MOUNTAIN JOY COTTAGES #5 - STARS AND STRIPES

Mountain Joy Cottage #5, Stars and Stripes, is named for the rich Southern heritage that is has experienced in its years. Another of our historic cottages, this four bedroom was built in the early 1800's and was used as a Confederate Army Hospital while in Atlanta, GA. It was moved to Mountain Joy Cottages sometime around 1984. The original logs are exposed in the living room as well as the two downstairs bedrooms giving this cottage a real log cabin feel.

Originally the homestead of Maggie Setzer, for whom Maggie Valley was named, the land that Mountain Joy sits is a special place. You will become enchanted with it’s mountain charm, family atmosphere and character. We offer all the modern conveniences you would expect with the year-round access and seclusion that very few can offer.

Enjoy the peaceful country setting of our cottages. We have one, two and four bedroom cottages all equipped with wood burning fireplaces, cable TV, internet and kitchens ready to cook a home made meal. Outside the porches have rocking chairs so you can enjoy your morning coffee or enjoy the sunset on the mountains in the evening. Our glass enclosed outdoor pool (seasonal) offers a delightful place to relax.

Mountain Joy Cottages are centrally located in the heart of Maggie Valley just one block up Setzer Cove Road with easy access to all of the area attractions. We are just minutes off of the Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area is loaded with craft, antique and gift shops. The great outdoors offers horseback riding, golf on area mountain courses, trout fishing in streams, white water rafting and scenic drives. Snow skiing and tubing is available for the entire family at Cataloochee Ski Area. Nightlife includes everything from Jazz to Bluegrass, clogging or dinner entertainment. Our cottages are just a short drive to the Great Smoky Mountain Railway, Asheville and The Biltmore Estate, Cherokee and the Indian Reservation and Harrah’s Casino and historic downtown Waynesville.

Whatever the season, Mountain Joy Cottages and the Great Smokies have something very special to offer. From the wildflowers of spring, to the blaze of colors in the fall or the serenity of winter, come visit and make lasting memories at Mountain Joy Cottages.

Loved this property. Easy to access, comfy beds and up close view of elk in our front yard was really exciting. The only thing I would recommend is electrical outlets and fans in the bathrooms and shower caddy in the downstairs bathroom.

My group and I enjoyed our stay in Maggie Valley. The cabin was very welcoming and comfortable. The only think I would have liked to see, is dish soap and maybe some other kitchen staples. Other than that, it was fantastic

Reviewer Comments: The cabin was Beautiful, tucked away from the main hwy,with nice views of the Mountains in Maggie Valley NC.Nicely decorated and well equipped kitchen. Fireplace,grill,made us feel right at home! Will definitely be back! Both smoke detectors were inoperable,I put 2 new batteries in them and got them working. Lot of dirt and trash under couches and beds,cobwebs should be addressed. Besides that we absolutely loved it!

Cabin 5 was the first cabin we every rented. Our travel group has grown since that first trip, so we have had to rent larger cabins and multiple cabins for our growing family and friends that have joined us. Mountain Joy, under the rental management of Carolina Vacation rentals is the best example of top notch customer service EVER. We actually rented with another company when Mr. Sid and his amazing crew were no longer covering Mountain Joy. So glad that Carolina Vacations are back covering this property.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: I do realize that this is a very old house, however, it is very close quarters. The floors were dirty when we arrived. Some of the towels looked used. We had to call the property owner for someone to come clean, which she did, but nothing more than sweep the floors. They were no better when she left than when she arrived. The staircase in this cabin is very steep and narrow. There were no pictures of the staircase in the listing. The downstairs bathroom floor was very soft, which made of have to use the upstairs shower. This house made me feel claustrophobic. This house definitely needs some upgrades.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had 6 adults in the cabin. The living area was spacious with a great fireplace and large tv. Downstairs bedrooms were very small with no closets. Upstairs bedrooms were more spacious but the shower in the bathroom was a challenge for the tall ones in our group. Grounds and porch were very nice. We had Elk pass through the cabin area right in front of us. The cleanliness left a lot to be desired. When we entered for the first time a dirty rag was on the table. Dirty socks were found in one of the beds. The return vent and fans blades hadn’t been dusted in months. We found a dog leash and diaper in the couch cushions when we were checking to make sure nothing was left behind. Location was great and we enjoyed our time together. Our two favorite places to eat were Joey’s Pancakes right down the hill and Haywood BBQ in Waynesville.

