About this property

Pre-civil War RUSTIC cabin on 30 acres ten minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Maggie's Farm is a RUSTIC country log cabin that was built in the 1840's and has been kept largely as it was built, in a "dogtrot" style. If you seek a quiet, UNPLUGGED getaway in which to relax, rest and enjoy old-fashioned family time, you need look no further. WE ARE A DARK SKY DESTINATION. Maggie's Farm has a working fireplace in the kitchen a large stocked, family-style kitchen and living area, with two sleeper sofas. A full bath is on the main level as well. Upstairs is a master bedroom with queen and single bed, and a bunk room with queen, double and three single beds. Located on 30 acres with two creeks on the property, as well as trails to walk leisurely, porch swings to enjoy owls, turkeys, whipporwills and other birds and animals. Maggie's Farm is a step back in time to a slower, gentler way of life. A large fire pit for evening campfires awaits you, as well as horseshoe pit, badminton and a swing set for children after a wade in the creek. The cabin is 20 minutes from the Harvester Performance Center, roughly 25 minutes from Philpott Lake with Army Corp of Engineer swimming areas, and is about 30 minutes from Floyd, with its weekly music jams and popular Floydfest each summer, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is ten minutes away as well. The cabin makes an ideal gathering point for family reunions and , football weekends at Virginia Tech, , and it has a 20' x40' covered, lighted outdoor pavilion. It is five minutes from Ferrum College, and is on the Crooked Road Music Trail. Spring and fall are especially pleasant, with cool mornings and evenings to experience.

Wonderful stay!

The property and cabin included everything that we needed to be comfortable and enjoy our stay. The hosts were welcoming and helpful, and added to our enjoyment of Ferrum College's Graduation Day! We loved seeing the dogs visit us, too! Thank you so much for sharing this home with us!

An unforgettable stay!

We loved staying at Maggie’s Farm. Kerry was such a generous host and we loved talking to him (and his dogs!) The cabin is full of character, very well stocked and on an idyllic plot of land. We had great fun in the evening watching the fireflies and the stars, making good use of the bbq and fire pit. The nearby town of Floyd is well worth a visit, and we also hiked McAfee Knob, where we saw lots of amazing wildlife including a mama bear and her cubs. The cabin’s (reportedly friendly) ghosts did not talk to us once, but it was nonetheless a weekend we won’t forget!

Great get away

Absolutely loved this rustic, historical cabin. So very peaceful. Some of the best night sleeps I've had in a long time. The Grandkids had a ball and didn't want to leave. Kerry, the owner, was more than welcoming and supplying wood for the fire ring and fire place was a nice touch. We will be back.

Charm in a Bottle

This marks our third stay at Maggies Farm. Not much changes out here, just as one would hope when retreating back into time. There's an undeniable energy to this old place and the air that surrounds it, a positive one no doubt, beckoning for our return each late Spring. Many thanks to the gracious hosts and their small battalion of pups who always make us feel like family.

Transported back in time

Our grown children and grandchildren stayed at this charming rustic property over Thanksgiving. So much time spent laughing, cooking, and enjoying some unplugged time to together. The kids especially loved the huge yard for running and their football games. Many thanks to the owners for extending their hospitality. A one-of-a-kind experience!

Fantastic spot away from city life

This rustic cabin was a great stay for us. We were able to listen to the rain hit the metal roof, start a fire inside, and enjoy each other's company without the interruptions of constant phone distractions (no cell service). The property managers were fantastic, easily acceasible and quick to respond. They were never a bother and made sure we stayed stocked with firewood. I'll keep this place in mind when looking to get away again. Thanks!

One of the most enjoyable travel experiences of my life

I LOVED this place. It is a lovingly restored 1850’s farmhouse on the historic registry. The house is very private on several acres of beautiful property. There is a garden outside and an area for outdoor dining. The house itself is amazing!! Decorated with period furniture and decorations, and the fireplace was my favorite. I sat in a rocking chair in front of a roaring fire for hours. Highly recommend this place. I will be back.

Brilliant Experience

This was a wonderful, peaceful get away. The house is like stepping back in time to pioneer days (except with the luxury of electricity). The house and history is fascinating. We loved all the little touches such as having a camp fire laid for us and fresh eggs - Much appreciated. Our kids loved trying to catch frogs in the pond. We will be back for sure!!!

picture perfect

My family rented the cabin for three nights. We had a wonderful time on the property. The cabin is a fascinating historical structure and the grounds were beautiful. My young children had a blast exploring what they called the "pine needle forest" and playing in the small creek. The cabin had, clearly, been thoroughly cleaned and all the bedding and towels had been recently laundered. We had no issues or concerns about the cleanliness of the building. The property owners were delightful, accessible, and considerate. My kids were absolutely enchanted with the husband and followed him around like puppies listening to him tell stories about the property and the surrounding countryside. We could not have asked for a better place to spend some quite time together as a family.

