My husband and I took this trip to explore the southwest region of SD. The house was the perfect base for our day trips. It was convenient to all of the national parks and monuments that we wanted to visit and only two blocks off the main drag in Custer where the grocery stores and restaurant are located.
If you are looking to explore this are as we were, this VRBO is perfect!!
The property was just as described. It was great for us as a central place to see while we visited Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. And Custer is a nice little town to visit.
Fantastic location. Feels secluded but within walking distance to everything. Very cozy feel, clean, well maintained, and tastefully decorated. Lots of room to spread out. Nice extra touches. For example, the king bed has the most plush mattress plus a foam topper.
One thing of note, there is no hot tub on this property. I thought I was going crazy because we specifically booked this home because we thought it had a hot tub. We in no way think the owners are at fault. Seeing that a previous reviewer thought the same thing leads us to believe there was a glitch at one point in the VRBO filter.
There is also no DVD player and when I just looked for the property again it still lists that is has “TV/DVD” in the description. Didn’t matter to us as we never even turned on the tv, but thought it is worth mentioning to others.
Also, probably just user error but we could not figure out how to make pans sit flat on the stove burners.
We would gladly stay here again.
My wife and I chose this nice home in Custer and it was truley a great place to stay. All you could ask for and more. Very well organized and clean. We came to South Dakota for the 84th Sturgis bike rally. The home decor was awesome. Ammenities were as described. Having the garage to use for our Harley was a bonus. Very comfortable stay. Thank you to the owners the Snyder family. Highly recommend thus home!!
We stayed 5 nights and it worked out very well. We generally ate breakfast there, made a lunch to bring on our daily excursions and ate dinner out. The kitchen was very adequate for that but could use some updating. The living and dining area were spacious as were the bedrooms. Beds were comfortable.
It's kind of funny but between being on the go all day, a 2 hour time zone difference and the high altitude-we're use to just about sea level in Florida--we were in bed at about 7pm. It was so quiet in the neighborhood that we never heard anything.
The only problem I could see would be if you had young children. The stairs are right outside of the 2 bedrooms.
We ate at the Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company twice and it was very good. They close every night at 9 and had entertainment the Saturday night that we were there.
Enjoyed our stay. No cable and only 4 PBS channels to choose from. Listing mentioned DVD player and there wasn’t one. When we booked our stay, house also listed hot tub and there was no hot tub
We had an excellent stay here. The house is in a perfect location in the cute town of Custer. And it was a great launching pad for all sorts of activities in the Black Hills. The house was very clean, very cozy, and communication with the owners was simple & timely. Icing on the cake was watching the deer from the driveway in the evenings.
We enjoyed the house. The rooms and beds are very comfortable. The living room is not very welcoming and we could only get 1 channel on the TV. We found the silverware was dirty & needed washing. Everything else was clean. The front yard is lovely. Some chairs to sit out front would be a nice addition.
This property was a great base for touring around the Custer area. The outside area was wonderful, with deer visiting the garden every day. It is located in a quiet area but very close to walk into Custer. We had everything we needed for a 5 day stay. We didn't cook so cannot comment on the kitchen facilities, it would be a good addition to have a kettle so we could enjoy our cafetiere of coffee in the morning without having to boil water in a pan. A small point. Otherwise very much enjoyed our stay in this property.
Extremely clean, and well kept home. Very peaceful setting, and a wonderful place to come back to at the end of the day. Deer resting in the yard, and wandering in the neighborhood. Walking distance to downtown Custer. Perfect place for a weekend, or a longer stay!
Was quit surprised on the location up on a hill, a little hard to locate at first. Very quite location, nice yard. the home was very clean. Had all the cooking essentials that you ever needed. Beds were very conformable & clean linen. One draw back was the the TV. It only had 5 Stations. And we could not connect our smart phones to the TV. It was not a Smart TV.. So we went without. The girls were a little put out. But they had to deal with it. Its vacation time. would go back again. Over all rating 9 out of 10. Owner was very helpful regarding the TV situation and was willing to help out to her best.to make it better for our stay. Thanks Lennor
The property is ideally situated being within walking distance of the town and an easy drive to the attractions in the area.
The garden area is lovely and we were fortunate to see deer and turkeys wandering about.
The kitchen is quite basic and in our view in need of an update.
A number of previous reviews have mentioned how a dishwasher, washer/ dryer would be beneficial especially when people are staying for a longer duration. We would be inclined to agree.
As the property is listed as accommodating up to seven people we feel that there needs to be more storage for clothing. More clothes hangers are definitely required. We lived out of suitcases for a week.
Although the property was lacking in certain areas we did not let this deter us from having a wonderful time in the Blackhills. After all the house is purely a base. The adventures, outside of it, are the most important to us!
This home could not have been more conveniently located. Exceptionally clean and comfortable.

My husband works in the area and I am a stay at home mom raising our five children. I enjoy spending time in Custer State Park hiking with my family, riding bike on the Mickelson Trail, and the quiet peacefulness the area has to offer. There is so much to do and see regardless of your interests.
Why they chose this property
We purchased the property to have a home away from home for our five children. We currently live in the Custer area and wanted a home in town to accommodate school activities. The property has the appeal of being in a country setting but only a few blocks from downtown Custer.
What makes this property unique
The cabin like appeal. The knotty pine and hard wood floors throughout the house made us feel right at home. The yard is also fairly private with a lot of mature trees offering shade. Deer frequent the yard quite often.
