The kitchen has modern appliances; electric range/oven, microwave, two standard drip coffee makers, an antique electric refrigerator, a freezer (plus an antique wood cook stove for the adventurous sort - though best used for ambiance on a cool morning while bonding over your morning coffee). The kitchen is arranged as the early kitchens were, with the table in the middle of the room.

The house is heated and air-conditioned with an electric, forced-air, whole house system. Plus there are a wood-burning fireplace, and three wood-burning stoves for ambiance.

An outdoor fire pit provides hours of entertainment for young and youg-at-heart.

This house is made up of two log cabins, one moved up from a lower location on the same mountain, and another moved in from another property, joined together by a great room into one large historic log cabin. There are four bedrooms plus a bunk room, three full baths plus another with sink and tub only.

Two of the bedrooms and bathrooms are on the main floor. Note that all bathrooms have claw-foot tub/shower combinations, but no handicapped accessible showers. There are 6 landscape steps from the driveway up to the yard, and then two more steps into the house.

Sleeping arrangements:
Hand made period quilts cover all beds.
The arrangement is perfect for two families to occupy with semi-privacy.

Bunk area (second floor near bedroom three) - 3 twin beds. Kids love this room with its unusual doorway
Bedroom 4 / loft (second floor over kitchen with its own stairway) - 2 double beds and a narrow couch. This is a large room with a private stair. There is no door, but it feels quite private (this is my favorite room) and there is an adjoining bathroom. Air mattresses would fit in this room for extra bed options.

Bathrooms furnished with restored cast-iron sinks and claw-foot tub showers, and modern water-saving toilets.
Bathrooms 1 & 2 - main floor
Bathroom 3 - second floor
Bathroom 4 - second floor above kitchen

For us it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The perfect location for a UVa friends reunion. I was worried that the cabin would feel small because lots of photos are smaller than how they appear, but it was just right. Truly grateful I found this place.

Beautiful Location

This cabin was perfect for an extended family vacation. The location is remote enough to enjoy some quiet time and enjoy the surroundings, but close enough to venture out for hiking, fishing, and beer/wine tasting. The bedrooms are well situated so we weren't on top of each other. The covered porch and rocking chairs were the best part of the house!

Excellent Get-Away

We loved the remoteness and rustic feel of the property/house! Great in accommodating our group of 12 - loved sitting on the front porch and lighting the fire pit. We were there for three nights and we did not watch the tv once - testament to how much fun we were having as a family. We also hiked and walked and visited vineyards, ciders and breweries! All in all, the property/house gave us the perfect platform and environment to have a very memorable 3 nights! Recommend without reservation, unless you want something more luxurious and a pool.

Book Club Getaway

We were 9 women celebrating the birthday of our founding member, and we could not have picked a more perfect spot. We were fortunate to have great weather, so could enjoy the many trails on the mountain, fire pit and front porch swing, then settle in by the fireplace in the evenings. The cabin exudes charm and character, yet was comfortable and stocked with every amenity. By the end of the weekend, we each were looking for reasons to come back with family or as an annual book club getaway.

Gorgeous weekend and fun times

Super time had by all. A group of 10 women celebrating a 60th and a 40th birthday. Cabin a nice gathering spot. Love the glass openess between 2 cabins and the fireplace. We enjoyed 3 wineries one day, hiked up the mountain one day and enjoyed a dinner in Charlottesville. Be aware that driveway up to cabin would not be fun in snow or bad weather. We had beautiful weather but did have 4 cars which can be tricky to park and turn around at top.

Lovely cabin in mountains

Pretty spot perched on the side of a mountain. Quaint double-cabin with modern amenities. In between the Route 151 and Route 29 corridors in Nelson County. Enjoyed our stay. Great family time. Played games, cooked meals. The only downside is the 15 minutes to get down the mountain, though the gravel road was in good condition and the trip gorgeous each time! We traveled each day to the many restaurants, wineries, cideries and the cool Crozet Tunnel, so the distance down the mountain did not slow us down. A great spot in the mountains. We would return again for the firepit when not in July-August.

Old time charm with modern comforts, perfect for our large group!

