Experience the Mt. Shasta area from an authentic 1942 Dunsmuir craftsman cottage, updated with modern comforts while intentionally preserving the character and charm of its original era.
This is not a brand-new luxury mountain home, and we don't want it to be. The cottage retains its rustic mountain character, including original cedar walls in the living space and bathroom, along with the quirks and craftsmanship you would expect from a home built more than 80 years ago. We've paired that history with thoughtful modern updates to create a comfortable and welcoming home base for exploring Northern California.
The completely renovated kitchen features chef-style appliances, cherry cabinetry, and teak flooring, making it equally comfortable for a weekend getaway or an extended stay. After a day on the mountain, river, or trails, come home to a cozy space that still feels distinctly Dunsmuir.
Your Mt. Shasta Basecamp
Think of it as a Tahoe-style mountain escape without the crowds. From the cottage, you're surrounded by some of Northern California's best outdoor recreation: hiking, skiing, mountain biking, fishing, waterfalls, alpine lakes, rivers, and the mystical beauty of Mt. Shasta.
The location puts you close to:
Upper Sacramento River: About a 10-minute walk to a secluded river beach Hedge Creek Falls: Approximately a 30-minute walk Mossbrae Falls: Nearby access to one of the area's most iconic waterfalls Historic Downtown Dunsmuir: About 1 mile south Mt. Shasta: About a 10-minute drive north to the alpine community and its restaurants, shops, and outdoor recreation Mt. Shasta Ski Park: About 15 minutes door-to-door Snowman's Hill: About 10 minutes for winter sledding Lake Siskiyou & Castle Crags: An easy drive for swimming, paddling, hiking, and exploring A Little About the Cottage
Part of the experience here is staying in a genuine 1942 mountain cottage. We've renovated where comfort and functionality matter while preserving the craftsman character that makes the house special.
Expect a comfortable, well-equipped and updated home, but also expect the personality, rustic finishes, and occasional imperfections of an 80+ year-old cottage. If you're looking for a newly constructed luxury cabin, this probably isn't the right fit. If you're looking for an inviting and authentic mountain home with modern amenities, history, and an exceptional location for exploring the Mt. Shasta region, we'd love to have you.
Come hike, ski, ride, fish, explore, or simply slow down and enjoy Dunsmuir from your own little piece of mountain history.

It's a cute and simple little cottage in a tiny rustic town. Decent kitchen, comfy beds, washer and dryer. The price was great and it was well equipped and comfortable. Our 3 year old loved it!

About the host
Hosted by Sam Ranier
We’re Sam and Ricky, Northern California locals who love the outdoors, traveling, skiing, hiking, motorcycles, gardening, and exploring everything our region has to offer. We’ve spent years enjoying the Mt. Shasta area and love sharing this special part of Northern California with others. As hosts, we want our Dunsmuir cottage to feel comfortable, welcoming, and authentic, a place where guests can settle in, explore the mountains, rivers, lakes, and trails, and experience why we love this area so much.
Why they chose this property
Our cottage sits in a quiet, historic Dunsmuir neighborhood surrounded by towering trees, mountain scenery, and the sounds of the Upper Sacramento River nearby. What we love most is how easy it is to step outside and start exploring. Walk to the river, Hedge Creek Falls, and Mossbrae Falls, or head into historic downtown Dunsmuir for local restaurants and shops. Mt. Shasta, Lake Siskiyou, Castle Crags, and Mt. Shasta Ski Park are all a short drive away. It’s a relaxed, authentic mountain community that makes a great basecamp for exploring everything the Mt. Shasta region has to offer.
What makes this property unique
What makes our cottage special is its combination of history, location, and modern comfort. Built in 1942, it’s an authentic Dunsmuir craftsman cottage, not a newly built luxury cabin. We’ve intentionally preserved its rustic character, including original cedar walls, while adding modern amenities such as a fully renovated kitchen with chef-style appliances, cherry cabinetry, and teak flooring.
The location is hard to beat. You can walk from the cottage to the Upper Sacramento River, Hedge Creek Falls, and Mossbrae Falls, while Mt. Shasta, Lake Siskiyou, Castle Crags, and Mt. Shasta Ski Park are just a short drive away. It’s a comfortable, character-filled basecamp for experiencing the Mt. Shasta region without the crowds of larger mountain destinations.
