Fantastic House with a fantastic view

Great house to rent. Amazing views, outdoor eating space and great communal space inside. Big pool and lots of Garden. Really nice restaurant 5 minutes walk away. Enrico the owner does a great job of ensuring you have fantastic holiday. He cooked for us and arranged to take us out at the end of the holiday to show us some of his favourite places. He really made this trip special. Loads of places to see close by. I can heartily recommend.

Rustic charm and stunning views

The property is typically Tuscan - stone built under a tiled roof - and features a double-height lounge on the first floor. The bedrooms are adequately sized and the showers functional, if quirky! The kitchen is quite dark and has an enormous slate-topped table, stone sink, modern hob/oven, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and fridge. Most of the crockery is random 2s and 4s but fully functional. Outside there is a large covered eating area - with a second fridge, useful for beers! - looking out onto the unheated pool only a few metres away and then out across the amazing views to the Appenines beyond.

Dear Nicholas, Thank you for your 5* review. I have passed on your feedback to Enrico the owner who said he will replace the crockery. It's really nice to hear you enjoyed the fabulous views of the mountains from the house and pool. It is really one of a kind. I would be delighted to invite you back to Tuscany one day and can offer you a returners discount on one of our houses. Please keep in touch! Kind regards, Susan Friends of Tuscany Ltd

Great holidays

We have had really great holidays in Monte Rotondo. The villa is typical, with lot of space. The first time we used the showers it was a bit disappointing, but it was in fact very convenient. The bedrooms are perhaps a bit small, but we have spent 99% of the time outside, so no trouble with this! The view is just incredible, and the swimming pool is very big! Enrico, Stefano and Giovanella, who have welcome us, are very friendly and always there if you need anything! When arrived, we have had the really good surprise to find lots of drinks, food, fruits... it's was really very cool! To summarize: really good holidays, in a very nice place, very quiet... we will be back for sure! Thanks once again to Stefano & Gio for all they made for us! :)

Fine Holiday Home in beautiful area

We had a great time in this excellent holiday home. We arrived to a fine welcome pack of bread, cheese, fruit, milk and wine from the kind owner, Enrico. It was a warm day so we all immediately dived into the pool, a very big pool which was well used during our holiday. The house was well equipped and spacious, although the bedrooms were small. The garden is very peaceful, with plenty of space for kids to run and explore, so different from the city. I enjoyed walking down to the local town Castelnuovo, which had a good market and loads of cafes. There are excellent wine shops in town, and there seemed to be a lot of events on. My favourite place to visit was Barga, a little farther on, which is a town we visited some evenings for the music festival and market under the stars. We also took a train to Lucca, a fabulous town, and one day picnicked in a old castle in the mountains…we were the only people there, brilliant! We also enjoyed a couple of delicious surprisingly inexpensive meals at the local restaurant, which is highly recommended. We would love to go back sometime soon.

Rustic and make sure you review location.

Stayed two weeks at Monte Rotondo in September 2022. The converted barn is lovely from the outside, with stunning views over the mountains. Castelnuovo is a nice town to visit with several good restaurants, though it's not safely walkable in the dark. The pool is large and the undercover patio has a table suitable for big parties. Due to our late arrival, we couldn't find a restaurant or shop open to get dinner, but owner Enrico went out of his way at 10:30 at night to find pizza and beer for us, he was also happy to wait for payment until we'd picked up Euros. Inside, the kitchen contains an enormous table, suitable for food preparation and seating for large groups. We enjoyed trips to Bargo and Sassi and there are many hikes with spectacular mountain views in the area. With its many positives, this property does have some drawbacks. Indoor décor is in need of attention, with damp patches on walls and the tile flooring is worn and mildewed in the bathrooms. Most bedrooms are much darker than the photos depict as windows face constant shade. The stairs are very steep and narrow. Be mindful due to the altitude it can can get cold in September bring some warm clothes. The pool pump broke and though a technician arrived promptly, he was unable to repair it which made the pool unusable for the second week. If you intend visiting Cinque Terre beware it is a 2 hour journey each way over difficult mountain roads. We relocated to Levanto for a couple of days to better see Portofino and Cinque Terre. On our return, the hot water wasn't working and a water pump constantly cycled on and off all night. Again, a technician arrived promptly but it was still a long night without hot water for showers etc. Families with young children may consider the steep stairs an issue. A long hard season had left the property in need of a spring clean and basic maintenance. The owners responded promptly to our issues which was helpful.

