About this property
Get Away, Relax, and Unwind
This cozy home is located in the small town of Grottoes, Virginia nestled between the shade of an old Oak Tree, Maple Tree, and Pine Trees. It sits on approximately three acres with a large field behind the house where kids can run and play. In the Spring and Summer, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the rose garden in the back yard. My father passed away in March of 2017 and left behind the old home place. He spent many hours in his rose garden and enjoyed delivering them to his wife in the nursing home. Since his passing, I've completely renovated this beautiful old home on Dogwood Ave and have also began to learn the art of growing roses. My father loved to help others and loved people and I am carrying on the tradition of helping others by offering a location where folks can come away, relax and unwind. There are two lovely bedrooms; one of which has two antique brass beds. There is a special room in memory of my father who was an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition, there are games for all ages and many books and memorabilia to enjoy. The kitchen has a modern yet retro look to it. There is an old red Formica table that seats four. You can also sit and enjoy the big screen TV while seated at the bar in the kitchen. There is a coffee station completely furnished with coffee and teas to choose from.

We have stayed here before, and will do so again! Karen goes the extra mile with a stocked refrigerator and kitchen. The home is quiet, clean, cute, and comfortable. It is a perfect location for getting to Shenandoah National Park and JMU. We especially enjoyed sitting outside and looking at the stars. Thank you Karen for always quickly responding to our questions, and providing a relaxing stay for us to see our son’s senior music recital..
Not only was the house immaculately clean, but stocked with all the little things that we needed for our stay. Karen was so kind to leave eggs, biscuits, and a variety of coffees for us. It was a great start to our first morning. I enjoyed feeling at home and being able to cook dinners for our family after the day of skiing. I would definitely visit again!
Karen was a wonderful host and made staying so easy. The home was extremely clean, comfy beds and cute decor. The neighborhood was very peaceful. We were there for JMU parents weekend. JMU was only 20 minutes away and you could take back road in without getting on I81.
What a wonderful home! Beautifully furnished with everything we needed and then some! The kitchen is well stocked and Karen left us a few essentials and treats. Karen was so communicative and kind. Would highly recommend!
fantastic stay in peaceful setting. Karen may the stay extra enjoyable with coffee options and creamers! Nice and quiet after an enjoyable JMU football game. We especially enjoyed the nearby fire trail which is part of the Shenendoah National Park, and Grand Caverns. We will be back! Best of wishes to Karen on her upcoming wedding! The importance of family (and your sense of humor) shines through your house.
The house was in great shape with everything updated and was very clean! It was a nice location to get to places and we enjoyed an evening of porch sitting! We had a great time!
We had a great time staying at this property. It was perfect for our family of 5 on our visit to the Shenandoah national park. The house was homey with a vintage decor. Would definitely stay there again.
Very well-kept and updated property in a quiet residential area a 30-minute drive from Natural Chimneys state park and Harrisonburg. It was an enjoyable 2-night stay with all the comforts of home.
We had a wonderful time visiting nearby family and staying at Karen’s home! The house is absolutely charming, clean, and comfortable. Perfect for our family. We will stay again when in the area.

Thank you Heather for your kind words. It’s always a pleasure having you stay. Hope to see you again in the future.
We had such an awesome time staying here! The home was so warm and welcoming and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable! It was so clean and was decorated in such a unique way that we loved! Our host, Karen was also amazing! She was so friendly and helpful, checking in on us during our stay to be sure all was good 😊
The moment I walked in the door, I immediately felt at home. The space is both spacious and cozy. The furniture is very comfortable, including the bed. I enjoyed sipping my morning coffee on the porch. I’m planning to return next year! Karen, the owner, was attentive and checked in to ensure everything was going well. I appreciated the eggs and biscuits she provided. I highly recommend staying here; the neighborhood is nice, and the surroundings are beautiful.
This was our last leg of our family road trip. Only stayed for 2 nights. But the house felt just like home all the amenities that we were looking for to just relax after long drive. And the owner even left some amazing extras which made it easy for us since we didn’t have to go to the store. We were able to enjoy caverns and a trail all within a 10 mins drive.
The house was well appointed and very clean. Comfortable and sweetly decorated. The location to campus was perfect. Our Host was a very kind and accommodating and made for a pleasantly stay!

About the host

I am a native from the Shenandoah Valley and currently live in Harrisonburg. I recently retired from 20 years working as an office manager in the dental field. Most folks I talk with say once you retire, you are much busier than you were before and this has proven to be true. My biggest passion is Missions. I love traveling to other countries to help others. I've visited Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and in recent years I have made many trips to Guatemala and Nicaragua to work in the orphanages and surrounding villages. When I am not traveling, I love to shop in antique stores, work in my gardens and spend time with family and friends. My newest adventure is opening up an Air B&B in my childhood home of Grottoes and I am excited for you to come, relax, and unwind.
Why they chose this property
My home place is located in a small town with a quiet neighborhood. It is within 15 to 20 minutes from the Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive, Cross keys Vineyards, Rocky's Antique Mall, Grand Caverns, The Lavender Farm, and James Madison University. My favorite local restaurant just minutes from the house is Wood Fired Oven. They have a great Steak and Cheese sub and the Pizza is awesome.
What makes this property unique
There are some beautiful old trees located at my old home place and in the summer you can sit in the shade of the old oak tree or sit on the back patio and grille your favorite burger or steak. Grottoes has a beautiful town park just minutes down the road with a walking trail by the river. In addition, my home place is within minutes of Grand Caverns. The cave has been open continually since 1806. During the Civil War and the “Valley Campaign” the cave was visited by both Confederate and Union soldiers. The park at Grand Caverns is filled with scenic trails for hiking, running, and biking. There are also picnic shelters, a pool, a miniature golf course, beautiful areas for fishing; and a fitness trail, featuring exercise stations with instructions at each stop. The peaceful setting at the park makes for an extra special experience here in the Shenandoah Valley!
