charm, character and beautiful details evoking its rich history and the sea.

Poised on 4 verdant acres. Rolling lawns, massive trees, flowering shrubs and English gardens create an ideal county setting.

The main house is decorated in an English country style with antiques and original hardwood floors. It sleeps up to 8 with 2 kings, 1 queen and 1 full bed. The Writer's Annex can sleep up to 4 more (double upstairs and queen sofa bed downstairs) and is available at additional cost.

Enjoy walking, biking or a five minute drive to Singing Beach; A scenic 15 minute drive to Crane's Beach. Walk to town.

The commuter rail runs through Manchester and North Beverly providing easy access into culturally and culinarily rich Salem and Boston- two of America's most interesting and historic cities.

Wonderful family vacation rental

My family and I had the most delightful vacation at this home. We enjoyed our days by the beautiful pool or on Singing Beach just a walk or bike ride away. Our evening dinners were at home where we enjoyed cooking together in the very nice kitchen or at some of the great local restaurants. We hope to return next summer!

Wonderful Home in a Historic Setting

We had a wonderful stay at this home in Manchester by the Sea. It is a lovely old historic home extremely well situated close to town and transportation. It was a wonderful place to enjoy a family reunion with many meals eaten outside by the pool. We were there during an intense heat wave, so the pool was heaven and terrific way to cool down after the day's heat.

We enjoyed our stay at your beautiful historic home. Thank you, Mary, for pointing us to places to dine and visit. We enjoyed dining at CK Pearl, Aillies, and the Lobster Pool. Great New England Vacation

Lovely grounds, huge pool, plenty of space to spread out, well-stocked pantry... so many things you don't find in many rental houses. Our multi-generational family really enjoyed our stay. Quiet getaway with rich history

We had a wonderful week at this historic property fully stocked with just about everything you might need. The pool was refreshing, and the beach/town/grocery store easily accessible. Anniversary Celebration

The house had a very historic feel to it. All the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. The dining room was quite large, accommodating all adults easily. Kitchen table was a great spot for the kids and playing cards in the evening. The grounds are gorgeous. Having a pool made the spot perfect for the kids. Manchester is a darling town. Singing Beach was a hit with the family.

Summer Family Reunion

Our family had a wonderful stay at this beautiful colonial home. Exploring the history of the home and property was so interesting. And the grounds are simply amazing. The trees, bushes, flowers are meticulously maintained, the in-ground pool is pristine, and the location in beautiful Manchester-by-the-Sea is perfect.Our hosts, Dana, and her sister Mary, were always available when we had questions, and she was so gracious with her time and suggestions. There is so much to see-and-do in this beach town. And one evening we all took a fun commuter rail train (you can park at the station which is 1 mile away) into downtown Boston for dinner. And of course, there are the beaches. Singing Beach is the closest and just gorgeous, especially as the sun goes down.I highly recommend this VRBO rental location.

Great New England Vacation

My family spent a week at the house. More like a mansion, historical and beautiful inside and out. We had a great time at the pool area, traveling to all the nice towns in close proximity. It was a hot week but the air conditioning units and fans helped keep us cool. The property manager was on call at all times and very responsive and quick to resolve any issues we had, which were a few minor. Would happily book again.

Perfect New England Experience

If you want the most authentic New England stay this house is definitely it! It is so big that it will take a day to get used to all the nooks & crannies. But it is the most stocked house I’ve ever stayed. The grounds are spectacular words can’t even begin to describe it. The location & proximity to every is super convenient. 20 minutes from everywhere on the north shore.

The house was even more than we expected. So close to the darling town of Manchester by the sea. Just a note. If you Uber from the airport you don’t need a car. We wasted $1,200 on a rental car. You can walk to the train station that will take you anywhere you would want to go

An amazing retreat!

This is a lovely, quiet and large retreat in the timeless town of Manchester-By-The-Sea. It is located close to the main highway yet you can’t hear it. Town is less than a mile away and Singing beach a bit beyond. That made for lovely morning walks to start our days. The house was the perfect size for our party of 8. It offers large areas to gather and also smaller rooms for more privacy. Something for everyone. We can’t wait to come back next year!

