The Monti district in Rome is the district of art galleries and wineries.
After a long phase of urban redevelopment, it is now the mecca of all young tourists traveling to the capital. It borders with the Rome of the Imperial Forums and the Esquilino district. A few steps from the district there are the magnificent basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore with the characteristic cosmatesque floor and that of San Pietro in Vincoli which houses the famous Moses by Michelangelo.
Between two large road arteries, Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, it contains the Suburra, the ancient "Sub Urbe" district - under the city -, whose basements emerge from the Colosseum. Its rough streets are made of cobblestones, and its alleys at night are breathtakingly beautiful. And the whole neighborhood revolves around the square of Madonna dei Monti, with the characteristic Fontana dei Catecumeni designed by the architect Giacomo della Porta which is the main meeting place for both inhabitants and tourists.
