Aloha! E komo mai. Welcome to our Hawaiʻi Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit.
Hale Hubner Treehouse Cottage is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious lanai greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings.
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a full-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
Volcano is situated at 4000 ft elevation in ʻōhi'a and hapu'u rain forest. This means that the climate is not quite what most people expect when they think of Hawai'i. It is cooler in Volcano (upper 70's in daytime to 50's in evenings and even cooler during winter months), so bring some cooler weather clothes so that you don't miss out seeing the volcano at night. Also, bring a jacket or rain poncho so that you do not miss out on outdoor activities because of rain or random shower. We have electric heaters and heated mattress pads in the home, but Treehouse Cottage is best-heated by our large wood burning stove. If your stay will fall during December through February, and you are not sure about operating a wood stove or sensitive to cold climate, please reach out to me before booking or consider looking at our Fern Cottage, which is also in Volcano and has a gas stove for heating and is more insulated. We provide starters, kindling and wood to help you on the first night, especially if you are arriving later in the evening. There are stores in Volcano Village and in the National Park that have firewood and additional starters for sale. If you have any questions, please donʻt hesitate to reach out. We want you to have the best comfortable stay possible! We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner Treehouse Cottage for your next visit to the Big Island. If this property is unavailable, or if you're looking for more space for your party, consider taking a look at our other Volcano property (VRBO #1457205). Mahalo!

The property suited us perfectly- it had a cabin like feel with modern amenities. Clean, well presented, well stocked with dishes and basic supplies. Easy access to Volcano National Park. Very relaxing, we wished we could have stayed longer!
Excellent jungle experience! Used as a hub for Hilo/Volcano area day trips and it was perfect for what we wanted—an immersive more local vibe experience.
This was a truly peaceful little cabin near some great natural areas. It's as if someone took the north woods cabins that I'm used to and transformed it for a tropical locale. We would love to come again, as we barely scratched the surface of what this area has to offer.
We bought you a new can opener. Not a problem. We had everything we needed and the art is lovely. I really love all the windows! What a perfect house for the jungle!!
We loved this VRBO. It was fully equipped with everything you’d need, was homey, lived in, and comfortable. We loved the deck and its proximity to the park. Someday we will come back!!
The host was very welcoming. He let us know ahead of time the dryer was not working. When we had issues connecting to the WiFi he responded very quickly The house was clean. We enjoyed the different coffee making selections. The heating pad on the bed was a nice addition. Plenty of towels and beach towels.

Was surrounded by the perfume, smell of hibiscus and ginger flowers. Very private quiet location. Would go there again.
This is a charming, rustic "treehouse" nestled in the rain forest. The host was amazingly communicative and helpful. You can tell that the family actually spends time here as the kitchen has everything you meed to cook a real meal. We visited in December, and you do need to get that fire going and turn on the heaters ASAP. The bedroom area looked a little cramped in the photos, but it actually felt fine in person.
Staying here was truly a highlight of our trip to the Big Island. The windows and the deck are so peaceful. Listening to the rain in the morning and the frogs chirping at was lovely. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to use. Beds were very (queen mattress and a futon with springs) firm and pillows and linens were comfortable. The house had a bunch of little signs labeling light switches, the water heater pump, and more, which made acclimating to the space a smooth experience. Matt even has some QR codes to YouTube for how to work the wood stove (so amazing!) and the TV remote (which was still a bit too complicated for me!) A couple of things that we didn't anticipate, but are to note: . The roads in the neighborhood are very bumpy and narrow. It felt like a bit of an adventure just reaching the house! . Being remote and in the trees there are no window coverings. Which isn't a concern for privacy, but is if you like to sleep in. A sleeping mask would be perfect, but coming from Arizona, we were already naturally waking early due the the time difference. . Volcano is remote! We unfortunately had a bad battery in the Jeep we rented and it took 3.5 hours to find a tow truc to respond, even though we were about 23 miles to Hilo. Also very few taxi services and no ride shares would come get us. No reflection on the house, but be sure to have an emergency road plan outlined for a just in case situation! Overall we just loved it! Thank you for sharing your home!
The house was so beautiful, clean, organized, surrounded by trees, ferns and birds. Couldn’t have asked for more, the host thought of everything. Close to Volcano Nat’l Park. The best was we saw an eruption on our last night there!! Would definitely stay again.
We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.
Why they chose this property
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
What makes this property unique
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the park. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.
