About this property

Paradise! Share our private peninsula & beach, vacation or year-round

August 2, 2025: Exciting news for September travelers! We now have September 6 through the morning of the 19th available. Contact us right away if you're interested in these dates. Priority will be given to travelers who would like to book the entire period.

Then, beginning with the weekend of Sept. 27-28, we are open for the late fall through winter seasons! October is still glorious leaf peeper season up here, and we'd love for you to come and enjoy the foliage.

GENERAL NOTE: We now give priority to longer-term visitors. But always ask about dates you may be interested in, including for a minimum stay of a week or two, in case there are quick changes in the schedule. We'll accommodate you if we can.

*** IMPORTANT ABOUT RATES: it's not possible to set up an accurate one-size-fits-all cost calculation for longer stays through the platform's standardized system--we've tried--so please ASK for details before you request a booking, and we'll be happy to give you a customized quote based on your dates! :)

SEND US INQUIRIES any time. Just please don't formally request dates till you've asked about availability and the actual cost for you. It hurts our standing in the rental platform if we decline booking requests.

REVIEWS: Since March 2020, we've mostly had long-term, private-booking renters, hence the slight age of most reviews here.

Now about that DESCRIPTION...

===============
Hello! Here at Fish Point we’re unique in welcoming not only summer and fall vacationers, but also year-round, for business travelers or medical personnel needing a longer stay, and people desiring artist-retreat rentals: writers, visual artists, and composers/songwriters. *

While we know some travelers look for a stand-alone house, this is not "just an apartment." As one happy guest remarked when he first walked in: "You have a palazzo [a palace] here!" We're highly respectful of our guests' needs for peace and privacy. Meanwhile, we're available for special needs, help in emergencies, the latest tips and advice about the area.

We call our rental business "THE 'GUST' HOUSE" for the sea winds that make things exciting!

Our home was built in 2002, on a 3-1/2 acre property with a fascinating early American naval-defense history. The house is right along quiet Fickett's Point Road, on the back side of Narraguagus Bay just minutes from Milbridge's center. It's a great road for scenic walks & biking. Cross the broad field behind our house, and you come first to a beautiful gazebo facing the bay (new in 2020), then to a footbridge leading to our own wooded peninsula, used only by our family and guests, which gives you 270-degree views of the ocean, bay, town, and spectacular sunsets across the water. Enjoy the sights from the gazebo, the trail, the benches, or take a meal out to the picnic table at the end of the Point! Sunsets are spectacular out there.

A set of stairs leads you down to the beach, one of the rare sand beaches on the Maine coast--along with the large boulders characteristic of the area. We're near the town marina, and kayak rentals are nearby.

We live in the adjoining house, which we've made sonically and visually private from the 1300 SF apartment. The rental apartment is all on the ground floor, with its own private entrances, garden, and a patio/terrace facing the water. The facility is handicap-accessible, with wide doorways and hall, and flooring of tile, wood and low-nap carpeting--smooth surfaces for walkers or wheelchairs.

Bedrooms are large for this part of Maine. One has a king bed and the other 2 have queen beds. The king BR has its own private ensuite bathroom with shower. The other two BR's share a bathroom with a large tiled shower. The fully appointed kitchen has excellent appliances, including dishwasher and high quality LP gas range/oven. And of course a lobster pot! The dining area adjoins the large living room, and the apartment has its own washer & dryer. Decor and furnishings are charming, restful--and unique, not off-the-rack.

Other amenities: Up-to-date flat-screen television with Spectrum TV, Roku with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc., plus internet music programs and other bundled services. (BYO Roku device if you have one.) Spectrum fiber-optic internet, blazing fast. Cell services work fine in our location. Small library, games for rainy days, etc.

Since acquiring this home in April 2014, we've been gradually restoring the lovely garden beds that surround the entire house. They combine native and wild plants with more formal plantings. The apartment has its own "secret garden" area, and private patio with a view across the fields and bay., and its own BBQ grill.

Though 2014 was our first year at Fish Point, we owned a vacation cottage in Milbridge from 2008-22, and have rented to travelers since 2009. We've gotten raves from our renters at both properties!

