Great location in a quiet residential area. The space was very clean. The bed was extremely comfortable. It was the perfect spot for a couple’s getaway in OC. Would definitely recommend
This house is so unique! Very comfortable, loved spending time on the balconies. Lots of stairs, but well worth the views. Everything is walkable from this place with lots of restaurants and activities nearby. Just a note that they do not provide any reserved parking - you are in your own with whatever street parking is available, which can be challenging on busy weekends.
Just like the photos. Wonderful place. I enjoyed the history of the house from the blue binder. As a note, within walking distance to local farmer's market!
We could not have stayed at a better place then this incredible home. This was the perfect place to celebrate our 10th wedding Anniversary. I am quite sure that we will stay here again.
What a truly unique stay!! We loved the history of the home, the location, the historic but absolutely relevant energy of the home. We will definitely be back!!
While the inside of this property was a complete delight, the outside structure was in need of some renovation. That didn’t bother me, but I understood that there would be a renovation soon. Hopefully , that will go quickly so that this magical property can be enjoyed again very soon.
This 1920's upstairs apartment is spacious with nice outdoor porches having a sea view. Gas fireplace is great.
The neighborhood is close to the harbor (5 min drive) and a great base to explore the good restaurant options in Dana Point Lantern district.
Excellent location. Fantastic ambiance. We were in town to celebrate our anniversary and attend a wedding in San Juan Capistrano. Couldn't have picked a better place. We loved everything about it.
A time capsule...I love history...and this place truly took me back in time..
I enjoyed it...parking can be challenging and the stairs a bit edgy..so just be very careful with that .. lovely place indeed.

the property is well maintained, beautiful view, quiet and good parking.
I am disabled and there were 20 steep stairs that were very difficult to negotiate, both up and down. I almost fell 3 times. Taking the luggage up and down was an intense chore.
This apartment is in a historic house and is so cool - the architecture and decor work so well together. Four balconies, including one with ocean views that is large enough for loungers and a fountain. Easy walking distance to PCH, and nice walking distance to the Strand and the harbor. Loved it all!
I won’t spoil the history of the property but it was very cool! The king size bed was so comfortable I want to buy one for my home. Modern kitchen with a brew coffee maker. If you arrive at night, it’s a little dark in the lantern district, use your phone flashlight. Host was very responsive to questions. Walking distance to Saturday market, harbor, and lots of restaurants. This is our second stay on Violet Lantern and can’t wait to come again
This is an adorable historic property that is just stunningly perfect. Clean, full to the brim of character, with all sorts of thoughtful, cute touches. The neighborhood is quiet and you feel like you're in another world. I cannot say enough great things about this place. If you're looking for something different, something not another boring hotel room, and if you love history and character and thoughtful places, this is for you. Everything, top to bottom, was perfect. Exceeded my expectations 1000%. Thank you for such an awesome experience.
This is a charming property, close to everything in Dana Point. The balconies and fireplace really take it to the next level. There are some wonderful plants in the yard, including a fragrant cabbage palm that smells like jasmine. The neighborhood can be a bit noisy at night, but I was prepared for that after reading other reviews.
I would definitely love to stay here again. Thank you!

Liked: Check-in, location
Mostly pleasant
Decor was pretty cool and it was staged nicely; however, not the cleanest upon arrival (dusty, hair in shower, etc). The hot water was virtually absent from the kitchen sink (low water pressure) and, while the outside amenities (balcony, etc) was nice, the incessant construction across the way didn't improve the atmosphere. Overall, a decent stay - if cleaner and without the construction.
All in all, this house was a great find.
The location is really convenient. We could easily walk to the farmer’s market, the harbor, to restaurants, or just explore Dana Point. The largest of the balconies is a delight to sit on and sip coffee in the early morning and enjoy the vegetation and the view. Parking was easy, even on street-sweeping days. The bed was comfy, and the shower was great. The whole set up was original, quirky, and fun. We would likely rent it again on a return trip.
We did, however, have some reservations.
Our first request for help from the manager was fulfilled immediately; our second was totally ignored; and for the third, we were given the obvious work-around but the problem (with the exterior lock) wasn’t resolved—and needs to be as we had trouble getting in one night — after which we locked only the door at the top of the stairs.
The lighting in both the living space and the kitchen leaves something to be desired. There’s not enough light for two people to read, knit, or do anything else that requires decent lighting in the living space. One person can just manage for a little while with the moderate light behind the large chair. And if you’re cooking after dark and want to tell if something is done, it can be hard to see.
Speaking of the kitchen, it is pretty well equipped for a rental, but lacked a few things that I could have used. If you’re planning to cook, check that you have what you need up front. Plenty of dishes and stuff. Do be careful if you use the oven not to take anything out of the drawer below it when the oven is hot without using the mitts. You can get warm (not hot) water at the kitchen sink only if you are running the dishwasher at the same time. A dish drain would be nice.
These were relatively minor inconveniences compared to our general overall satisfaction, but most would be easy to remedy and just make it that much better.