Dear Stephen, Thank you for your comprehensive review. It sounds like Enrico made you feel at home at the villa and that you enjoyed the spacious outdoor and indoor dining area as well as the great location. The villa is perfect for summer holidays as it is cool during the summer months due to the position of the bedrooms. Unfortunately, during your stay, which was at the end of the season, you experienced some colder weather, which would have affected the temperature within the villa. I have passed your comments on to the owner who will be carrying out comprehensive renovations to the property for the new season to bring it back up to the usual standard. I am sorry you experienced problems with the pool pump and hot water during your stay; with the renovations, these issues will be fixed. If you would like to come back to Tuscany, I would be happy to offer you a returners discount at one of the properties that we manage. Kind regards, Molly

Gern wieder !

Rustic charm with a phenomenal view

We were two families of three and four and stayed for a week. The property is roomy and easily accommodated all of us. There is a very large covered terrace where most of our time was spent. It overlooks the large pool which we enjoyed all week long and which the owner comes once every two days to clean. The owners were very responsive and kind....I can happily recommend this property.

A fantastic stay in the mountains

We booked last minute, on a whim, based purely on the photo of the pool with the view of the mountains. What a lucky find! We cannot reccomend it enough. The property and location were even better than the photos suggest. What an amazing way to relax, sat by the pool or floating on the water with such a view down the valley and across to stunning hills and mountains. Inside, the converted building is clean, bright with spacious ground floor kitchen/dining area and huge upstairs living area. However we spent all our waking hours outside by the pool or under shade at the huge outdoor table. It makes a great impression when all the little things you don't want to buy for a week away are supplied like washing liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing machine powder and lots of loo roll! Enrico, the charismatic owner, stealthly ensured the pool is clean each morning before woke and surprised us with little food gifts every so often. He was proud of his property and wanted guests to have the best time possible. Thank you for the welcome pack of food and drink as well. If it helps others booking, the house is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from Pisa airport via Lucca, which is 45 minjutes from the house. The road by the house couldn't be classed as busy, you'll hear the odd honking of Italian drivers at the blind bends but the area I would call quiet and restful. We booked a rental car via the link the owner provided after booking. The price was as good as the cheapest we could find elsewhere but via their link, additional drivers were much cheaper, so worked out well. We went early August, I was worried it would be too cool in the mountains but the weather was clear and very hot. The small town in the valley is 5 minutes drive away and pleasant enough. The little supermarket has almost everything you need and friendly staff to help hapless English tourists. Coffee and croissant breakfasts are cheap and good at various pavement cafes. We chose to eat out at various tiny medievel villages in the area rather than the town for more of an atmosphere. The owner leaves a good list of where to go. One exceptional place is just 4 minutes walk from the property. The pasta with wild boar and the hazelnut ice-cream are out of this world. Again, everyone in this area is very friendly to people who can't speak Italian. It's an area of very few tourists, which is a good thing. All in all - a great property and location.

Jederzeit wieder!!!!!

Excellent! Nice house with lovely pool

The villa was perfect for us. It is well equipped with a great pool and outside eating area. The pool has a fantastic view. It's 20 minutes walk into town where there are many cafe bars and restaurants and a good market. The restaurant Bonninis is so close we ate there several times. Sehr schöne Lage mit beeindruckender Aussicht. Etwas rustikal.

