About this property

The Sun House at Freshwater Bay: Oceanfront

The Sun House at Freshwater Bay.

Come enjoy the Sun House at Freshwater Bay. Situated oceanfront in Washington’s most beautiful no-bank beach community, the Sun House is the perfect place to unwind from city life. Listen to ocean swell endlessly grooming the river rock and sand beach from your second story accommodation. Taste the salt air, and let your stress melt away.

Look west, out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Pacific Ocean, then let your eyes follow the distant shore of Vancouver Island, past Victoria, and the San Juan Islands, to the marvelous peaks of the North Cascades. In summer, the sun streaks across the sky, warming the beach and illuminating the offshore commercial shipping traffic, before finally setting over the glistening ocean horizon.

It’s a short stroll down the beach to the mouth of the Elwha River. Here Coho and Chinook salmon offer the viewer and angler seasonal delight. With the rhythmic cycle of the salmon, come bald eagles, a plethora of seabirds, and river otters. If you get lucky, catch the Orcas playing out front, or more commonly spot herring balls, sea lions, and seals fulfilling their roles within the unique coastal ecosystem.

For those who come for recreation, the opportunities are limitless. From mountain biking and sailing, to hiking, mountaineering and fishing, the greater Port Angeles area has an amazing variety of activities at your fingertips. Widely known among surfers for having the best point breaks in Washington State, the Elwa River mouth is prone to deliver when tide and swell align in harmony. On more mellow days, enjoy Kayaking, Tide Pools, and exploring the many miles of beach to your heart’s content.

Only 15 minutes away, the Olympic National Park stands in awesome splendor. From glaciers to rainforests, the park is truly one of a kind. In winter, enjoy downhill and Nordic skiing at Hurricane Ridge. When the summer rolls around, enjoy thousands of miles of hiking routes through protected wilderness, or simply drop by Lake Crescent for a swim in perhaps the most beautiful lake in the continental United States.

Approach the property via Place Road, as it switches back past the mouth of the Elwha River, narrowing, then snaking amongst the storm swept cedars. Weave past a handful of beach houses to your private getaway. You will know you found paradise the second you arrive.

The Sun House is 1196 square feet of beachfront fun. It encompasses the top half of the house, as the bottom half is a separate space and not included in the rental. Completed in 2005, the new construction features massive weather pane windows, vaulted ceilings, hardwood countertops, and a gorgeous river rock gas fireplace. Every room in the house has unstoppable views out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and 100 feet of low bank frontage. In the evenings, enjoy a glass of wine on the huge hardwood deck, or set out a romantic dinner of fresh crab.

Please note: Renters must be comfortable with a tall staircase to enjoy this property, but the view is worth the climb.

Our stay here was a dream. The view and proximity of the sea were incredible. We saw otters and seals playing in the waves, and even an orca in the distance. Walking the beach each morning at low tide was lovely, finding some beautiful stones and stumbling upon tide pools with small crabs and anemones. The house itself was fantastic. Very clean and comfortable beds. It had everything we needed and more. Great proximity to the various places we wanted to explore at the Olympic National Park. We definitely hope to visit again.

Fabulous house, unparalleled view

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this comfortable, well-appointed house. You can’t ask for a better setting or location, which is not far from downtown Port Angeles and a 25-minute drive to Lake Crescent. We appreciated the serenity, the spectacular view, and the gorgeous sunsets. The comfort of the house was an added bonus. Do not pass up the opportunity to stay here!

Favorite spot

This house has everything. The views, the beach (with tide pools down on the very left corner of the beach past all the houses). Plus stocked with EVERYTHING you might need in the kitchen. We cooked every meal there and they made it super easy for us. We WILL be back. Best VRBO we’ve stayed at.

Loved it!!

Possibly my favorite overall experience with a vacation rental. The kitchen is well stocked with quality essentials, the beds are comfy, the shower had water pressure and the view of the bay is amazing. We loved our daily walks along the beach and having a front row seat to sunrises and sunsets. The property and location are great. Would definitely stay again. Thank you!!

Amazing Stay!

Our family spent our 1st Christmas in the PNW here and it was wonderful. The views from the house were amazing. To be right on the beach, and be able to see and hear the waves crashing was so nice and relaxing. The house was clean, cozy and had a perfect set up with everything you could possibly need. Thank you for sharing your home with us. :)

Beautiful location

Stunning location, peaceful, very clean, comfortable bed. For the price (~$1100 for two nights with taxes and fees) was a little disappointed by the broken blinds in main bedroom, squeaky shower head, and lack of any curtains/shades to block light (makes it hard to sleep in summer when sun goes down around 1030p and is up by 5a). The views were incredible, though, and if you’re looking for a weekend away would still recommend it!

Relaxing Stay

My Daughter and I loved staying at this property for a relaxing get away. Sun House offered the beautiful views of the beach, great sunsets and storm watching on the rainy days of our stay. The home was well outfitted with everything we needed to make meals and relax. Very quiet and comfortable. The keyless lock made check-in super easy. Close to Olympic National Park for hiking and exploring. Really delightful. We will return.

Spectacular in and out

The apartment on the second floor is perfection! The home is right on the beach and the view is beautiful. Right on the strait across from Canada which is visible. Quiet neighborhood close to Port Angeles and the park access. Apartment is beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Bed is comfortable with a view of the beach/water. Kitchen is modern with everything you need. Deck is a fabulous place to read and watch the water. It is one of the nicest rentals we have ever been to and we’ve been to many. Highly recommend!

Right on Beach with 180 degree view of ALL of Freshwater Bay

We own a property down the street, but it was booked with guests of our own. So we rented the Sun House for 3 nights. One night just me alone, then I picked up my husband at SeaTac, and he enjoyed me the last 2 nights together at this little gem. We love it here for only 2. Perfect size. Not too small and not too big. Just right. 3-6 would be a challenge with only 1 small bathroom. But it can be done. What’s amazing is it’s right on the beach. About 1/2 between each end of Freshwater Bay. So you get a 180 degree view of the entire bay, and wide open unobstructed views of Vancouver Island BC, and all the activity in between. In 3 days I watched rough crashing waves one day, medium ones the next and glassy barely lapping waves on our final day at super low tide. In the evening we enjoyed nightly BBQ and wine, and watched the amazing sunsets to the west as it sank behind the hump of the “dolphin” shaped peninsula. First evening we had spectacular clouds that created a very dramatic end of the day as they were lit up from below. The following 2 days the sun sank quietly under cloudless skies. The home is perfectly outfitted. Lots of the same amenities I have in my own home. So it was easy for me to cook. I felt right at home. The beds were very comfortable. We both slept like logs, lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the waves on the beach. I will recommend this place to our own guests when they have larger groups and cannot have them all in my home. I will also recommend this place to friends and family that want a place to go to alone or with another. Wonderful surprise. We will be back ourselves when our place is booked. Loved it here at the Sun House. Thank you Jacque. Hope to see you at one of our Place Road neighborhood meetings.
