terrible.. couldn't leave fast enough. The amount of dust in the house was crazy. You could write your name in it. After opening the door, you could actually smell the dust in the air. Dead stink bugs ALL over the house. I had to sweap the floor, clean counter tops snd dust before we could uppack. Mouse poop on the bathroom towels. Get out of the shower and grab a towel, to find out that there is mouse poop all over the towels. Had to go to the second cabin whare the towels are rolled on the wall, to get clean towels for my family. The house was infested with wasps. We were getting stung inside the house and my child refused to go outside bc they didn't want to get stung. Wasp spray was in the house, outside and in the second house. Clearly they know it is a problem!! No cleaning supplies. No glass cleaner or bleach wipes.All bed sheets looked like they where unclean and dirty, like if they had not been washed and the bed was just remade from the last visitors. No TV or wifi. No matter how many times we put in the password and code, we could not get any internet. No way of letting family know we made it safe until we left for town the fallowing day. Don't have more that one bag of trash or you need to drive five miles to communal dumpster to dump it!!! All draws has games or blankets in them. No place to put your clothes. Had to live out of my suitcase for the whole time. The morning we left we could not leave fast enough- " Nothing but trouble"

The place was great. Lots to do on the property. Lots of wildlife to see. We happened to not have the greatest weather but what can ya do. We made the best of it. You do need a working outdoor grill. The flat top grill was nasty and my husband had to really scrub and clean it. Besides those two things we would absolutely stay there again.

Incredible retreat

This was our second stay at Carter's Hideaway. We will definitely return. Truly a tranquil and relaxing vacation retreat! The cabins are fully stocked with all amenities, the guest host is attentive and easy to communicate with, the pool is clean. Both of our summer stays we had problems with bees and wasps, but we learned to work around them. You can honestly relax and unwind from the rest of the world at this hidden gem! Cabin in the woods

Ride in to Carter’s Hideaway on Thursday evening in the dark was interesting, but we were rewarded with an excellent experience for 5 days/4 nights!! Not much was left to guesswork, as switches were well labeled, everything worked as expected, facilities were very well maintained, and we were able to relax and enjoy our time away from Martinsville Speedway. Would love to be there when the pool is open, but enjoyed the hot tub every day.

Wonderful & Relaxing Long Weekend Getaway

We absolutely loved our stay at these cabins. The private pool and hot tub kept everyone entertained for the long weekend and it was perfect for a laid back family vacation. The neighborhood dogs were the perfect highlight for my daughter who loves dogs. Tilley came first and was so cute and sweet. Bo was my favorite because he was almost identical to the best dog I ever owned and even his personality was spot on. We will definitely be back again! One of our favorite trips ever.

Overall wonderful experience. Did ask a question very early in booking that was never answered but it was irrelevant at time of checkin/out anyway so made 0 difference. Pool was perfect kids loved it day and night. Main cabin was very nice master stays 10* cooler than main room, which is fine by me. Downside to location of hottub is traffic through master suite and wet floor, but again not a deal breaker in anyway, just an observation. Thank you carters creek!

Great Getaway!!

We had a wonderful time at the property... My family and I can’t wait to come back to enjoy the pool when the weather is warmer. Also, we loved Bo, he was a great host 🤣; we will miss him 😊 The internet was not working during our stay and our cellphones didn’t have any service but for the adults, this was an added bonus... however for my son, this was terrible news lol. They had a landline phone however if you needed to make or receive calls.

We've stayed at this cabin several times and have always had a great experience — it's a beautiful place and perfect for a relaxing getaway. However, this time we were really disappointed with the condition of the pool. When we arrived, the water was very green, and the pump wasn't running at all. We contacted the management right away and sent photos. They said they would notify the owners and contact the pool service. After a full day with no update or improvement, we reached out again and were given the owner's number. She was kind and said she’d have her husband contact the pool company again, but unfortunately, we never heard back and the pool remained unusable for our entire stay. It’s frustrating because the pool is one of the main reasons we love this place. Other than that, we still had a good time, but we really hope this getsaddressed for future guests — especially since this has always been a go-to spot for us

when i booked the rental i requested july 19th through july 21st. Friday the 21st we were told we only booked for two nights i booked for three nights. if i knew it was going to be THAT MUCH MONEY for two nights i would not have booked it.

This is a nice place to stay. We didnt pay attention to how there was only one room in the main cabin. But it ended up working out great. We had our own privacy. Pool was great. There was one thing that freaked us out a little. There were alot of spiders. Im scared of spiders. This was just from them not taking care of them though. The first night we had one make a web from the tuck to the ground. Its out in the woods, so it should be expected. Besides that, it was seculded and fun to stay at. We definitely recomend. Very cozy for winter months too.

Bad business practice.

Everything was good except green pool when we arrived. Called management they were very responsive. While management was working on pool a brown substance came out of jets. After we finished our stay and returned home, I contacted the owner. And they were very dishonest about the entire situation. Guess I should have taken photos. Shame on me!!!!

