Rustic Cedar Cabin on the River beneath Mt Index with intimate Hot Tub
Saghalie Deh Cho. Unplug ! After spending a few days here we discovered that it truly was as if one “dropped off the face of the earth and into Paradise”.
Returning after a weekend spent simply watching the river, we quickly discovered time here changes if you allow yourself to sit with the flow of the Skykomish passing through you. A cabin retreat like this needed a special name. Many of the place names in the Pacific Northwest are a mishmash of French, English, and the ‘locals’. Drawing upon the spoken word of these diverse speakers, a language that came to be known as “Chinook Jargon” was developed so the European trappers could talk with the indigenous peoples who lived here. “Sky ko mish (for example) translates to “Up River People”. The words ‘Deh Cho’ meant “Much Moving Water”. And that phrase came to refer to a ‘crazy’ person, as it was felt that such a person had fallen into a wild river and was ‘lost to us”.
Given that we came to know that when you visit the little cabin that sits next to the river you will come to feel that you have literally ‘fallen off the face of the world’, Deh Cho would be the perfect fit for us. But it is more than that . . . the cabin surrounded by tall pines and giant ferns . . . tucked away and secluded . . . feels like a little slice of heaven on earth. The locals didn’t really have a concept of ‘heaven’ but in Chinook Jargon “Saghalie” literally translates as “above”. So adding the word 'Saghalie' to 'Deh Cho' . . . the name given to us translates as: . . . “You have fallen off the face of the earth and into Paradise”.
We are proud to share this with you and it is our hope that you will discover "saghalie deh cho" if you spend a few days here. Relaxing from the day to day worries of your hectic life. Rejuvenating your spirit. Retreating to a place where it is quiet enough to hear the voice that speaks inside you. And leaving you . . . Renewed.
The cabin is a one bedroom 400 square foot cedar cabin surrounded by about 400 square feet of decking. A small kitchen, shower, toilet, wood stove, hot tub and river access make it a comfortable spot to put your feet up. At an Elevation of 636 feet, winter months find that the cabin is usually easily accessible but yet close enough to Mt Stevens that it gives snowboarders and skiers downhill slopes but a mere a holler up the road. Nearby hiking trails turn into snowshoe and cross country ski routes to waterfalls, and mountain lakes. The nearby town of Index hosts premiere whitewater river rafting and vertical rock climbs. Down Highway 2 in Gold Bar, you will find restaurants, grocers, antique stores and info on winter sports. We would be remiss not to mention, this is Sasquatch country. Knock on a tree and see if you can get a knock back.

Thanks - we loved sharing our cabin with you. Just a small correction for clarity's sake - we sit on the south fork of the Skykomish river. (As opposed to a lake).
This was by far the best experience we have ever had with a vacation rental. The owners were so attentive and helpful and the property was simply impeccable. The ample supply of wood was very much appreciated. The cabin is so cozy and warm! I highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to get into the mountains and explore the "quiet life."
This cute cabin is in a great location. Very private and in a beautiful spot in the Cascades. The owner, Liam, is a great host. Very accommodating, quick to respond, truly wants you to make yourself at home and have a good stay. Unfortunately the cabin itself is overly cluttered with personal items and needs a good thorough cleaning.
This was a great place to escape and relax. Even though it’s in a community it still feels very tucked away and private. Anything you might have forgotten can be found here. Before our stay ended we were already wishing we could stay a few more days.
The owner is wonderful, very responsive and accommodating! We would love to stay here again one day :)
What a truly amazing experience! The indoor living is only surpassed bu the outdoor living. Truly a place of whimsy and magic. So quaint and cozy a fabulous place to get away and get lost. The views of the river are amazing. We cannot wait to come There and back again.

“It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Please consider this you home base anytime for a glorious quest or adventure.

Amazing little gem on the river
My sweetheart had to work on the day we were heading out, so I went myself to get things set up before we went together; the feeling of serenity was so strong that I had to fight to leave to go pick her up. There are wonderful touches throughout the house and the property that help to make it a special place to stay. We can't wait to come back, hopefully for a longer rest next time around.

Every time we get a chance to go out -- we find we can not leave to go hiking or snowshoeing - a trip to the nearby store is almost agony - we just are so immersed in our peace that anything that might disrupt that seems . . . well, overrated. So we know the feeling. And then - I suppose I should mention when we finally have to drive away we must stop at the top of the drive and look back - wishing it was a 'longer weekend'. Welcome back anytime.

