75 Paces to Beach Stairs! Walk to Whistle Stop Deli/Bakery and Roadhouse Diner

YES, WE REALLY ARE THAT CLOSE TO THE BEACH AND WE TOOK PICTURES TO PROVE IT! So be sure to check out the pictures in our photo album. These pictures, together with our owner's map of Union Pier say it all--from our front door, we are less than a two-minute walk to the beach. (view map, then magnify a few times). We have DEEDED access to our beach through the Luna Gowdy Beach Association. Our beach is private for the residents of our small subdivision of about 50 homes. The designated beach area is about 300 feet of lake frontage, so there is plenty of room. Our beach is seldom crowded, although it is crowded for holiday weeks, like the 4th of July and Labor Day.

Another nice feature regarding the beach is that our unit is located on the lake side of Lakeshore Road. You never have to cross that road or any other road to access the beach. Our cozy condo/cottage (585 sq. ft.) is one of only nine units, surrounding a spacious courtyard. Our cottage is attached to another cottage. We are a corner unit and we share a wall on one side with our next-door neighbor.

When we renovated our unit, and we wanted to keep all of its 1930's charm, but we wanted to add some contemporary comforts too.We loved all of our cottage's wooden, wrap-around casement windows, but we added plenty of skylights as well.

Our full kitchen is complete with a GE dishwasher, Quartz countertops, a brand-new Whirlpool fridge, and a new microwave. Be sure to check out our photos.

When it came to the bathroom we looked for a simple vintage design for replacing the fixtures, but we couldn't resist installing a Jacuzzi bathtub. We furnished our cottage with mostly beautiful antiques that we have collected over the years. Most are over a hundred years old.

Even though it's cooler by the lake, we thought central air conditioning was a must for when the temperatures pushed too high. To eliminate those inconvenient trips to the laundromat, we installed a brand new LG combination washer/dryer (locating it in a bedroom closet, hiding it from view, but making it very, very handy). Doing laundry now is so much easier. However, we kept our outdoor clothesline up for those who still like to air-dry their wet bathing suits and beach towels.

We wanted fast WiFi, so we installed Comcast Internet along with Comcast Cable TV. We have a small DVD library, but we also encourage guests to bring their own DVDs for special movies and programs that they or their kids enjoy seeing. We installed the TV in the bedroom, due to all of the glare and reflections coming from our wrap-around windows and skylights in the living area. The bedroom location makes TV viewing so much easier and enjoyable.

We also have a hooked-up, Weber gas grill right outside our back door---no propane needed! Now, how convenient is that?!

Our cottage rental includes TWO parking spaces (designated on-street parking) and a huge outdoor common area (it is actually to the side of our cottage, about 35 paces from our back door) for picnicking and ball-playing......and of course, our rental includes the use of our spectacular Lake Michigan Beach. We think our private Luna Gowdy Beach is one of the clearest, cleanest, and best beaches in Union Pier! Besides being so close to Lake Michigan, we are an easy walk to the Whistle Stop Grocery and Deli and the Red Arrow Road House Restaurant (3 to 3 1/2 blocks).

We think our cottage is wonderful, but please keep in mind that our cottage is NOT a party house. Our cottage is much too small for a wedding or family reunion or any kind of party with lots of people. Remember it's only 585 sq. ft.--- that's little! Also, keep in mind that we only have parking for TWO cars. Our absolute MAXIMUM IS FOUR PEOPLE, THAT INCLUDES CHILDREN. We must abide by this maximum number, as it is also mandatory as dictated in our rental license with Chikaming Township.

Absolutely loved this place! Rosemary was very helpful checking us in and showing us how everything worked. The cottage is small but has everything you need, and you can tell it’s very well taken care of. The beds are super comfortable, the kitchen is very well stocked with very nice pans and appliances. Everything about the place is quietly luxurious, even down to the jacuzzi tub! Would definitely come back!

Wonderful stay!

Rosemarys cottage was perfect for our little family! The kitchen is well stocked and we were able to cook a few meals. The access to the beach was awesome for getting back and forth with our infant. One thing to note for future renters is that the only TV is in the bedroom- not a deal breaker for us but worth knowing ahead of time!

Peace at the beach

This lovely cottage provided a peaceful, relaxing getaway. It had everything we needed and the beach was so peaceful and quiet - both early mornings or for the two beach bonfires we had at night. Great restaurant options around with great communicaton and information provided from the owner. We would totally stay here again!

Beautiful beach vacation

We had a great time at the cottage. It really is a short walk to beach just like it says. The beach was nice and private with soft sand and beautiful views. The cottage was clean and small but nicely decorated. The only thing is I wish there was a place to wash off your sandy feet before heading inside.

Charming cottage!

Rosemary greeted us with all the tips on how to run the cottage which was a great help. We loved the cottage my 9 year old grandson said he could live at the cottage! It was roomy for the 3 of us. All the amenities you could need. Private beach was a plus. Will stay again

Lovely Little Home

It was very nice, very clean. Located within a short walk to a very nice beach. Only 2 flights of 31 stairs each with benches if needed along the way. The 2 bedrooms are nice with 1 washroom which off the kitchen.

Steps from the beach

This is a clean, cozy cottage. Fits 4 adults nicely with one bathroom. It has everything we needed without excess or clutter. The beach is down several flights of stairs but very close (75 steps). I would go back without hesitation. The owners are friendly and work hard to maintain the property.

Amazing

My husband and I absolutely loved our weekend getaway (babymoon) here in Union Pier, MI. The cottage is SO CUTE and stocked with everything you need including items for the beach: towels, umbrella, chairs, etc. The little space is thoughtfully utilized. Mike and Rosemary are so welcoming, helpful, and kind. We cannot recommend this place enough. Just minutes from New Buffalo, local eateries nearby, bike trails, dunes hikes, wineries and breweries, it's a perfect place to stay for a visit to beautiful Lake Michigan. We are looking forward to our next getaway.

Lovely Cottage Experience

This property is everything as described and more. It is clean, fully-stocked, and about as close to the beach as you can be without being directly on it. Rosemary provided a great quick tour of the property upon arrival. The beds and bedding are very comfortable and we loved the charming decor and appreciated all of the natural light from the windows. The beach is lovely and the sunsets are AMAZING!! Everyone we met on the beach was very friendly. There are many things to do in the area (if/when you desire time from the beach or from simply relaxing in the cottage). We had a wonderful stay and would return in a heartbeat - our tween and teen sons were never bored. Thank you, Mike and Rosemary, for sharing this beautiful property to make our stay very special!!

This cute cottage was very comfortable and clean. Even cuter that the photos! We were 2 couples here for a long weekend. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of nice towels and beach towels, great hot water/pressure, and perfect heating/cooling. Rosemary showed us everything we needed to know. It was very quiet. And easy access to a beautiful, quiet beach. We would love to go back.

About the host

Host profile image
I am a general contractor and construction manager in Chicago. My wife and I have been enjoying this area for well over thirty years. We now reside in Riverside, IL, but Union Pier will always be our first love.

Why they chose this property

We searched for a long time before we purchased our cottage.
Proximity to the lake and old world charm were the characteristics that we were looking for and our unit at Whispering Pines Cottages fulfilled both requirements.

What makes this property unique

Not only do we have a great location, but it has all of the vintage details that only an older cottage could have...the arched entryway into the kitchen, the old hand-sawn hardwood floors, 6 lite casement windows and that wonderful original, antique kitchen sink. Plus we are close to everything that Harbor Country has to offer.
