About this property

Lake Fanny Hooe Resort - 2 bed with Balcony B by RedAwning

You are now breathing the purest, most vitalizing air on Earth. These are the words that adorn the sign that is on the deck of the Harbor Haus restaurant that looks out on Lake Superior from the shore of historic Copper Harbor MI. If you ask the thousands of people who make their way to the end of the Keweenaw Peninsula at the very northern tip of Michigans UP each year to take part in the abundance of outdoor activities available in the area they would most likely agree with those words. Whether it is mountain biking, kayaking, skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, ATV riding or just relaxing there is something for everyone who wants to get away from the modern world and step into a more simple time and place.

This resort property is located in the heart of Copper Harbor. Situated on the banks of Lake Fanny Hooe, the property has a 14 room motel, 2 cabins, a chalet and 86 campsites along with a private sandy beach. Lake Fanny Hooe is an inland lake approximately 1/4 mile from Lake Superior. Guests can enjoy swimming, boating and fishing on this 3 mile long warm water lake.

You can start your daily adventure by fueling up at Lake Effect Bar and Grill for a hearty breakfast and fresh brewed coffee. You can then explore one of the hiking, ATV or mountain biking trail systems that all head up right by the property.  At the end of a day spent partaking of the numerous outdoor activities one can walk down to the 3rd Street dock to enjoy a sunset over Porters Island in the bay and then cap off your day with a signature burger at Lake Effect Bar and Grill.  After having a delicious meal of burgers, fresh corned beef or savory Mac and cheese  stick around for the best cocktail, beer and bourbon selection in the UP.  Then stroll back to the beautiful lakeside resort while the wind rustles through the tall pines.

Whether you are staying at the motel or the cabins/chalet, you will want to rise early to watch the sun come up over Lake Fanny Hooe from the comfort of your own private balcony. Each accommodation will have everything you need for your getaway, but it is not the rooms or the buildings that make this place so special. It is the location on which they stand. It is the experience of stepping away from your constantly connected devices and taking in the serene natural beauty offered by this special part of the world.

Lake Fanny Hooe cabins
The location was wonderful. Right on the shores of Lake Fanny Hooe. Within walking distance to nearby restaurants. I had made an error with the days we would be staying, and it was easy to go online and also call to be sure my days of stay could be changed. They were very helpful and accommodating. However, we were a little disappointed with our room. It was pretty run down and outdated. The beds were very uncomfortable. The toilet didn’t flush so we had to put the chain back on inside back of the tank. Then it kept running so we had to fix it again. A few minor repairs and updates would work wonders for the room. I would have been willing to spend a little more for nicer accommodations because being on the lake was a huge plus. We took our kayaks out right from our room and as I said, great location near town.

Older accommodation in nice location
This is an older building. The bathtub had standing water in it and the bottom of the shower curtain was all black mold. The last 3 days we had mice droppings on the bed in the morning. The mice woke us up as they were trying to get at some snacks we had on the tv stand. They provided a new shower curtain when we asked.

Cleaning problem
The lake is beautiful and peaceful. The location was perfect. The management was courteous and thoughtful. Our room was not cleaned properly, which might not be a huge problem except the bathroom was not acceptable. We debated leaving but chose to stay. We ended up being fully refunded by request of the property manager, although we just asked for our cleaning fee back, which was very nice of him. They were training in new staff and I can only imagine staffing is difficult in their remote area. Hopefully the problems have been rectified.

Manage your expectations
It's basically a motel room with a sink, hot plate and mini-fridge in the far reaches of the UP, not some ski-condo in Colorado. But, it gets the job done. Lots of hidden fees not in the upfront price. Overall, you get what you pay for. Better than a Hostel at Mt. Bohemia, and cheaper too.