Mooie locatie, huis niet up to date

Bedden blijken niet allemaal even comfortabel. WIFI is moeizaam.

Had a great holiday at this villa. The owners were very good at communicating on our arrival.A car is essential as the walk back is too steep although you can taxi back for €15.The nearest restaurant which is quoted in other reviews is poor. One member of staff was very rude and made it obvious that she didn't like the British..The only critisism is that the garden furniture needs replacing as it's quite old now.Lucca is a delight,as is Barga with some good restaurants.Tritti is the best restaurant in Castelnuovo ,and the local supermarket is good. All in all a very relaxing holiday .

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We appreciate your feedback. That is unfortunate regarding the restaurant Bonini's as we have only ever had very positive experiences and feedback about it. I have informed the owner regarding the furniture and he is looking to add new furniture it as soon as possible. We love this area of Tuscany, and this house is situated in an excellent location, nearby Castelnuovo and Barga. The area is also known for its many fantastic and cheap restaurants and I am glad you got to try out a few. If you wish to return to Tuscany please do get in touch as we manage many houses in this area and further south. We also offer a Friends of Tuscany discount to all our returning guests. Best Wishes, Friends of Tuscany.

Absolutely stunning location and pool area, disappointed with the villa.

We had a wonderful holiday with family at Monte Rotondo, the location of the villa, and the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. The pool and outside space is lovely, with nice comfy sun loungers, and the view takes your breath away. An umbrella for some shade would have been nice though. Upon arrival, the villa felt like it hadn't been stayed in for a while - although the bedding/towels were clean, the floors needed sweeping, there were dead flies on windowsills etc. The owner/ management company were very helpful and visited to see if everything was OK, and immediately fixed a problem with one of the toilets. Although a TV and hairdryer are listed as facilities at the villa, they were not there when we arrived, the owner did ensure these were provided a few days later (he let himself in while we were out and left the items for us - leaving the front door wide open when he left......)however, we did have to ask for these items even though they are listed as being provided. The villa itself is well equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine etc, however we found the villa to be quite basic inside. Although all the bedrooms are en suite the bathrooms can only be described as functional, the shower is just a drain in the floor and the water goes everywhere. The two downstairs bedrooms are quite dingy and smelled musty. The double room had nowhere to hang clothes up either. A lot of the furniture is very basic - in the room my daughter slept in, the bed had had the slats removed and a camp bed placed inside the frame! We just felt that for the cost of the villa, it could have been equipped to a better standard. Having said this, the lounge is a lovely room with a nice veranda. The town of Castelnuovo do Garfagnana is pretty with a few nice restaurants, however we were under the impression it is walkable from the villa, but it is a long walk down (and back up) a very steep hill to the town. We would have appreciated a bit more info about supermarkets and where to get provisions, the one in town had very random opening times! We did have a fab time though - having the pool was lovely and the area is stunning - Lucca is a must see.

Thank you for the review. It's very useful to hear of your experience. I'm disappointed that there were some things about the villa which seemed not quite right. You were the first people to stay there since the previous summer. I was in the villa 2 days before you arrived. It was very clean and all the upstairs windows were open for fresh air, but being cleaned and ready for you a few days before your arrival was maybe the reason why some flies appeared on the window sills. The type of shower you mention is common in Tuscany. However I have asked the owner to change the design during the refurbishment for 2018 The lounge is indeed lovely and the large tables in the kitchen and under the shaded patio are excellent. The centre of town is 1.8 kms from the villa and most people do walk. Also of great benefit is the restaurant only 5 minutes walk...it's one of the best in the area. You will have received our comprehensive information about local attractions, must visit places, and restaurants. Usually in Tuscany shops open very early in the morning and close from 1-4pm, then open until 7pm. Tuscany is pleasantly old fashioned in many ways, including the tradition that all shops have a midweek closing day. We hope you return soon. Please contact us for advice and remenber there is a returners discount.