We switched pool companies and it was the sand filter with the problem. We have since replaced the complete pool system pump and filter. Great stay, great area, bonus great dog!

5 of us (4 adults, One teen) had a great time swimming, building camp fires and exploring the area. No, the neighborhood dog stayed for a bit and he was awesome! Also, fireflies in the woods gave us a great show! Caretakers were great and quickly fixed a problem with the well pump. We explored Philpott and Smooth Mountain Lake and 3 of us went in a very challenging mountain bike ride. We all hiked in the area. Pool was awesome. 2 suggestions: 1.) The light in back needs to be on a motion sensor. It's very bright and diminished the ambiance of the campfire 2.) The water here is very hard, and smells of iron. Soaps don't seem to work right--even DAWN dish soap. I know it's an investment for a rental, but a water filter or softener would be a great addition.

Beautiful property just don't expect to be able contact the owners.

Beautiful property. We were excited to visit with our family of seven - Christmas to New Year's holiday. Sadly, after the first night's sleep my wife started feeling itchy and came down with a bad rash on her face, hands, and ankles from the bed. We contacted both the owner and the property manager using the numbers and email addresses given. They chose not to respond four times. We were seeking information for what in the cabin might be the cause of the allergic reaction. Since we received no help, we spent the week driving hours into town and back buying new bedding, medicines, and seeking medical advice. The rash got worse each day. The day we returned home she went to the ER and was put on prednisone. Had to cancel a week of work as well as her face was red and puffy by then. We will not be staying in this cabin again and we advise others with allergies to think carefully about renting here. 1 in 7 chance seems to be your odds as that's how many of us got it. There were mice in the walls as the kids saw them. And the bedding smelled strongly of detergent, so perhaps they were covering up something. Wish they had written or called us back.

Cousin Weekend Trip

Overall the stay wasn’t awful however, there are many concerns I feel pertinent to point out. My cousin, her daughter, my niece and I stayed at the cabin from a Friday to a Monday morning as we planned a fun girl’s cousin weekend! Due to work and kids school schedules we didn’t get on the road until later in the day and that put us coming in, in the late evening. Upon arrival, it was quite literally black as night. There were no lights left on at the cabin(s) so be prepared to use your headlights, phone light or bring a flashlight to see anything. Issue 1: There are two cabins (I missed reading this in the description somewhere); the main cabin and then a side cabin. The side cabin is just bedrooms and a bathroom in the middle. The main cabin has a master bedroom, living room – with a pull out couch, kitchen and bathroom. The main cabin is also enclosed within a white fence and unless you’re truly looking you don’t know how to get into the white fence. There is no sign that says “Welcome,” “Enter Here,” nothing. We walked around the main cabin and after looking at the white fence for a couple minutes, I had the thought that maybe part of the fence was a gate to let us in and I was right. A sign or some indication on where to enter into the white fence would be extremely helpful, especially after driving, coming in late in the evening and being tired, wanting to fight with a fence is the last thing you want to do upon arrival. Issue 2: Once in the main cabin and getting situated, we started discussing sleeping arrangements. We pulled out the sleeper and laid on it to see how it might sleep – you might as well just be sleeping straight on the coils. It was brutal. Thankfully we were able to get the kids to sleep on the pullout couch and my cousin and I slept in the main master bedroom. The bed in there is HUGE, a California King I believe so there was a lot of space however, the mattress wasn’t the best but compared to the pullout couch it was luxury. Issue 3: The water. If you have a weak stomach or you’re sensitive to smell, you are not going to want to stay here. I’m assuming they’re on well water which makes it smell of sulfur or rotten eggs for a better comparison. It is very overwhelming. The hot tub was a joy but the water in it also smelled like the rotten eggs so it made it a little more difficult to enjoy. After the hot tub I could still smell the smell in the kid’s hair when they would sit next to me, which was overwhelming. So fair

Shared from the owner: "Thank you for choosing Carter's Hideaway. We value our guests' comments and work diligently to make each stay memorable. -We apologize that the front porch light was not left on. I have spoken to my team to ensure this light stays on. We are also installing additional lighting as well as directional signage. -When you rent Carter's Hideaway you have use of both cabins. The guest cabin has two memory foam twin beds as well as two comfortable queen beds. We do have additional air mattresses with an air pump in the hall closet of the main cabin and keep extra linens in the dresser drawers. While we try to accommodate all guests' comfort, we're sorry the mattress didn't meet your preferences. -Our beautiful cabins are located on Horseshoe Point on Phillpott Lake. The country location of this cabin means there is no city water nearby so we rely on a regularly changed water softener and filter. In addition, our pool and hot tub are professionally serviced by a five-star pool company. This pool company does provide picture documentation when they service our property and we've never received reports of issues with the hot tub. Thank you for staying at Carter's Hideaway."