This cabin was a perfect fit for our large group of 15. Between the roomy common areas and the porch and fire pit seating we never felt like we were on top of each other. If anyone felt the need to have their own private, quiet space then the bedrooms provided an escape as they are well separated from not only the living areas but also each other. The layout is very smart and comfortable. The youngest kids in our group loved the "secret" bedroom! The cabin is very clean and has absolutely everything you need. The overall feel is of a place that's been in the family for generations rather than a temporary vacation rental. Working wood stoves and hand-hewn logs provide authentic old mountain cabin vibes but air conditioning, satellite TV and wifi mean you certainly aren't roughing it! The location is well off the beaten path and completely private but a reasonably short drive to the Blue Ridge Pkwy/Skyline Drive for our daily hiking excursions. I highly recommend this place to outdoor lovers and those who want to get away from it all!

Great Cabin, cool atmosphere, amazing stars one night!!!!

We stayed at this double log cabin for a 2 night family get together.in late March. 7 adults, no kids. Plenty of space, authentic cabins with a newer section connecting them. I would say the description and pictures are spot on. We loved eating in one night (most appliances are updated and the old refrigerator did well). We LOVED having an outdoor fire both nights. The negatives in my opinion may NOT be negatives for others. We are either city or suburb dwellers. It was cold in the house even with the heat as high as it would go (65). We were cold sleeping and just never warmed up (we did hear the upstairs bedrooms were warmer). And the listing said it was not accessible. Please take that seriously. None of us have any mobility issues and are relatively fit. But there are lots of roots in the yards and when it is dark, your phone flashlight doesn't cut it. The stairs outside are not exactly right (some small rises, some giant rises) and there are no handrails, no rail around the porch. So this 67 year old kept telling everyone all weekend to watch the roots and then fell down the outside steps the last day. Nothing broken, but it will be a while before healed. Also if I had known how windy, and gravelly the "street" and driveway were, I pesonally would have picked another place. But again, we do not drive those types of roads often and saw a young guy flip his car on the first day. Just know this place is rustic but enjoyable.

About the host

Hosted by Susan Pierce

Host profile image
This property was purchased by our Grandfather in 1953 as a working apple orchard. As a local Charlottesville businessman, he wanted to create a country getaway on the mountain. We've made his dream a reality by relocating, restoring, and enlarging the original log cabin. Our extended family spends holidays and long weekends here. We also own the next closest house, a 10 minute walk - an attractive timber frame/log house built in 2000, and renovated in 2020. Ask us about it - it's available too!

Why they chose this property

When you really want to get away from it all, this is the place. This double, restored log cabin is located on 400 acres of forested mountainside. Wildlife abounds; bear, variety of bird species, raccoons, deer, bobcats, flocks of turkeys. On a clear night the sky is dense with bright stars (UVA conservatory is located close by because light pollution is so low). Once or twice a day you can hear a train whistle far in the distance, to take you back a century. The cabin is centrally located to the area's wineries.
Charlottesville is so close by that in 20 minutes you can be at a UVA football game or University of Virginia graduation, or at the historic mall complete with its outdoor pavilion and live performances. It's the same distance in the other direction to Wintergreen Ski Resort. There are many activities within easy distance along scenic local byways; historic locations such as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville and the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton (not a typical museum, but instead an experiential gem, especially if you have youngsters and teens with you), cultural experiences such as Blackfriar's Shakespeare Theater, Kluge - Ruhe Aboriginal Art Museum, outdoor adventures such as tubing and canoeing on the James River and hiking, apple and strawberry picking, Skyline Drive for fall colors, antique stores, wineries, breweries, horse shows, golf, fine dining, contra dancing, Lock'n Music Festival, Blue Ridge Rock Festival, and much more!
18 miles to the convergence of the southern entrance of Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive, the northern entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail, and U. S. Bicycle Route 76. Hike or Bike the newly restored Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel one way or out-and back. (Flashlights/headlamps necessary.)

What makes this property unique

This historic log cabin is food for the soul. If you want a special weekend or long-weekend for a special someone or a special birthday, or you just want a complete change of pace, this is the place for you. Where else can you have the experience of the American Frontier, within a few hours of major east-coast cities, but with all of the amenities of modern homes. It may be hard to imagine the sounds of yesteryear - bird songs of dozens of native and migrating bird species, the rustle of breezes in the trees, a train whistle in the distance... You may be graced with a rare sighting of wildlife, and will certainly experience the lifting of spirits that come with a fresh air / outdoor lifestyle.