When we called we where given clean sheets promptly. Later we realized there were ants, no coffee maker and stove and toaster oven was nasty! We didn’t have time to complain about that bc we were trying to make the best of what we realized will be the last time my father in law will ever be able to make it to his favorite place in the Mts. Maggie Valley!

Everything was so freaking filthy. Appliances were not clean. I refused to even cook there or even make a cup of coffee with their coffee maker. When I walken in first thing I had to do was clean the fridge. When I finally picked the bedroom the sheets were filthy all the way down to the mattress there was dirt. I had to go to Walmart and purchase bedding for my whole family. They don't have a washer and dryer. Had to buy a coffee pot just to have coffee. Spiders were making their selves at home all over the cabin. I had to buy cleaning supplies to just spend a couple nights there. I even found a nasty used bandaid on the wall by the fridge. I had to pay over $200 night for this place and spent over $600 in cleaning and bedding supplies. Air conditioning down stairs did not work. Just a nasty filthy place. Should not be listed to rent, should be bulldozed!

Stars and Stripes at Mountain Joy Cottages

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Let me start by saying, We really enjoyed our stay at Mountain Joy Cottage #5. The cabin was comfortable and cozy. We had great nights sleep. Loved sitting on the front porch watching the wildlife and especially the daily sighting of the Elk. My dog loved the open green space where she could run. My kids loved all the amenities. The kitchen was well equipped and it had its own charcoal grill. There were only a few issues we had. First there were large spiderwebs in the corners of the rooms and in the bathroom. Second, they need more places for storage in the downstairs bedrooms and bathroom. Third, having to take your trash off-site was inconvenient. The last issue is was there was a skunk that sprayed my daughter and my dog. This happened at night when we had trouble finding a store open to try to get some cleaning supplies for the odor on my daughter and dog. We let the management company know about the skunk and it was already being handled the next day. We would definitely recommend this place and will stay here again!

Labor Day Getaway

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The location was great! It was a nice relaxing setting and you forget that you are right off the main drag. The hot tub is inoperable which was a little disappointing. Had it been working, the pool area closed at 9pm (I mean lights out closed). The pond area was nice but it is not stocked as described in the website. There are picnic tables and a fire pit area, basketball goal, very nice playset for the kids,and cornhole. The cabin decorations were super cute! 🇱🇷 The cabins are pet friendly and that was evident by all of the pet hair left behind on cloth chairs and throw pillows. I'm also not sure about the cleaning staff since there were spider webs all over the place. I can understand some but this was excessive and obviously had been in place a while. We did call and express concern but since it was a holiday weekend, got no response from the cleaning service. Sid in the office was super nice and seemed to be doing the best he could. All in all it was a good stay and I would stay here again. Price is very reasonable although I wish all of the fees were factored into the nightly rate vs tacking them on at the end and jacking the advertised price up. This really isn't a vent session, just sharing our experience :) Hope this helps someone.

This is one step above camping

In two of the bedrooms, there was no closet or dresser - nowhere to put a suitcase or put your clothing away. There are no cabinets in the downstairs bathroom to put your things. There were bugs everywhere. It smelled musty inside. The AC is messed up apparently, because it was either warm or freezing. There is no ice maker in the freezer. The dishes had a layer of dust on them. I will never stay here again, nor would I recommend anyone else stay here.
