About this property

Stylish, 1830s Stone Barn on13 acres, 20 mins Sarlat. Relaxing and private

Imagine the gently sloping rim of a shallow tea cup saucer. This 1830s renovated stone barn, an 8 minute walk to the Dordogne River, sits on the edge of that rim, oriented south/southwest, a large entry courtyard, overlooking a hidden garden, with views over its own little valley. Along the south side of the entire length of the building (72 feet), French doors and large windows flood the rooms with light throughout the day. The intimate valley, over 13 rolling acres, looks across to an abandoned farm, where sheep still graze daily. Silence, sunlight, and incredible starry nights are pretty much your only neighbors. Not a typical renovation (which often chops up the rhythm of a space to maximize the number of bedrooms), this property was designed with great care and planning to preserve its architectural authenticity, integrity and flow. The high ceiling (25+ ft) timber framed spaces naturally dictate how the room arrangements flow. Especially gorgeous during the off seasons. Heaven!

I am a very active Francophile, designer, photographer and a teacher. I try to spend as much time as possible in France, in my beloved stone barn. I renovated the barn from scratch. Dirt floors, stone walls! It was a great learning experience It firmly 'cemented' the area in my heart. I love the barn. It is my spiritual home. It is filled with light and is very calming. Nothing makes me happier than to spend time there. Everyone who enters comments on the calming quality of the place; this without any prompting from me. You can walk to the Dordogne or bike along its shores directly from the house. Two towns are within minutes to supply you with everything you need, including two weekly markets. The area close to the barn abounds in things to explore and discover. Sunsets! Come and see!

Why they chose this property

I had visited the region regularly since 1983 and was completely taken with it. The pure simplicity and natural beauty spoke to me. I have friends in the region who have been there for over 40 years, so I was immediately immersed in vrai France, one filled with the everyday lifestyle of the French. This had a big influence on me and continues to this day. I love the area because I love being outdoors. I spend most of my free time hiking with friends and punctuating the hikes with either great picnics or terrific well deserved lunches out. There is so much to see! The biking is also stellar and not too difficult. The area appears remote and has many remote qualities but has every amenity one could hope for. The markets continue to thrill me, and I never miss a visit to one.

What makes this property unique

Serenity and Respite! Hiking, biking, canoeing, markets, gardens, history, vide greniers, cooking, outings with friends, Met HD opera 20 minutes away in Sarlat! All modern conveniences within 10 minutes of the house, yet the house is a world away. The house is designed in a very open plan so that there is lots of light and privacy yet open space through out. There are fabulous gardens and incredible towns and villages to visit, all easily accessed from the house. And when one returns in the early evening, nothing satisfies like a glass of cold rose, while sitting on the terrace enjoying the private view of the hidden valley.
