About this property

Private Mountain Home w/ Incredible Views - 106 Acres, Hot Tub, Pool, Game Room

The Great Escape is a spectacular mountain property that was built for privacy, relaxation and the enjoyment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 106 private acres. Newly renovated with massive game room, expanded kitchen, and wrap around deck. In-ground private pool (30 x 14) available MAY 1st - SEPT 30 - no exceptions on dates. 4WD REQUIRED IN THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING.

The 5,200 square foot, three level cabin with 6 bedrooms, two of which are en suite master bedrooms is located at 3,900 feet at the center/top of a private mountain spanning 106 acres which boasts spectacular westward views of meadows, mountains, and valleys. There is a guest cabin 100 yards from the main house that can be rented for $125 per night. The guest cabin includes the 7th bedroom and 6th bathroom.

Newly added 35x25 game room has pool, poker and shuffleboard tables. It also has a 8-seat bar with beer fridge, freezer for cocktail glasses and mugs, dishwasher and sink. Wood stove.

There are four large TVs in the main house (family room, game room upstairs master, downstairs tv room) and one in the guest cabin, but we haven't put a TV in the other bedrooms primarily because we originally bought the house so our kids would watch less, not more TV.

30 minutes north of Boone, 20 minutes from Mountain City. Last half mile uphill on a private gravel driveway. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE REQUIRED IN WINTER AND EARLY SPRING (always check the weather). We have had guests attempt the driveway after a snow in two wheel drive and we end up having to ask our neighbors with 4WD for help :) We have had guests bring trailers with bikes/motorcycles up the driveway without any issues, however less experienced/skilled motorcycle riders might not be comfortable with the gravel/pitch of drive.

There are gas stations/convenience stores 5-10 minutes away, but the closest full service grocery stores are in Boone and Mountain City which are 30 and 20 mins, away respectively.

Key Amenities:
Main House: 6 bedrooms, 5 and 1/2 baths in main house. This includes two master bedrooms. The primary master has a fireplace and a private deck with view.

There are two upstairs bedrooms with queens that share a bathroom.

In addition there are two "kids" rooms on the lower level that share a bathroom. These bedrooms have two bunk beds in each, however there is a full size bottom bunk in each room if you need more room for adults.

High Speed WIFI and ROKU/Cable.
Sonos music in the dining room, living room, upstairs master, downstairs rec room, deck and pool/patio/hot tub area. Makes it easy to stream your favorite music.

Two large TV areas with L-shaped couches. The one on the lower level is perfect for kids. Additional TV in the upstairs master.

Large dining room table seats 16.

Guest Cabin: 1 bedroom, w bath, kitchenette and sitting room (rents for an additional $125 per night). The guest cabin is approximately 100 yards from the main house. Great for grandparents, adult children who appreciate a little quiet. We never rent the guest cabin separately, so you will have complete privacy if you don't end up renting the guest cabin also. Guest cabin has high speed wifi and a smart TV too.

The property is stunning and perfect for a family trip!

The views are incredible!! We went from sitting on the porch, to the fire pit overlooking the mountains! The kids loved playing in the large field, going to the fort on the property and walking down to the pond for fishing! The place was clean and gordie was amazing answering any questions we had!!!

Great for the whole family

Our families have vacationed at the Great Escape 3 times now, driving in from FL, MI and NY and we’re already planning a 4th trip. It gets better every time with the addition of a pool and now a game room. Even though it rained half the time we were there we had so much to do right at the cabin. When we got out we went white water rafting (45 mins away) and did a 4 mile hike at Elk Knob with the kids (20 mins away). We love the views and the fact that 6 adults and 5 kids can stay here comfortably with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms.

The Great Escape...Really is great!!

This was our first trip to the Great Escape, but will not be our last. The house is spacious, well-appointed and very private, and the views are amazing whether morning or evening. This is a wonderful place to get away and recharge your batteries, but is still close enough to enjoy everything the area has to offer. We will be back!

Truly a "Great Escape"

This is an amazing house on an amazing property! Owner and property manager were always quick to respond and were very friendly and helpful. The setting was incredible... beautiful sunsets, stars, clouds, hills and valleys! My grandchildren, children, my husband and I loved having so much to do on the property and the house provided room for all. Loved the separate "kid" space downstairs and the huge dining table was wonderful for our large group!

Fantastic Location and Property!

