The beach is directly across the street. After Labor Day, so is the quiet. That is the entire pitch for fall on Oak Island.

A two-bedroom cottage for couples, retirees, and remote workers traveling with up to two dogs, with a second room of twin bunks for gear, a friend, or whoever came along.

Fall here means shorter mornings on a wide empty beach, better sunsets, and parking at the access instead of circling for it. Free WiFi, a full kitchen, and a deck with dining and a grill for the nights you would rather not go out.

Honest about the weather: October swings between seventy-eight and sixty-four. Beach afternoons, sweatshirt evenings. We would rather tell you now than have you find out on day two.

What's happening while you're here

Live & Local runs Saturday evenings in October at Middleton Park, market from 4, music from 6. The Denver Nixion Band on the 3rd, The British Invaders on the 10th, The Cruise Brothers on the 24th. No concert on the 17th.

The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament takes over Southport and Oak Island October 1 through 3.

October 24 is the island's big Saturday. The Witches Ride rolls at noon, and the National Night Out Spooktacular brings a free fall market, costume contest, carnival games, and an outdoor concert that evening. Dogs are welcome at it.

And starting October 15, dogs come off leash on the beach strand through March 15. Town rules still apply.
