About this property

Remodeled 1858 Historic downtown home that was once part of the Alamo RanchLand.

LOCATION
Cooler weather is on its way. The StoneHaus cottage with its quaint shaded back yard is easy access for a walk to the Alamo and downtown. Morning coffee on the front porch is relaxing and an evening glass of wine on the backyard garden is soothing and delightful.

This historic family-friendly private home includes free gated parking. Other area attractions in close proximity include the San Antonio Riverwalk, Scottish Rite Center, Tobin Center, The Majestic Theater, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Sunset Station, Hemisfair Plaza, and the Alamodome. The Pearl district (an amazing bevy of walkable stores, restaurants, and entertainment) is within a short drive.

HISTORY
Known as the Engelmann-Muench House, this cottage was built in 1858 by Martin Engelmann, a wealthy German immigrant. The caliche block vernacular double house sits on a site which was once part of the Alamo farmlands. The structure is a good example of a once-common San Antonio house type and features original built-in end chimneys.

If you explore the neighborhood, you will find a new bar scene developing with Road Map Brewery, La Roca, Bentley's, and more. Of course, restaurants and food trucks are in close walking distance on North Alamo, Houston St and the Riverwalk. Made Ready and Idlewild Hall are our newest food/drink stops to try as well. Don't forget to sign up for a ghost tour. There are several options from which to choose....Sisters Grimm is my favorite.

It's a unique place. I have rented dozens of VRBO rentals. This one is different given its history but it's a perfect place to stay if you want a few days or a week to visit San antonio. You can easily walk to virtually everything the downtown San Antonio offers to include hemisphere Plaza the Riverwalk etc. In the meantime you're staying in history. We enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings with a glass of wine. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for couples or a small family. Within a short walk there is some place to get a morning coffee that doubles as a microbrewery if you enjoy having a beer in the afternoon. ( or in the morning as they offer that also. Lol.)

Lovely historic home in heart of San Antonio

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely historic home in San Antonio. We were able to walk to downtown easily (about 10-15 min) and hit all the tourist stops and the Riverwalk area. The hosts were excellent and the home was well equipped with everything you need for a weeklong stay.

Cute House close to Downtown

It was a nice house to stay in. It is very conveniently located and within walking distance to the Alamo. The owners were easy to work with and there wasn't any problems. We had breakfast tacos at the Oasis which is right next door. Has great reviews!

The cottage was beautiful! The decor was very inviting and the yard was very pretty.

We would stay here again if we passed this way (which I hope to do). We loved the history of the cottage especially after our visit to the Alamo. We walked to the Riverwalk and nearby restaurants. It was a great trip and we thoroughly enjoyed being at the cottage. The owners were very welcoming and helpful during our stay. San Antonio is a beautiful city with great food! Thank you for making your cottage available!

Long Weekend from HOU

We had a great weekend. The property is maintained well and is in good order. The property managers provided all the necessary details to access the house and useful supplemental info about the surrounding area. This accommodating historic home has plenty of character which certainly adds to the SATX experience. Thank you for a comfortable, unique and memorable stay.

Hidden Jewel

My family and I absolutely loved our stay at The Stonehaus during the week of Thanksgiving. Barry and Mona’s historic home is truly a hidden gem in downtown San Antonio. Check in was a breeze and the property was exactly as described and presented. I will miss having my morning coffee in the beautiful courtyard out back. The property is gated, a nice amenity for being downtown in the 7 largest city in the US. And we always felt safe! We were unsure of how far a walk it was to everything so we paid to park the first night...waste of money because the Alamo is just 4 blocks and the the the Riverwalk is right across the street after passing through a hotel. So close to all the action with the luxury of staying in place that felt like home. We would definitely stay here again. J. Dooling and Family

Beautiful historic house

We really enjoyed our stay here. I have 2 teen age boys and they brought one of their friends and we had plenty of room for us all. The beds were very comfortable and the house is beautifully remodeled. Great location for walking to river walk and Alamo and other attractions. Also good location for going to Fiesta Texas. We had breakfast two mornings at The Oasis Mexican Cafe which is right out the back door and the food and service was awesome. The owners checked in with us to make sure we made it in okay and asked us to let them know if we needed anything. They even left us a bottle of wine when we arrived which we thought was a very nice touch. The book at the house tells all about the history of his 1800 home and even has pictures which was very interesting. The gate around house and parking adds to your comfort in leaving your vehicle even though we never felt unsafe it was just extra security and comfort. We definitely recommend and will have to visit again.

