Conveniently reachable by car, you drive through the Castle's vineyards, arriving at a gated drive lined with cypress trees. On the right is the magical guesthouse with soaring spaces, 15' arched, thermal window and breathtaking views. Both houses have indoor/outdoor living with three shaded terraces. Stone paths lead to the swimming pool area. All bedrooms have individual AC units and screened windows. The first floor is kept temperate due to the thick stone walls.

Main house
On the first floor, the living areas open onto two beautifully furnished terraces. The furnishings are 17c to 18c Italian walnut, with original museum-quality paintings throughout.

The kitchen is the focal point with its large, working hearth, dining table that seats 12, original Italian walnut 17th century cupboard and modern work area. Behind the kitchen is a fully stocked pantry with every convenience and a full bath/laundry room.

Stairs lead to the second floor smaller living area, with a sofabed, desk equipped with printer and smart TV. This area opens onto the pool, the tower bedroom suite and the main bedroom wing where four bedrooms are served by two full bathrooms plus the nearby tower bathroom. This is a lovely quiet place to read, do yoga or work at the computer. Each bedroom is appointed with good hanging space, custom linen duvets, screened windows, AC units and new mattresses.

Guest house

The first floor includes a dining area, living room with double sofa bed, working fireplace, fully equipped kitchen and pantry. The air-conditioned bedroom is located on the upper floor with en suite bathroom and walk-in closet. The 15' window frames the cypresses. The bedroom looks onto the olive grove. Its an architectural jewel.

Pool: The 33' x 13' saltwater pool sits under the olive grove with postcard views of Castello di Vicchiomaggio and amongst scented gardens of jasmine, lavender, roses, rosemary, bay and fruit tress. A veranda and three large umbrellas provide shade as do the chaise longues with individual sun umbrellas to shade the face.

The property is private, comprising 9 acres that includes the gardens, large olive grove and surrounding oak forest. We absolutely loved our stay in Greve. The villa was wonderful. Plenty of room, comfortable with a great kitchen complete with Nespresso maker as well as traditional drip pot. The pool area is lovely as well as all the surrounding grounds. Federica was a wonderful contact for us throughout the stay. She was great with the planning before traveling and extremely helpful once we got there. It made all of the difference for me and my group. I would not hesitate to stay here!

We are a Washington DC based family with strong family roots in Italy. We have travelled over the world and fell in love with this property, which we purchased in 2022 and have since renovated and furnished with original furniture and paintings from our family's ancestral house in Italy. We very much enjoy helping guests make the most of their vacation by understanding their interests and suggesting activities, many off the tourist track. The house is managed by a dear family friend, Federica, who lives nearby with her husband, two daughters and a host of pets.

Why they chose this property

We chose this part of Chianti because of its beauty, weather, culinary traditions, convenience and history. The Castles of Vicchiomaggio and Verrazzano, built in the Eighth Century and later converted to Renaissance villas, are amongst the oldest in Tuscany. Vicchiomaggio played host to Leonardo da Vinci and Verrazzano was the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, a XVI Century captain who discovered New York Bay . Nearby Montefioralle gave birth to another celebrated explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, after whom America was named. The art cities of Florence and Siena are a short drive away, as are Badia a Passignano, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, Brolio, Badia a Coltibuono and the hilltop villages, which make Chianti unique. Also within easy reach for a day trip are Pisa, Volterra, Lucca, Arezzo, Cortona and the Val d’Orcia, as well as the beach towns of Castiglioncello, Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. The Cinque Terre are not far away.
.
We are next to Greve--a lively market town with every convenience. In the morning, the freshly made brioche are still warm. Find your favorite butcher who will prepare custom dishes from their own livestock. After a day's activities, we often have an apertif or enjoy dinner on a terrace overlooking the famous main square watching the children playing in the square.. The open air market is Saturday morning in Greve and Sunday morning in nearby Panzano.

Florence is a scenic ride of about 30 minutes, which brings you to convenient parking at Porta Romana. From there, it is a short walk to Renaissance churches with celebrated paintings, lively piazzas, great restaurants and sweeping views of the city. Cross one of Florences historic bridges and you are in the centro with one of the greatest concentrations of artistic works in the world.

What makes this property unique

It feels as if you've stepped into a Renaissance painting. There is a special light. The photos do not do it justice. The light shining in the house. The giant oak shading the dining terrace. The peacefulness of the olive grove. The views from the pool. And the surprise when a fox, hare, pheasant or even wild boar crosses your path.

The property is commodious and sleeps a large group but offers many comfortable corners and niches in the house and garden for reading, writing, yoga, listening to music or a massage. Many of the furnishings and paintings come from the owners' family and have been passed on through the generations.

Importantly, the location is convenient for touring not only Tuscany but also traveling to other Italian cities. We are close to both the high speed trains that connect Florence to Rome (1.5 hours), Bologna ( 30 minutes), Milan (1hr 40 minutes) and near the main expressway--the A1--that connects Rome-Florence-Bologna-Milan. The area is well served by airports at Florence, Bologna-with direct train from the airport to the train station and Pisa. Thus you may be in the heart of Chianti and the Renaissance but are not far by train from ancient Rome or medieval Bologna.