We had a total of 14 people in our group and truly enjoyed our stay from July 26th to Aug 5th, 2017. The pictures on the booking page do not do justice to the amount of space the house offers and the amazing views. The owner , Gordie was highly responsive to any issues and or questions we had. We never felt crowded and the 2 bunk rooms in the basement were perfect for the 6 kids. The newly renovated master suite was amazing as well. I would highly recommend this property to anyone considering a stay in the Boone. NC area. A+ RENTAL

Almost a 5 Star house

The view was AMAZING! The pictures don't do it justice! The pluses - Great support and response from Shane and Vince! Overall property was nice. Firewood provided and grill with extra propane tank, HUGE dining table, beautiful deck, and the audio system - especially at the pool was fantastic! The minuses - A mildew smell that permeated the house, some light fixtures didn't work, not as clean as it should be, some bedrooms didn't have TVs, and the biggest - Pool and hot tub people that were supposed to be there twice, never came at all. Overall, it was a great vacation spot and we had a wonderful time!

Amazing Property and Views!!!

First time traveling in large family group. Comfy and spacious! Kids has their own space. A little far from bigger towns, but driving a lot is expected in the mountains. Would love to visit in the summer in the future to enjoy more of the deck and outdoors. Washing machine broke and took a few days to repair, but was compensated for the trouble. Trash was also a slight issue. Filled up quickly with do many meals and large family. Maybe some extra trash cans or a mid week pick up would do the trick Overall awesome experience!

WOW... We LOVE Great Escape!!!

Visited with 2 families (4 adults and 8 kids). Rough conditions (cold and icy/snowy) hampered our travel out and about and could have served as an obstacle but instead allowed us to stay in, relax, and fully enjoy this winter wonderland. The kids were thrilled with the outside firepit, hot tub, foosball, basement TV/movie setup, and bunk beds. Adults loved the huge dining table, fireplace, upstairs TV and sound system, and perfectly appointed bed rooms. We played games, cooked/ate amazing meals, cheered on our favorite sports teams, played in the tree fort, hiked and slid down the hills, watched deer playing in the snow from the windows, and made life-long memories. Couldn't ask for more. Perfect weekend bonding with family and best friends. Thank you!!!

Amazing house. Amazing view. Amazing family trip.

The house was perfect! It fit our whole family of 11. The photos of the view don't do it justice. Every morning of our summer vacation was spent peacefully drinking coffee and taking in the scenery. It is truly isolated in the mountains and forests, but we found lots of fun things to do with a little driving like zip lining, white water rafting, and tubing down the river. But the time spent at the house was my favorite part: listening to music, sitting around the fire pit, hot tub, cooking and playing games together. It came well stocked with towels and sheets. The beds and rooms were comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with all sizes of pots and pans, silverware and dishes. The giant dining room table created the perfect spot to gather for family meals. This is a great place to unwind and disconnect. (Disconnect if you want, but there is wifi available!)

Awesome Great Escape

This property, The Great Escape, provided a wonderful retreat for our family. The host was especially cordial and responsive in all the communications prior to and during our stay. We especially enjoyed the pool and hot tub, explored parts of the property on several hiking trails, continually enjoyed the wonderful views of the (sometimes cloud filled) valleys. On several clear nights the star filled skies were very visible with no ambient light near us. The man who heads up maintenance and construction on the property was extremely responsive and gracious. He even plugged a punctured tire (so we could get off the mountain) and told us about the best tire places in the area. We had to climb a learning curve with some of the new appliances (are you familiar with induction stove tops?) and the many room AC units, but, again, found our host and maintenance guy extremely responsive whenever we asked for help. The dining room is awesome -- seats 14 and provides a glorious view of the valley and sunsets. We had all the amenities needed. Members of our "tribe" are sharing information about The Great Escape with friends and co-workers.

Amazing House. Perfect View

I stayed in this home for 4 night with 12 adults. The home was very nice and comfortable. The outdoor space and view was absolutely stunning! I could just sit on the porch and look at the view all day long. The hot tub and fire pit outside was very nice as well, and enjoyed hiking around the area. Tons of space with nobody around but a few cows in the far far distance. Entry into the home isn't too bad - gravel driveway uphill but well kept. The house was clean and well stocked. We did a lot of cooking at the kitchen wasnt too bad, although a bit smaller than I would like for a house this size. There at least was an extra standard fridge in the laundry room so that helped out quite a bit. The all-house sound system that you could control from your phone was a nice touch! The huge dining room table and nice large living area was perfect for a large group of friends hanging out. The only thing I wish had been different is the lack of window curtains in the living room and some bedrooms. This caused early morning rises that weren't always welcome as well as bad glare on the TV. I would absolutely choose this home again! Note: Sky Valley Zip Tours is a great thing to do in the area as well.

