About the host
Hosted by Diana Nail
We are Diana and Donnie Nail, high school sweethearts who fell in love young and have now been happily married for nearly 44 years. We are blessed with two wonderful sons and five amazing grandchildren who bring so much joy to our lives.
Don retired after a long career in North Carolina Highway Safety, and Diana retired after 30 years as a teacher in North Carolina schools. After years of hard work and raising a family, we found ourselves drawn to the peaceful charm of Oak Island nearly 18 years ago, and it quickly became one of our favorite places to escape, relax, and reconnect.
We fell in love with Oak Island’s friendly atmosphere, beautiful coastal views, slower pace, and welcoming beach-town feel. Whether it’s watching sunsets over the water, spending time with family, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, this island has become very special to us.
Hosting gives us the opportunity to share a place we truly love with others. We feel incredibly grateful to open our home to guests and hope they experience the same peace, relaxation, and appreciation for God’s beautiful coastal creation that we do each time we visit.
Why they chose this property
We first fell in love with Oak Island while vacationing here years ago through a timeshare on 69th Street. We spent so many evenings riding bikes around the island, walking on the beach, and talking about how nice it would be to someday have a place of our own here. Over time, those conversations turned into prayers, and a few years later we bought a home on 68th Street and started enjoying island life whenever we could get away.
After Don retired, we began looking for something that could become a more permanent place for us to relax and spend time with family. This home actually wasn’t even officially listed yet when we found it, but it just felt meant to be. To us, it has become a place of rest, peace, and making memories with the people we love.
What we love most about Oak Island is the easygoing atmosphere and friendly people. We enjoy riding bikes all over the island using the sidewalks and paths, trying local restaurants, picking up fresh seafood, and visiting the small shops around town. There’s just something special about the slower pace here.
The sunsets over the canal and the ocean are some of our favorite moments, especially during the quieter months from September through March. After Diana retired, we added the saltwater pool because we knew we wanted this home to be a fun and relaxing place for both our family and our guests. We joked that the 401(k) ought to be good for something besides bills!
We truly enjoy sharing our home with others and hope guests feel as relaxed and at home here as we do.
What makes this property unique
What makes our property unique is that it offers several different parts of coastal living all in one place. Our home sits on the peaceful Davis Canal in Oak Island, but from parts of the property you can also catch views of the ocean across the marsh and between the charming beach homes nearby. It gives you the best of both worlds — quiet waterfront relaxation while still being close to the beach and island activities.
The canal side of the home is one of our favorite places to spend time. We regularly see herons, egrets, turtles, jumping fish, and occasionally even an alligator making its way through the water. The private dock is great for fishing, crabbing, or simply sitting with your morning coffee and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Catching fresh blue crabs right off the dock has become one of our family’s favorite island traditions.
Another feature that makes the property special is the large 40-foot saltwater pool. Some guests enjoy using it for lap swimming and exercise, while others love having a private place to relax and cool off after a day at the beach. Between the pool, screened porch, decks, dock, and large yard, there are so many places to spread out and enjoy your own little corner of the property.
Inside, the home feels bright and open thanks to the large picture windows overlooking the canal on both floors. With multiple living spaces, spacious bedrooms, and nearly three-quarters of an acre of waterfront property, the home offers a peaceful, uncrowded feel that can be hard to find at the beach.
What we love most is the quietness and privacy of the property. Even though you’re close to restaurants, shops, the beach, concerts, and island activities, the home still feels calm and tucked away — a place where you can truly slow down, relax, and enjoy the beauty of coastal life.