Lalonde Family Vacation Week

Beautiful house with lots of space for our family of ten. The kitchen was large enough for all of us to be in there at the same time cooking together, eating together -- cleaning up, of course -- with an adorable nook that was perfect for our grandchildren to play in and be close by. The bedrooms were spacious, plenty of bathrooms, nicely appointed, and very comfortable overall. The grounds were large and park-like with a beautiful pool that we really enjoyed. The property were very responsive to our few requests. We highly recommend this property.

One week vacation in August

It is a beautiful, comfortable house in a lovely setting and a great location. The pool was a huge bonus. The elevator was key, as we had 2 elderly's with us. The near by beaches are beautiful and easy to get to. The owner was very helpful and responded very quickly with any questions. The house is a little difficult to find, especially in the evenings. Waze does not take you to the correct driveway. Overall, it was a great stay!

Classy and spacious property in a great location

Just like many older houses in that part of the country, this property has a style of its own. The occasion was the marriage of my daughter at Turner Golf and Country club and due to the many activities preceding the wedding this property location was ideally suited. There were 5 couples easily accommodated and the owner and her local representative (Living next door) are very congenial and welcoming. It is not a new property but it has a very comfortable feeling. The only blemish is that dealing with Home away is a taxing experience but it was well worthwhile putting up with their ineptitude after all. The proximity of many beaches is an other added feature.

Great vacation property for multi-generation family vacation

We were fortunate to have great weather for the week which enabled us to fully enjoy the house and the property. We had morning coffee and every meal out by the pool which has a big patio and plenty of seating including a vine covered pergola. The large yard next to the pool provided good entertainment for the kids on break from swimming. The owner provides pool and yard games for all ages. A five minute drive from the beach was great. We bothered with parking permits for Singing beach which Dana fully explains how to procure. Best beach we’ve visited in Massachusetts-good size, not too busy, nice tuck shop. The sleeping accommodations were good, the kitchen a nice place to gather and the library a nice place for the adults to decompress after the kids went to bed. Good proximity and easy access to other Cape Ann towns. My recommendation is to be sure to grab a dinner or lunch at JT Farnhams Clam shack in East Essex (cash only).

Favorite activities include early morning runs on Crane's Beach and afternoon walks around Black and White beach. We also enjoy kayaking up the Essex river. Mary's sister, Dana, also helps with the house.

This 1790 Sea Captain's estate is infused with historic charm. Stately situated on a beautifully landscaped 4,1 acres, the estate is perfect for enjoying nature and the ocean. With 5,000 square feet the home is both spacious and private. . Close to some the best beaches in New England.
Manchester-by-the-Sea, established 1645, exudes a delightful village charm. It is on Cape Ann, the more relaxed, less crowded Cape. Cape Ann's beauty is recognized by the many renown artists who chose to paint here including Winslow Homer, Milton Avery and Edward Hopper. The area still has a thriving artist community and art galleries. The seafood is among the world's best. Local farm stands are minutes from the house. Excellent restaurants are close by.
Manchester-by-the-Sea has a superb public school system, an excellent library, tennis, basketball and pickleball courts.
We are just over 30 minutes from Boston with its rich cultural heritage and its renown arts institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts. Boston is also easily accessible by train.
From New York: Boston is just 3 and 1/2 hours by Acela or 50 minutes on the Delta shuttle- Arrive in less time than getting to Montauk, and to a much more relaxed pace.

The yesteryear elegance of our antique home is blended with modern appointments- a sunny California kitchen and granite counter tops. The charm of our historic character combined with English Country comfort including plush, down filled sofas and chairs, a leather recliner - relaxation is yours!
The four acres feature gorgeous gardens, large lawns and a pool. ( Pool is shared with carriage house). The established trees provide for shade and cooling summer breezes. A wealth of birds regularly visit the estate including hummingbirds and a family of wild turkeys.
