The Historic Causeway and Clark Island:

The cottage's location is steeped in rich history. The granite causeway that stretches across Clark Cove to Clark Island once served as a pathway for quarry workers, and it remains a striking feature of the landscape. Clark Island was settled in the 1780s and was home to an active granite quarry until the 1950s. The island’s granite was used in famous landmarks such as the Central Park bridges, the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, and the Library of Congress.

Clark Island is a magical place, with its 124-acre preserve offering a variety of mowed grass and gravel trails that lead you to beautiful beaches, the old rock quarry, and a diverse range of wildlife habitats. It’s a wonderful place to explore by foot, and only a short stroll from the causeway.

The trail winds through the island’s diverse ecosystems, with opportunities to spot wildlife, enjoy scenic vistas, and relax on the beaches. Lovely Experience and Great Location!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This home was wonderful for our family of 7. The house has been beautifully furnished and set up with everything you will need. The location is also what made this house special. The walks out into the water and exploring the tidal flats kept the children entertained for hours and hours. The large yard was great for frisbee and football catches. The island across the causeway provided great opportunities for light hiking. Maybe the most special part is the old granite quarry in the middle of the island. With its relatively warm water and large rocks for jumping, it was a magical place to spend time jumping, swimming, and floating! Also, being next to one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at was an added bonus. The owners of the Craignair Inn and Causeway Restaurant could not have been nicer. The food and drinks were some of the best that we have had anywhere! What made it more special was that they hosted a July 4th party on their lawn with their own fireworks. The one small thing to consider for large families is that it has only one bathroom. However, we knew that going in and managed it well with the kids. The tradeoff was definitely worth it!The location is also great because it is close to the Port Clyde Ferry if planning a trip to Monhegan Island. Grocery delivery is available from Rockland and plenty of great places to eat within 10-20 minutes! Lastly, the management company is superb. They are responsive to questions and helpful whenever you need it. They are just a quick phone call away.Thank you for helping to make our Maine vacation special.