Great house! Great location! Quiet at night.

How cool it was to stay in an historic house. We loved how the original bones of the home are still there. First off the location was excellent. About an 8 minute walk to the Alamo. You can access the more touristy part of the river walk right by the Alamo, or if you want a quieter walk go down about 2 blocks the other way right past Pete's Tako's (good food too!). Right past there is one of the dam/locks and if you keep walking that way you hit the Pearl area. Go on a weekend morning and you can hit the Farmer's market. Food, so awesome. Stay right by the house and walk to Augie's BBQ. SO GOOD! We ate there 2 times in just 4 days. Really good value, lots of food for great price. Then right across the parking lot behind the house is a little mexican cafe. Grab the breakfast tacos and bring them back to the house to eat. Besides the Alamo and missions, we really enjoyed the Briscoe Western Art Museum. There were 4 of us and plenty of room. One bathroom meant a little negotiating times to get ready but we made it work. Always felt safe, and we once we pulled in the gated lot and hit the local grocery store we never even used the car until the day before we left. Walk to everything. Good house for a small family, friend get away, even a romantic trip. Nice and quiet at night since you a few blocks from all the hub-bub.

Adorable Hacienda safe and convenient to downtown

We thoroughly loved our stay at StoneHaus. The history of the building was so interesting and the hosts gave us all the information we needed to have a fantastic trip, plus a bonus bottle of wine! Beds were comfortable, plenty of storage to unpack our suitcases for a long weekend, and Roku on the TV helped us decompress after some long hikes and shopping days on the riverwalk. Gated parking added a layer of security for the area as some homeless folks seek shelter in nearby churches, but at no time did that affect our experience or safety on the trip. Would consider staying here everytime we come back to visit with friends or our families.

Lovely house in convenient location

We came to San Antonio for a wedding, and I'm so glad we picked this house. It was very cute and well-kept! I also appreciated the gate surrounding the house. The neighborhood was quiet (aside from some car sounds), but it was nice to know nobody else could get into the property area. (We had some issues with gate codes, but the host leaves a remote control for opening the back gate just in case). Since there's really just one bedroom, there isn't a ton of privacy (there's a daybed with two twin mattresses in a small room, and two queen beds in a larger attached room), but it was a great spot to stay with family. We were able to walk downtown quickly, and my partner and I - both vegetarian - loved Plantaqueria, which was just a couple of blocks away. Thanks, Mona and Barry!

Beautiful piece of history

StoneHaus was one of the most beautiful homes I've rented, it's a true slice of history! The house was spotless, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed during our stay. It was a short walk to both the Alamo and the Riverwalk. We saw a few homeless people in the area but it wasn't any different than what you'd see in any other city. I was visiting with my daughter and 2 young grandchildren (2&3), we felt comfortable walking to/from the downtown area. StoneHaus is completely fenced in with security gates which made us feel very safe at night. The host was friendly and responsive. I highly recommend staying at StoneHaus!

Neighborhood

The house was nice. The neighborhood was surrounded by homeless. I thought we could walk to the river walk seeing it is less than a mile but I was unwilling to take my family through the homeless encampments.

Great spot, interesting history

It's not often that you get to get to stay in a 19th century home. They did a great job restoring it and the proximity to the riverwalk and the alamo is the real win. We felt safe in this one story house, despite the high number of vagrants in downtown. It was a great stay and easy to corral the young kids.
