About this property

1882 Heritage House ~ Bali Bed, Porches & Gardens ~ Downtown Los Alamos

RENAISSANCE IDEALS. PIONEER SPIRIT.
The oldest standing home in Los Alamos, built in 1882 — and still the most alive.

Step inside 140 years of California history, meticulously restored with a philosophy as old as the house itself: buy next to nothing new. Every hand-carved beam, original stained glass window, and century-old redwood was here before you — and was worth saving. What surrounds you isn't manufactured charm. It's the real thing.

THE OUTDOOR LIFE
Most historic downtown properties give you a porch. Heritage House gives you an entire outdoor world.

The fully fenced, lushly landscaped grounds are built for living: sink into the Bali swinging bed in the covered Swinger's Lounge — a full-size hanging bed perfect for afternoon naps and golden hour conversations. Gather around the wood-burning fire pit (wood provided) for evenings that stretch long. Two BBQs — gas and charcoal — because serious outdoor entertaining deserves options. Two reclaimed wine barrel water fountains create the kind of ambient soundtrack that makes you forget your phone exists. Multiple decks and covered porches for every mood and time of day. And presiding over it all — a life-size metal cowboy art installation that stops every guest mid-step.

Tucked into the garden: the Kissing Cove — an intimate outdoor nook perfectly designed for photos, stolen moments, and the kind of memory that follows you home.

The historic water tower stands on the grounds, adding atmosphere and privacy that no new-build could replicate.

This is not a backyard. It's an outdoor living room designed for the people who know the difference.

THE ROOMS
Every bedroom at Heritage House has a name, a story, and a personality. None of them are accidental.

Boudoir de Bouge — Ground Floor Primary
The most stately room in the house, and she knows it. A grand king bedroom with an extraordinary private dressing room, an en-suite bath featuring a iconic Victorian high-tank pull-chain toilet and claw-foot soaking tub, and the kind of morning-light situation that makes you want to cancel your checkout. Ridiculous in the best possible way.

The Gatsby Room — Upstairs
Roaring 20s vibes, king bed, and enough glamour to make you feel like the party never ended. Also day bed (converts to queen). Daisy would approve.

Brown Chicken Brown Cow — Upstairs
A loving homage to the dairy farmers who built this house in 1882. King bed, and enough charm to make you forget you're sleeping in a room named after a chicken and a cow. You won't forget it though. Nobody does.

The Rest of the House
A Restoration Hardware queen sleeper sofa rounds out the sleeping situation — Heritage House sleeps 10 comfortably. Two full baths with claw-foot soaking tubs. Two powder rooms, including one off the kitchen with a Toto bidet (yes, really). Swank laundry room with plaster walls and a stained glass door. Working gas fireplace. Smart TVs. High-speed WiFi. Great antique desk for remote work. Games, cozy nooks, and beautiful details around every corner.

THE KITCHEN
A fully equipped chef's kitchen built for people who actually cook — Thermador 6-burner cooktop, additional warming oven, and every tool you need to pull off a proper dinner. The kitchen banquette seating area is crafted from an old-growth fallen tree from the Santa Barbara mountains. The driftwood chandelier in the dining room was made by hand from reclaimed coastal wood. This is not a builder-grade kitchen. Cook accordingly.

THE LOCATION
Half a block from the historic 1880 Union Hotel. Steps from Bell Street — Los Alamos' main drag, where acclaimed restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and the quiet heartbeat of Central Coast Wine Country all live within easy walking distance. Los Alamos doesn't announce itself. That's exactly why the right people find it.

THE WELCOME
Arrive to a curated welcome basket: local wine, manchego, farm-fresh eggs, snacks, and exclusive 2-for-1 wine tasting coupons made just for Heritage House guests.

EVENTS
Heritage House is also a licensed event venue — zoned for multi-use and able to accommodate up to 75 guests for intimate, inimitable gatherings. Weddings, salons, milestone celebrations, creative retreats. Event bookings are not available through this platform — search Los Alamos Heritage House Events for information.

GOOD TO KNOW
Guest count should not exceed reservation number. Additional guests beyond 4: $100/night per guest (50% discount for children under 2). No outside visitors unless pre-approved and listed on reservation.

