About this property

Mas Verdun, a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom farmhouse with heated pool on one acre.

For most of the year we live in part of the house and rent out one wing as a one, two or three bedroom gite.
When set up for Christmas/New Year or July/August, the house comprises four bedrooms, each with an en suite, the master bathroom having a luxurious bath. Bedding options can be configured to suit your needs, as two of the bedrooms have the option of king sized beds or two single beds in each.
The two completely self contained wings are connected by a hallway, thus you have the option of separate living for different families or for teenagers to have their own zone, or the ability to use the space as one, large home.
The main living area consists of a large (100 metre square) south facing, open plan kitchen, dining and living room.
The kitchen is fitted with Miele appliances throughout, as is the connected laundry. The kitchen has an induction cooktop, two ovens, fridge and wine fridge and Nespresso machine (another is available in the second kitchen). Granite benchtops and an antique marble and timber butcher's block round out the kitchen.
The dining room has an antique table, capable of seating eight. There is another oval dining table in the salon which can be used if entertaining larger numbers.
Off the dining room is a small WC and cloak room.
The living area , whilst one large room, has been designed with two zones; a quiet end with sofas and an armchair for reading or listening to music in front of the fireplace in winter, and the other end with two sofas and the large OLED television with Netflix and Amazon Prime, Blu-ray player, receiver for British television and Dolby Atmos surround sound system.
There is a turntable and Sonos sound system with speakers in all the living areas and by the pool in summer or the fireplace in winter.
Throughout the house, in every bedroom and living area you will find USB charging points for mobile devices.
From the living room a winding staircase takes you to up to the huge master bedroom with a luxurious en suite bathroom. Also on this level is a large enclosed terrace which has another Smart TV, king sized sofa bed (not included in accommodation calculations but offers the possibility of sleeping another two people), facilities for making tea, and an office.
Off the other side of the living room is the door to the hall which links to the other three bedrooms and bathrooms, second kitchen, dining and small living area and then onto the western terrace with heated plunge pool. The bedheads in two of these rooms are made from the original barn doors of the farmhouse.
The entire home has stone floors from Burgundy with underfloor heating and cooling, keeping the house at an ambient twenty one degrees all year round, and slightly cooler at night for sleeping.
All bathrooms in the house have double basins, Italian showers, toilets and heated towel rails, and towels, pool towels and shower gel are provided.
All windows and doors in the house, apart from the upstairs terrace, have high quality fly screens.
A portable cot with linen and a high chair are available on request free of charge.
There is parking onsite for up to five cars quite comfortably.
The outside area has three separate shaded terraces set up for dining. The south facing terrace is straight off the living room through double doors and is shaded by a one hundred year old plane tree and a pergola. It has an iron table and seating for ten.
The western terrace is shaded by fig trees and another pergola and features an antique iron and stone table and seating for six and a barbecue, overlooking the heated plunge pool.
The south facing, main pool terrace has a pool house with built in barbecue, gas burner, sink and refrigerator. There is a toilet in the pool house and an outside shower. The dining table here can seat eight under the shade of another pergola. Cooking and eating implements are also in the pool house. In summer the Sonos speakers and wifi extension allow you to listen to music by the pool.
Next to the pool house is a terrace with four daybeds for relaxing as well as another six deck chairs.
The pool itself is 13 x 5 metres, salt water with an electric, retractable cover for safety.
It is heated over summer to an ambient 28 degrees, for your comfort.
There is also a large lawn which links the house area to the pool area, and a full length, 15 metre boules court, framed by the olive grove.
Features of the garden included a stunning stone well, mangeoir and fountain and lighting which highlights the fountain, the well, the plane tree, the olives and the pool area as well as the boules court.
The house itself is on an acre of farmland in the quiet part of Saint Remy. We are surrounded by farms and have forty four olive trees growing in a meadow.
We enjoy glimpses of the Alpilles across the neighbouring farmland.

About the host

Hosted by John McAuley

Host profile image
I am a 56 year old Australian, married, father of four young adult men, all of whom live in Australia. Currently not working but wanting to do lots of travelling. Love good wine, music of all sorts, the beach, walking, my family, eating out, meeting people. My wife and I moved to France in 2015 to pursue our dream of becoming immersed in the Provencal culture. So far so good...

Why they chose this property

When we made the move from Australia, we spent months looking all over the South of France for the property that we had in our minds' eye. When we accidentally stumbled upon Saint Remy we knew that it was where we wanted to live. That was the easy part, finding the right home was another battle. We bought what was effectively a 215 year old crumbling barn and restored and extended it, started the garden from scratch with the exception of one plane tree, three fig trees and forty four olives and we are now sharing our piece of paradise with others as a bed and breakfast, and over summer and Christmas, the entire house is available.

What makes this property unique

We have outfitted the house with the very best and latest in technology, but retained the original Provencal feel. We think we have the happy medium in where we live between rural charm and quiet and proximity to the old town of Saint Remy, approximately 2.5 kilometres away.
