About this property

Charming period thatched cottage - close to beach & coast path.

The Quillett is a wonderful 350 year old traditional thatched cottage, just a mile from South Milton National Trust Beach. The cottage is perfectly situated to explore this idyllic rural area of the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Fully renovated, but in keeping with its heritage, its a very comfortable cottage for relaxing holiday by the sea.
Steps lead up to the large traditional door, into the spacious lounge with a large inglenook fireplace. The lounge has two double sofas, an arm chair, dining table and chairs, 42 inch Smart TV, blue--tooth stereo and DVD. A few steps down from the lounge is a well-equipped farmhouse style kitchen with a small breakfast table and chairs, which looks out to the front of the cottage. Steps lead out of the lounge, to a sunny patio area with seating and continue up through the pretty winding cottage garden to a second secluded patio area with dining table and chairs to catch the evening sun. There is off-road parking area at the back of the property accessed via a private lane.

The bathroom is half way up the stairs, and includes a roll top bath and a separate shower unit. Further upstairs, there is a good size main bedroom with a king size bed and plenty of storage. The cosy second bedroom has twin single beds with a built in wardrobe and drawers. Both bedrooms look out on to pretty garden areas. Our bedrooms are in the alcoves of the cottage with sloping ceilings.

The property includes electric radiators in addition to a wonderful large wood-burning stove. Bed linen and towels are included in the rental, along with a complementary basket of logs for the fire in the winter season. The cottage is strictly no smoking and sorry, we do not take pets.

CAUTION: We have a lot of steps & an awkward staircase so it is not suitable for those with walking difficulties

South Milton village is a traditional village with a beautiful old church and village hall. The local National Trust beach is a delightful family beach , famous for Thurlestone Rock and walking distance from the house. The village is equi-distant between Kingsbridge , a bustling market town, set on the beautiful river estuary and Salcombe, with its beaches and prime coastal position. The famous surfing beach of Bantham is only 2-3 miles along the coast with Agatha Christie's Burgh island within sight.

This area of South Devon is loved for its rugged cliffs, sandy coves, peaceful countryside, pretty villages, rolling hills, secretive estuaries and dark night skies.
The South-West coast path is at its most beautiful here. There are lovely walks each way on the coast path from the cottage itself. We especially like Hope Cove - a lovely fisherman's cove with great eateries and spectacular views as well as the winding coast path round to Bantham surf beach via Thurlestone , overlooking the river estuary and Burgh island.

There is lots to do in the area from visits to naval historical towns Dartmouth & Plymouth to delightful Totnes. There are lots of activities for children on the doorstep as well as further afield. And last , but not least , a plethora of pubs, cafes and restaurants to frequent!

CAUTION : The cottage has a lot of steps inside and out , with a windy staircase which has a rope hand-hold - it is not suitable for anyone unsteady on their feet.

Flexible changeover days and short breaks are available!

Electric car charge available at the cottage - charged at weekly flat rate, added convenience in an area very short on charger points!

Great base to explore south Devon

Lovely little cottage in south milton. It was just myself and my wife and the cottage was perfect. It is in a lovely setting and the open plan lounge with fire place was a great place to chill after days out exploring.

This was our base for walking the last leg of the SW Coastal path from Dartmouth to Plymouth. It was perfect. Recommend the Hope and Anchor in Hope cove. Averil was a superb host.

A beautiful, clean, comfortable cottage in a great location. The cottage is full of character, but tastefully furnished & decorated to feel up-to-date. The kitchen had everything we needed, beds were comfortable and the shower was great. The hosts were really helpful when we first arrived and had a small problem with the heating that was easily resolved. The location is great for exploring south Devon. Highly recommended.

Lovely Property

We loved staying in a roomy Thatched Cottage. The cottage is comfortable and roomy but not too big. Just big enough. The kitchen had everything we needed including doing some laundry. Its on a busy road but the cars driving by were not very frequent. If you are a foreigner like myself prepare yourself for the single lane country roads that have a high speed limit, you need nerves of steel if you are not use to it!

Quaint, quirky and comfy.

The Quillet was just as described and had everything we needed for a an11 night stay. Communication from first booking to leaving the cottage was excellent. A minor snag was immediately dealt with by the neighbour via owner. With had no issues with parking car ( largish SUV) at property We were aware of the steps and stairs, good mobility is needed but as a fit couple in our late 70’s we had no problem. The stairs were ‘interesting’ The cottage is in a beautiful area, with wonderful coastal path walks with many small and pretty bays. We were impressed with Dartmouth and further afield, Plymouth A different style of driving is needed on the narrow country lanes Parking in NT and other car parks is a challenge. Some wanted cash only ( no change ), others card only and others phone only. All in all a very enjoyable stay and excellent weather as a bonus. Thank you

A cosy escape

The cottage was a perfect short xmas escape, and is well equipped for staying warm in front of the fire and the kitchen well-fitted even for a Christmas dinner. The roll-top bath was luxurious and the bed super-comfy. Driving the country lanes required a bit of patience in the dark winter days but there was plenty of lovely places to visit in the local area.

Lovely property, very comfortable and everything we needed. Just a couple of points to note. One of the small glasses was cracked so I put in the bin, The coffee machine leaks water when left after use, so needs emptying after use. Hairdryer cuts out after a short while of use.

Enjoyed my stay

The property looks lovely from the outside. I know its an old property and its probably because I'm scared stupid but there was a lot of spider webs around the cottage. But I have to say we had a great stay really enjoyed ourselves. Just a pity there isnt a pub in the village.

About the host

Host profile image
We are based in Poole and keen sailors. We originally got to know South Devon on several sailing holidays as well as enjoyed renting properties with friends over the New Year in the area. We bought The Quillett in 2016 and spent a happy year renovating the cottage whilst exploring the area which we have come to love even more. The coast is stunning and there is so much to do in the area. We continue to share the use of the cottage between holiday guests & our family.

Why they chose this property

The Quillett, is a 350 year old cottage with loads of character. We love the history of the place , it's inglenook fireplace and large spacious lounge. The village is very quiet, despite its proximity to many tourist areas.
The coast path both ways from the cottage is stunning . There are wonderful circular walks to take in the coastal beauty and include a pub or two along the way!
This area is superb all year round. With national trust properties and walks, lots of tourist attractions as well as outdoor life.

What makes this property unique

Spring & Autumn is for walking, enjoying the local craft fairs, villages and sights without the crowds and sampling great food and drink along the way. Devon is open all year round so lots to do and see.
Enjoy all the regular summer festivals and regattas, superb pubs and restaurants and peace and quiet of rural life.
South Milton itself is a tranquil village just a mile from a stunning beach. Wander the village, visit the church and enjoy meeting the locals at the monthly village "pub" event!