Dogs welcome for a flat fee of $200 per trip. Must remain under guest control, not be left alone, be housebroken (doggie bags provided), and stay off all furniture. Guests are liable for any damage. Note: historic soft wood floors may be damaged by larger dogs running through the house.

Overall this was a fantastic home to stay in during our weekend in Los Alamos. The space was clearly curated to create a unique experience for guests. Every corner of the home presented a new adventure and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The home was also comfortable, spacious, and well stocked. The water temperature in the upstairs shower was a bit tough to manage. Hosts were very communicative and supportive. We will definitely stay here again!

Great location! Recommend!

Very quaint older home with a lot of character. Our family and my sister and daughter stayed. We had a wedding at The Union Hotel, so the location around the corner was perfect! The town is small and adorable!

A perfect Los Alamos stay!

Spent a weekend at the Los Alamos Roadhouse with a bunch of ladies and couldn't have been happier -- what a special, funky and comfortable spot for us all to congregate. With lots of sweet decorative touches and nooks to hang out, it was perfect for our group. The hosts accommodated all our needs and made us feel right at home in their space.

Great hangout spot, tons of charm!

We loved our stay at the Roadhouse— it’s like staying in a piece of history but with comfortable modern amenities. The location was perfect for walking to everything in Los Alamos. The fire pit and outdoor living room (David Bowie picture) were a big hit. Friendly hosts with great communication. Would happily stay again!

Comfortable house.

We enjoyed our stay here. All the beds were very comfortable. We had 6 adults in the 3 bedrooms. The town is fun to visit. We were there for a wedding at the 1880 Union hotel. It is about a 1/2 block from the hotel and in the center of town.

Very historic house

This house was built in the late 1800s and it has so much character. Location is great as it’s a quiet area yet close to wineries, SB, Solvang and Los Olivos. Host was very gracious. This house has a lot of character and highly recommend

Perfect spot for the weekend

We were in town for a wedding at 1880 Union and this was the perfect location. No AC, but town cools down at night and the house stays cool as long as you close up in the morning. We had no issues with heat and it was 90+ outside all weekend. House is beautiful and the hosts are very nice!

No Privacy

These people that rent this house are not owners of the house. They sub lease this house to make a profit. They have the Ring surveillance camera with out Acknowledge or consent of the guest/renter. . The guest have the right to be notified to be videoed/voice recorded with our consent and acknowledgment, which we did not. They constantly are spying on you, so they can charge you by stating you have had “unauthorized guest” this is there famous come up! Never felt so violated. It almost seems like they stay at the water tower on the same property and watch you! This is why you are not allowed to use or see it, even though it’s on the same property. It’s super weird. They waived to us during our stay. Like if we didn’t know it was them. The refrigerator is full of there food, leaving hardly any room for yours. The closets are full with there clothes again leaving no room for yours. Very baser. During our stay it was cold at night. The heater was programmed and did not work at night. They controlled this too. As if they didn’t charge enough to stay there. We were very cold and uncomfortable the 2 nights we stayed there. If you look at there reviews do you wonder why they only have 3? The locals in Los Alamos state they rent it out frequently. So not sure why they only have 3 reviews. It may be because when you walk in the have a summary of how they expect to be rated 5 star. I would definitely stay in Los Alamos again, but definitely never here nor would I recommend staying at The Roadhouse unless you want to be watched every second of your stay! Freaky!

Lovely home in a fun hood

I came here with my fiancee and two other couples for a 4th of July getaway. The property was great and well-stocked with everything we needed. The hosts were very communicative and readily available. The town lost power at one point and we heard from the hosts very quickly with an ETA from the power company, etc. They had 100's of candles stashed and told us where to find them. Turned into a lovely dinner! Los Alamos itself is a quaint little town with a few good restaurants and lots of wine options. A fun getaway for a group of friends like us.

We had such a lovely stay at the Los Alamos Roadhouse! My family and a few friends spend a lovely weekend here! The house is adorably decorated and has a very warm and welcoming energy! We had everything we needed for a few days of cooking, exploring the town, chats by the fire, paying darts, and relaxing. Excellent stay in a beautiful house with lovely hosts!
