Welcome to Sunset Shores — where the river slows you down.
Set along a quiet stretch of waterfront and surrounded by mature trees, this private riverfront retreat offers both peaceful restoration and year-round adventure. Whether you’re sipping coffee while watching the morning mist rise off the water, launching your boat for a full day on the river, or riding your snowmobile straight from the property in winter — this space gives you room to breathe and room to explore.
This is not a party house. This is a place to reset — or roam.
Winter Bonus: Snowmobile In & Out
In the winter months, guests can snowmobile directly from the property and access nearby trail systems without loading up and hauling out. Ride all day, then return to a warm, cozy retreat by the river.
After a day on the trails, gather around the firepit or settle inside and unwind.
Summer Perk: Boat Launch Less Than 1 Mile Away
Bring your boat — a public launch is located less than a mile from the property, making it easy to get on the water quickly. Spend the day fishing, cruising, or exploring the river, then return home to your private waterfront space.

It’s not a two bedroom. It only sleeps three.
It’s more of a studio apartment with no doors.
It is clean, nicely decorated and bright. The outdoor space is beautiful.
We had a great time! Arrived late and found the property. Thankfully it was a well marked property and looks like the pictures! Make sure to take screenshots of the directions as you lose service as you approach the location so you have all the info you need to find house and get inside

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad to hear you had a great time and that the property met your expectations. It’s always a relief when everything looks just like the photos—and I appreciate the helpful tip about taking screenshots of the directions ahead of time due to limited service in the area. That will definitely help future guests!
Thanks again for choosing to stay with us, and we hope to host you again in the future!
The unit is a converted garage next to the owners home. It had everything we needed inside to be comfortable, but the owner was on site and that made it awkward; because of that we did not feel comfortable using the back yard at all. Also, I had to come out early one day to move our car in my frickin pajamas because I didn't know the owners car was in the adjacent garage. We picked Vrbo because we thought they prevented on-site owners. Also, note that there is a cliff on the river, preventing access to it for tubing or kayaking, and the outdoor furniture was heavily stained and dirty.

Thank you for your feedback and for staying with us. I’m glad to hear the unit had everything you needed to feel comfortable during your visit.
I'm sorry to hear that parts of your experience felt awkward. Just to clarify for future guests: the unit is a standalone converted garage, not attached to our home. I mentioned in the welcome message that I’d be on-site and available if anything came up—I aim to be helpful, never intrusive. When I knocked that morning, it was simply to ask about moving the car to ensure smooth parking, as there is ample parking available on the property.
Regarding river access, there is direct access to the river at the northeast corner of the property. We’ll be sure to highlight that more clearly for future guests. I also appreciate your note about the outdoor furniture and will address that promptly.
Thanks again for your feedback and for helping us improve.
I spent a lot of time researching places to stay near family. We are elderly, there was no mention of no cell service or wifi. Only way we found VRBO, we had address. It's way out in the country. There was no instructions how to access wifi. I suggested to host how important that is. She said she would leave in future. We left as family, wouldn't be able to find us. We barely found our way out of there, as no gps service. I'm sure property ok for some families. Oh, in the photo's online, it appears, apt could be part of house. It's actually part of the garage. She could have also told us, she was home and could help us. I have been happy with other VRBO properties in the past. I wanted to do VRBO, cause I think hotels are boring. I wanted to be by the Muskegon River. The grass wasn't even mowed, difficult to walk to River. Actually it was beautiful there. Sorry, we were disappointed. Sincerely, Sandy & George Yates

Dear Sandy & George,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m truly sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations and that aspects of the experience caused you stress—especially while visiting family and looking for a peaceful getaway.
I want to sincerely apologize for the confusion about WiFi and cell service. Sunset Shores is intentionally set in a quiet, rural location along the Muskegon River to offer guests a chance to disconnect—but I fully recognize how important it is to clearly communicate those details ahead of time. I’ve already updated the listing to note the limited cell service and provide detailed WiFi access instructions prior to check-in, as you thoughtfully suggested.
Thank you also for the note on the property's layout and maintenance. The guest suite is attached to the garage but fully private, and I’ll be sure to make that clearer in both photos and descriptions. Regarding the yard, we've since scheduled more frequent mowing to ensure a comfortable path to the river for all guests.
While I was home during your stay and happy to assist, I now see the importance of proactively offering that support rather than waiting to be asked. I'm truly sorry you left feeling disappointed—I take that to heart.
I appreciate your honest review and hope your next VRBO stay brings the experience you were hoping for.
Warmly,
Tennille

I’m passionate about leadership, personal growth, and creating spaces that inspire both rest and reflection. As a host, I love helping guests experience a true getaway—whether you're here to relax by the water, connect with nature, or gather with your team or loved ones. Hosting is a joy for me because it combines my love for hospitality, design, and meaningful experiences. Welcome—I’m so glad you’re here!
Why they chose this property
I chose this neighborhood because it’s the perfect blend of natural beauty, peaceful seclusion, and easy access to small-town charm. Nestled along the Muskegon River, the area offers stunning waterfront views, serene forests, and abundant wildlife—yet it’s only minutes from shops, dining, and local attractions. What I love most is the calm that settles in at sunset, the sound of the river flowing, and the way people instantly feel more grounded here. It’s a place where creativity flows, conversations deepen, and time seems to slow down—whether you’re here for a weekend retreat or a family escape.
What makes this property unique
What makes Sunset Shores unique is how it effortlessly blends comfort, connection, and calm. Designed with families and couples in mind, our riverfront retreat invites you to slow down and truly be present—with each other and with nature. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows by the fire or watching the sunset from the riverbank, you’ll find space here to reconnect in meaningful ways.
There’s limited cell service—on purpose. But don’t worry, we do have Wi-Fi if you need it. Sunset Shores offers the perfect balance of unplugged moments and modern convenience, making it a one-of-a-kind destination for memory-making and meaningful time together.