LOCATION, LOCATION: Guests often tell us how happy they are about our geographic location, too, since we're about equidistant from Mt. Desert Island (Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor) and the farthest-east coastal towns like Lubec and Eastport -- and Campobello Island! Do bring passports if you plan to visit Campobello, since it's Canadian. It's easy to make a day or half-day trip to these famous, fascinating vacation spots from our place.

We're just about an hour's drive from ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. The main part of the Park is on Mount Desert Island, about 50 minutes from us. But a less-known section, Schoodic Point, is just about 20 minutes away, and is quieter, fewer crowds, same breath-taking views. Schoodic Point, this part of Acadia that Mainers tend to frequent, also has a fine information and conference center and campground, and is near many art and craft studios.

* Our guests' vacation and retreat rental fees help to support the work of Sunrise County Arts Institute, the small Maine non-profit we founded in 2014 as a resource for quality music, theater, writing and visual arts activities in Milbridge and the DownEast/Acadia area.

You're right--we're not red squirrels. This fellow was caught on camera by one of our 2018 vacation guests who kindly shared some of his photos with us. (If you recall Rocky and Bullwinkle: yes, there are moose nearby too, though not right on our land.)

We're a husband and wife, seasoned vacation rental owner-operators, who have provided accommodations at our charming cape house across the bay to satisfied vacationers since 2009*, and at this property beginning in 2014. Now we live in this beautiful area full-time.

We began camping in Maine 20 years ago, working our way up the coast from York and Booth Bay till we discovered Acadia. In 2008, we bought a 3BR cape in Milbridge as a vacation home; renovated it; and fell in love with the beauty of the area, the community, and the neighborliness of DownEasters. (That property, VRBO 341321 -- titled All-Season Wonderland: Oceanfront Cape with spectacular views! -- is going on the market in 2021.)

In 2014, when we acquired Fish Point, we moved from NY's mid-Hudson Valley to live here full-time, and to open a small music & arts center for the area. We're a musician (singer, voice teacher, with a Bard B.A. and a Songwriting Master's from Berklee), and a retired IBM IT professional. We have over 20 years of DIY home renovation under our belts, too.

Why they chose this property

We knew this home for over a decade before it became ours; it was built by a good friend in the area.

This is an absolutely unique property, located so close to town, yet on a peaceful bayside road; 3.5 acres with its own oceanside nature preserve and a sand beach, so rare in Maine. In 2020 we built a gazebo, which we also share with guests! It truly is a paradise.

One feels in touch with the infinite here, in the most intimate way. Sunrises, dramatic cloud patterns and sunsets spread across the horizon. During the day, the water views go all the way out to sea; and there is the wooded Point, and sand beach, right here on the property. Eagles, hawks and ospreys circle high above, gulls soar, songbirds chatter in the trees closer by. Wildlife includes foxes and bobcats as well as more familiar animals. To go outdoors on a clear night is to be surrounded by a bowl of stars, that become brighter and more numerous the longer you look.

The 5,500 SF Cape Cod style house was built in 2002 as a dual-use facility: a private home, plus an attached, flexible, handicap-accessible apartment that's a completely independent living/rental unit. The house is conveniently close to the road for walking, biking, and winter access; while the broad field behind it has water views and the gazebo, and provides a scenic entry to the footbridge that leads to the serenity of the Point.

We run a small local arts institute, and are especially happy to welcome artists of all stripes who want to get away for Creativity Retreats.

What makes this property unique

For vacationers, businesspeople and traveling medical personnel, this is a special opportunity. Also, for stays of 28+ nights, if connected to your job, education or relocation to the area, you can be exempted from State sales tax. Ask us about this first!
- We welcome travel nurses and other essential medical personnel for their standard 13-week contract stays.
- Traveling business professionals also enjoy our facility.
- Artists and other creatives who want to get away for some real productivity are welcomed for Creativity Retreats of varying lengths.

One special writers' retreat period is the whole month of November each year, when we offer special National Novel Writers' Month (NaNoWriMo) arrangements for participating writers, including optional support events.

When we bought this property and were renovating the building, we installed sound barriers between our living/studio spaces and the apartment, to keep that unit a quiet space for guests. We're considerate about the scheduling of sound-producing activities.

We provide all guests with a several-page list of our own favorite attractions, eateries, shops, etc., in advance. Their opening times, services, etc., are more variable than may be listed, due to the coronavirus, so always check with the establishment.