Absolutely Charming!
We were absolutely thrilled with Saghalie Deh Cho. Fantastic view and so perfectly appointed for a little cabin on the river. Every detail the owners quite thoughtfully put into the place was charming! I think we spent five minutes just walking around the place ooh-ing and ahh-ing over how great it was before settling in for the weekend. It was a fantastic place to escape the daily grind. Our hosts were incredibly prompt when we needed questions answered and very helpful - they even were willing to ship the dog blanket we accidentally left behind back to us! Highly recommend this place when you need to unplug and unwind.

Winter Wonderland Getaway
When I was a kid growing up in Florida my grandparents owned a small cabin in the Maine woods. I have so many fond memories of that place, and this cabin brought me right back to that happy spot.
The cabin was clean, well appointed and very comfortable. The wood stove provided plenty of warmth for the whole cabin, and there were additional heaters in the bedroom and living room if we needed them. While we brought some wood with us, the cabin has more than enough. There were dry logs and kindling in a nearby shed, along with wood stacked up along the outside that was on the wet side. We found that once a good fire was going, the damp wood burned just fine. Sleeping came easy for us in the cabin. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable and there were plenty of warm blankets.
The cabin features a great deck and hot tub with wonderful views of the river and Mt. Index. Christmas eve was particularly magical. We hung out in the hot tub drinking cider while snow fell silently.
During our first evening a heavy snow storm knocked out power in the entire region. While we had no more internet, I was able to text the owner, Liam, who provided us with constant updates from the electric utility website until power was restored. It was only a brief and minor convenience for us, and we felt very safe knowing that Liam was available to help us out if needed.
We had a fantastic stay here and I highly recommend it. Our hosts Liam and Heidi were so generous, kind and convivial. We will surely be back.

This was the perfect getaway for sure! Great views and much privacy. We will be coming back to this one for sure. Oh and the Cabin owners are amazing and are so nice, easy to work with on any questions or needs. We are thankful for this getaway spot💛
Beautiful small cabin located by the river. Other properties around but still felt secluded. A short distance from Steven's Pass for some winter activities. We had 4 people in the property and although small we all had a great time.
This property was the perfect couple’s getaway in Index. It is such a cute cabin and we really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub after hiking. It’s on the river with a great mountain view out the large living room window. The views really can’t be beat. We also liked watching the different birds that enjoyed the bird feeders on the deck. Liam is very informative and the whole process was smooth. We would definitely recommend this place! Thanks for a great trip!
We needed a quick getaway and wanted peace and solitude to relax with our dog and this place was a wonderful place to do it at! The deck is very dog friendly and the hot tub was amazing!! Would definitely recommend this cabin!!
The wife and I brought our 4 year old son, 12 year old daughter and our German Short-hair Pointer for a long weekend escape from the city. The cabin was great for us, well appointed with all the essentials and very clean. Our dog truly enjoyed all the birds visiting the bird feeders, the kids loved the river and Mom and I enjoyed the hot tub. The area was extremely quite and peaceful. Considering that dogs are allowed adding the gates to the deck was a wonderful idea! The kids took the hide-a-bed with the dog, and Mom and I enjoyed the very comfortable Queen bed. This is a wonderful cabin for a couple or a small family with a of couple younger children. We truly appreciated Liam and Heidi sharing their cabin. Thank you !!!
I highly recommend this property. It is a cozy cabin nestled by the river - to which every little detail has been lovingly paid attention. Liam was an attentive host; and, from the hammock to the hot tub to the very comfortable bed, this was the perfect retreat. We will be back.
such a perfect cabin retreat, exactly what i needed. the river, birds, hot tub, mountain view, and cozy home were wonderful. thank you liam and heidi!

About the host
Hosted by Liam Cole and Heidi Heimarck
We live in nearby Everett, Washington. Both are writers who purchased the cabin as a retreat where anyone can connect with their individual muse. We both manage Artspace Everett Lofts, residental housing for artists located above The Schack Arts Center in the downtown core. Everett is located a little under an hour away. Close enough for us to be available to you should you need anything not provided there for you.
Why they chose this property
In the late nineties, we were looking for a place where we might escape the go go go life-pace of Seattle, a retreat where time slows and the creative muse can sit with you. This spot on a curve of the south fork of the Skykomish river was presented to us and we took it. We found the serenity of the place, the abundance of ferns and cedars, the flow of the river and the occasional eagle flyby to be a welcome relief and retreat from the everyday.
What makes this property unique
Remote yet close, intimate but expansive, a break away from the barrage of the internet and technology but connected with the heart of nature without sacrificing comfort. The cabin is a Pan Abode cedar, which can be an aromatic delight. Birds of all stripes flock to the feeder on the deck. Even a weekend with the sound of rain falling on the roof is as relaxing as a day in the sun in the hammock. Located directly on the South Fork of the Skykomish River just a hop, skip and jump from Canyon Falls.
