Our family of 9 had an incredible week July 9-16, 2017 at the Maine House at Summah Rye at Bass Harbor and the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. This was the second of what we hope to be many biennial gatherings for our family, which included my wife and me, 5 adult children/son-in-law/boyfriend and granddaughters ages 3 and 1.
The property was spacious and provided seclusion, quite and solitude, just what we were looking for. We were greeted most mornings by does and fawns and enjoyed the views of the water and tides. The supply of kayaks, paddles and life vests provided gentle rides along the harbor. The little girls burned energy running throughout the yard and playing the wonderfully provided supply of games.
As for Maine House itself: wow, there are not enough superlatives to describe this roomy, comfortable, spacious home. It really did feel like home! Some of our favorite memories were simply being spread across the living and dining rooms, reading, painting, watching the little girls play, working on jigsaw puzzles and creating delicious meals. We could not believe how well stocked the house was, particularly the kitchen; we had everything you would need! Lots of info on area attractions. Great fireplace and supply of wood. We tried out the grill with lobster. The rooms provided nice privacy when we needed it, beds were comfy (we slept like logs!), bathrooms and showers worked great, lots of nice towels, washer and dryer were very handy.
The property is so close to all you would ever need: Gotts and the IGA were close by and were favorite stops for groceries and essentials. We felt like locals at Southwest Harbor and Somesville and got to enjoy the repertory theater (The Velveteen Rabbit), Strawberry Festival and Flamingo Festival and the parade! We visited the organic farm, pie stands, Echo Lake, Thurstons & Beals for lobster, an Island cruise and climbed Beech & Acadia Mountains, all only 5-10 minutes away.
When we needed very active venues, is was only 20 minutes or so to Bar Harbor, bikes and the carriage roads, Cadillac Mountain (a strenuous hike up and later in the week a beautiful sunrise), Jordan Pond and beautiful scenery.
This was my wife and my second trip to the quiet side and there is no question we will be back! We give Maine House and Summah Rye our highest recommendation; it is an exceptional property and would be perfect for family gatherings and reunions.
