The space
Kolea Cottage is a private, stand-alone home completely separate from the host’s house nestled within thousands of acres of pristine rainforest.

Enjoy the outdoors on your own private lanai, featuring:
• A hot tub
• Fire tower
• BBQ grill
• Loungers
• Dining set

Inside, both bedrooms feature comfortable king-size beds and closets.
• Bedroom 1 includes a full en-suite bathroom with a tiled shower.
• The second full bathroom (with a tub/shower combo) is located off the hallway, across from the fully equipped laundry area.

The house is newly built, fully insulated, and outfitted with air conditioning and heating for your comfort.

• A variety of teas
• Half & half

You’ll also find a reverse osmosis water spout by the kitchen sink—perfect for refilling your reusable water bottle.

Stay connected with high-speed internet so you can work or relax in total comfort and privacy.

Eco-Friendly Features

We’re proud to be an environmentally responsible retreat. Here’s how we help reduce our impact:
• LED lighting throughout
• Low-flow plumbing fixtures
• Partial solar power
• Reusable dishes and refillable soap bottles to reduce single-use plastics
• Eco-friendly cleaning products whenever possible
Guest access
Guests may park in the driveway.
Access the home through the front door using a custom keypad code provided before check-in.
Other things to note
• We’re located in the rainforest at an elevation of 3,500 ft (1,000 m)—it can get cold and rainy, so please bring a rain jacket and warm layers.
• Cell service may be spotty, so we recommend enabling Wi-Fi calling during your stay.
• We’re near the most active volcano on Earth. While it’s usually peaceful, volcanic gas (vog) and minor earthquakes are possible. Rest assured, the home is built to the highest seismic safety standards.
• Like most homes in the area, we rely on catchment water, sourced from rain. Our on-site water treatment system removes impurities and sterilizes the water.
For drinking, we also provide reverse osmosis filtered water.

This gorgeous cottage along w/ the BBQ, hot tub, fresh coffee, comfortable mattresses, dishwasher and high quality beddings made the stay unbeatable for an island hop over the weekend. Mckenzie was a responsive host when contacted. The photos are accurate but doesn’t capture the true beauty and solitude of the cottage. Mckenzie thought of everything to include laundry soap/sheets and kind enough to leave half&half creamer in the fridge for our stay. The kitchen had necessary utensil's to use the bbq grill as we brought steaks with us from Costco on Oahu before we flew out. The home smells fairly new & feels like it hasn’t been there for years which made me feel like thousands of people haven’t slept in that bed. We would stay here again as we live on Oahu and thats a 45min flight away. I would like to remind everyone viewing this review to remember that groups of ppl may travel together and choose to stay at different accommodations for many reasons. We travelled with friends and our children so we met up once at our place so we could show our amazing accommodations and get payment for a large order of smoked sausage. VRBO we didn’t have a gathering or a party. We did show off our accommodations to 4 different heads of households and provide a tour of the home we stayed in. Thank you Mckenzie for having all the condiments and extra tea, pancake batter, oatmeal to include thin fresh bananas!

My name is Kenzie and I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. My husband and I fell in love with the Big Island 12 years ago when we worked on a mango farm in Kona. We loved visiting the little village of Volcano and exploring the Volcanos National Park. After a year we moved back to Utah but eventually we decided to buy a plot of land in Volcano. We finally made the big move in 2018 soon after having our son. We built our first home here and welcomed our daughter in 2021. As a family we enjoy hiking, going to the beach, gardening and looking after our chickens and ducks.

Why they chose this property

The best part about Volcano is that its a 5 minute drive to the most active volcano on earth! Otherwise check out the Sunday morning farmers market or Thursday night market at the cooper center or enjoy a round of golf at Volcano golf course.