This property was amazing. It had beautiful views of the mountains. We were able to do lots of hiking on the property. The kitchen was very well stacked with everything we all needed for cooking. Very spacious for our large family. The game room was a big hit. Also, of course the pool the kids loved the best. The communication between Gordy and Tracey was fast if you needed anything. Wonderful Stay

We had a wonderful time at an incredible cabin with amazing views. We had a group of 14 of all ages plus 4 dogs. The dogs really enjoyed the outdoors with plenty of room to roam. The cabin was very well equipped and had plenty of room for our group. We were lucky enough to have a white Christmas during our stay which added to this beautiful property. We look forward to booking this cabin again. Maybe during warmer months when we can enjoy the pool and outdoor fire pit areas. The hosts were great and very responsive. Highly recommend this property.

Heaven on Earth

The Great Escape is everything it looks like in VRBO and more. The view alone is incredible. The house is clean, comfortable and the large and wonderful kitchen had every appliance and utensil you could want or need. We have stayed in vrbos in many locations and never have we stayed in one with a such a wonderful kitchen. The hot tub and pool were also great! This house was perfect for our family get together. Everyone had their own room and space which was perfect but then between the game room ( which we really enjoyed) the kitchen and the Den it was perfect for spending time together. We also enjoyed plenty of time on the deck and by the fire pit. We just kept saying over and over how much we all loved it and everything was perfect. We would definitely stay again! We miss it already

Amazing escape!

We had a wonderful time at the great escape! House was beautiful and clean. Loved the large kitchen with 2 dishwashers and 2 fridges. Plenty of dishes, utensils for all. Beds were comfortable. The new game room is already a nice place to hang out in even though not completely finished. The pool and hot tub was great. We saw several shooting stars while sitting around the fire pit. The views were amazing. Beautiful and peaceful property. Would definitely visit again!

Amazing Family Vacation

My family (including my husband, kids, my parents, siblings and all significant others, and my cousin) loved our stay here. It was big enough for everyone to be comfortable and have their own space. The two fridges and two dishwashers made it possible to cook and clean up after a large dinner for 14. There was plenty of space to hang out and the pool was perfect. The view was absolutely amazing. The owners were super responsive and helped out with anything we needed. We would absolutely recommend!

Great Stay

The house was great. They recently enlarged the kitchen, added an additional bath and are working to finish the gameroom. The construction mess was a little disappointing, however we viewed it as growing pains for amenity improvements. Once the game room is finished it will be awesome. It has a pool table, shuffleboard table, card table and a wet bar with massive high ceilings. We enjoyed the large kitchen and two refrigerators and as other has mentioned the views are out of this world. We loved watching the changing of the weather over the mountians. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool, pool table and shuffleboard table as well as exploring the grounds. The Boone area is just beautiful and the weather was a much welcomed relief from the summer heat we are used to. "The Great Escape"was just what this Texas family was looking for.

Peaceful! Tranquil! Loved It!

We are a 3 generation family that vacation together every summer. We chose this location due to the very large property, pool, hot tub and the spaciousness of the home itself. The pictures of the inside haven't been updated as yet...we were astonished upon entry as a extremely large room has been added (not quite finished yet) and will be awesome when completed. The kitchen has been enlarged and all new cabinets and appliances installed. I would have rated the cleanliness with 5 stars if the house cleaners hadn't missed a couple out-of-the-way spots but overall it was pristine. Our 3 teenage grandsons were hardly every around as they hiked the property and fished about 30 mins away daily. The beauty of the mountains, etc. made for a fantastic setting. We also rented the cabin on the property and I especially enjoyed sitting on the porch swing listening to the frogs! If you love nature and peacefulness you can't go wrong. The owner, Gordie was great to work with as well. Thank You Gordie!

Host profile image
We're a family of six with four kids who love the Great Escape - ages 18, 15, 12, and 9. We've always enjoyed the outdoors and the mountains. We rented the property in early 2014 and after a great weekend, decided to try to purchase it.

We renovated the main house and are adding three bedrooms and substantial living space in the spring of 2017.

As former military members, my wife and i are happy to offer an 5% discount to Active Duty Military personnel. We also offer returning guests an 5% discount off of list price.

Why they chose this property

Spectacular views and chance to escape the city. It's very private and quiet with no other houses in sight. We wanted to have a place where our tfour children could tramp around and explore while we could relax with extraordinary views.

What makes this property unique

Very, very quiet, and very very private. Our recent upgrades have transformed a great piece of mountain property into a premium mountain escape.

Plenty of room for several families. Two master bedrooms and four additional guest rooms. Huge dining room table that seats 14. Plenty of seating areas on first two floors.