Thanksgiving 2021

Libby was great with the communication and Kerry was great with the hospitality and checking on us. The cabin was such a neat experience! We meal planned ahead of our trip and if we forgot anything, there were a couple of markets just seven minutes away. There is no reception, so keep that in mind for any navigation needs. We downloaded Google maps for the local area and downloaded some music playlists off of youtube, when we went into town on a public wifi. Our time was spent cooking, playing games, reading and traveling to a few of the towns nearby. We had a couple of really cold nights, but one space heater and the available quilts definitely kept us warm. I would bring some house shoes to walk around in. This is a rustic experience and requires a sense of adventure and open communication with the hosts. We had a great time and will never forget it. The starry night sky was beautiful. Thank you, Libby and Kerry!

Historic cabin with great grounds. Wonderful hosts.

Ruuuuuuustic, which we loved. It offered what we needed. Such a cool piece of history. Totally unplugged. We were welcomed with a prepped fire pit and marshmellows ready to go. Each day started with a visit from Kerry and his dogs that included suggestions for the day, weather forecast and a bit of a history lesson. The surrounding area is beautiful. An easy trip to spend the day in the really cool town of Floyd. The grounds are great for walks and hanging by the fire pit. Be prepared, off the grid is really off. No cell service, no WiFi, no TV and no land line. There is a DQ nearby with free WiFi open very early and very late for when you need to look something up or check in with the world. Bring an old school folding paper map. It would be a tough area to be lost in. Overall it was what we hoped for with some nice surprises. A little more of a haul to get to Virginia Tech than we expected but that didn’t take away from our experience. Great hosts, great prpoperty. So glad we had a chance to experience it.

Maggie’s farm

I came for a few days with some friends to stay for Floyd Fest ‘24. I’ll start with the positives. The location of the cabin is beautiful. There is plenty of space to explore on the property. Floyd Fest was just a 25 minute drive away & the hosts seemed friendly and accommodating. Kerry left us a bowl of tomatoes which we enjoyed the whole weekend, and he took the time to come down and chat with us about the history of the house and the area. We also enjoyed the friendly dogs, Sarge and Phoebe! One criticism that I do have of Maggie’s farm is the decor. There was an overwhelming amount of figurines and artwork featuring civil-war-era “mammy” caricatures. “Mammys” and similar depictions are racial caricatures that were created as post-civil war propaganda and were originally intended to spread negative stereotypes about African Americans. There is a sign on the front door that says “wipe yo feet honeychile!” And another one in the shed that says “uncle Remuses biscuits: these sure AM good!”. We noticed a LOT of this decor throughout the house, along with a plethora of confederate flags and a tapestry of Donald trump holding a rocket launcher in the shed. Perhaps there are folks out there who may appreciate these kinds of political (and frankly racist) representations, but it wasn’t for us. It put a damper on what otherwise would have been a perfect retreat from society. Also needs a change in cleaning services! There was a distinct odor of urine in the upstairs bedroom.

About the host

Hosted by Libby Legg

Host profile image
We (Kerry and Libby) are retired and live on the property adjoining the cabin, which we bought to preserve its historic presence. The original owner built the cabin and raised ten children there before leaving home to fight for his country in the Civil War. He died at Gettysburg and was buried there, although there is a marker in the family cemetery located on the hill above the cabin. The property is in the process of becoming a working farm again, and work is the operative word! Between the two gardens, chickens, cats and Sarge, the rescue dog, not much "retiring" goes on in this holler, but we hope you'll enjoy the respite and slower pace as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

The cabin sets beautifully between the mountains, and affords its occupants the chance to slow down, listen and absorb the sounds of the creeks, the crickets and other wildlife. Maggie's Farm is an opportunity to unwind, unplug and mend. While it does have modern "amenities" like electricity and plumbing, it doesn't have cable, wifi or other distractions, giving ample opportunity for families to regroup, revive and renew their relationships.

What makes this property unique

The outdoor covered area would provide a wonderful area for groups to pursue a mutual hobby such as quilting or other crafts, and is well-lit with new electrical outlets for equipment and projects. Evenings on the front porch swing or on the glider on the back porch are sure to be a favorite time, before gathering around the fire pit to share tales and beverages.
