Beautiful house with plenty of space including a lovely outdoor area. Friendly welcome by host and a lovely welcome basket. Bonus to have space to park out cars too!
Lovely property, even better than the photos! Perfect for a family of four with teens and a dog. Great central position. Owners were communicative and helpful. Would recommend and likely to return.
Property was excellent with short walk to all local areas and beach, only two issues, you would struggle to park two decent sized cars, I struggled with one, and the living room sofa could do with upgrading.
Our first stay in Swanage. The house has everything you need, very comfortable and well furnished. 5 adults and a dog. Right in the heart of the town but so quiet. We really enjoyed our week. Swam in the sea and had wonderful walks. We will definitely return
Spacious and comfortable house in a very central location in Swanage
We had a lovely week . The house is very centrally located with a very very short walk into the town centre.!
The house is very well equipped and suited all of our needs.
Nice surprise was the welcome pack - thank-you!
Would definitely stay again.
Considering this was a last minute decision to have a week away, the cottage turned out to be extremely well located, comfortable and everything you needed. Karen was most helpful as I forgot to pack my hairdryer and on contacting her, the same day she deposited one at the door. Swanage and the surrounding area is lovely to explore and we had the added advantage of sunshine
We have just arrived home from our stay in The Old Bakery in Swanage. We stayed for a week over Easter. What a lovely place, it had everything we needed for the week. Very well equipped kitchen, large Smart TVs, lovely bathroom upstairs including bath and shower. Toilet downstairs, log burner in the main room and an outside secure patio area. The kids loved the Mezzanine too, what a great feature. It also has off road parking and it's only 2 minutes walk to the beach and shops which was fantastic. The owners are great communicators and are very attentive too. We had a small issue on arrival which was very quickly resolved. I'm sure we'll be back to stay in the future.
The Old Bakery was just perfect for a family of four. It is a great mix of contemporary and quaint with quality furnishings and comfortable beds. We found it very light and airy and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The parking was an added bonus, as at busy times in Swanage parking can be problematic. We have stayed in Swanage numerous times and this is by far our favourite cottage. It is especially good if you are taller! It’s a great base for walking to Dancing Ledge, Studland, Agglestone Rock and of course Swanage is metres away - with a great mix of local and independent shops. Despite being so close to the action, the cottage was very quiet. We really appreciated the generous welcome basket too. A lovely touch after sitting in bank holiday traffic!
This was a fantastic, well-appointed property, in a quiet back street in central Swanage. The owners were really easy to deal with, and there was an amazing pinboard/map/folder combination of information in the hallway of the property.
250m to the beach. 500m to the Pier.
The property had everything we needed for 3 adults and 2 kids (Inc washing machine and drier after a particularly muddy walk to Chapman's Pool).
The main living space is great, centred around a large dining table with double height ceiling.
The kids commandeered the mezzanine for iPad watching which left the main lounge and dining area for adult usage. We made use of the HDMI for the main TV and the amazing Wifi for evening TV watching via Chromecast.
If you don't have kids and actually want to go out in the evenings (!) the property is ideally located for pubs and restaurants.
Even so, we took advantage of Castaways for a family meal out and Fish Plaice for a Friday night takeaway feast. Both 2 mins walk!
We have visited Swanage before and would recommend for young families - there is enough to do in the town and by the beach (with a nice combination of shops and activities, not just arcades) but plenty to do in the locality as well.
If you are walkers, we recommend the Old Harry's Rocks walk (especially the "double view" of Poole Harbour one way and Swanage Bay the other, on Ballard's Down). Early morning runs along the beach also a highlight of our stay for one member of the family.
Stayed here as a party of 5 friends and 1 dog, and couldn't have asked for a better place. Parking is tight but doable for two small-medium cars, the living space is a good size for a group, kitchen is fairly well-equipped, bedrooms are comfortable, but most importantly you're only a couple of minutes' walk from the sea, shops and other entertainments. It meant that even on a rainy day we could hunker down in the cottage but still pop out for an occasional thing (like fish & chips, say). If I come back to Swanage for future holidays I'll definitely look to see if this place is free again.
Renting the property was easy. The owner responds quickly if you have any inquiries. A large comfortable space. We have rented twice now and really enjoy the premises. Would highly recommend.
We were impressed with the property as soon as we walked in & the outside patio was a lovely addition
Loved the location & proximity to the town & the beach
Having a parking space for our 2 cars was great (once we got used to how to do it!!)
All in all a lovely property & we would love to return
Stunning building, great outdoor space with three pice patio furnatur and sun most of the day.
Property is perfect location for all amenities and very dog friendly.
I rented the property with my mum, partner and adult children one of whom was graduating from Bournemouth Uni. We also has our dog with us. We had fabulous weather, sunny though cold. The Old Bakery is perfectly located in Swanage, a short walk from the shops and seafront. The property is beautiful, with everything you might need. Nothing was too much trouble for Karen the owner. Swanage is really dog friendly too, we are already planning our return!
The house is near to everything no need to use your car. Beach , restaurants and everything in short walking distance. Comfortable house everything you need. Lovely shower and comfy beds.
Had a lovely week in Swanage, helped by the beautiful weather. Unrelated to accomodation but please be aware that lots of restaurants are not open throughout the week which meant it was great that we had a fully equipped kitchen to utilise. The accomodation was very comfortable and a great location right behind the high street, the welcome pack was a nice touch. We had an issue with the fridge at the beginning of our stay which was sorted really quickly by the owners with great communication. With 3 bedrooms plus the mezzanine this is a great place to stay with family and friends.
We loved our week in the old bakery. The photos on the site looked good, but they don’t do it justice- it’s even bigger with absolutely loads of room for everyone. The decor and facilities were to a very high standard, with everything you need for a relaxing holiday.
The location is also perfect- right in the heart of Swanage, but tucked away in a quiet mews, so you won’t get disturbed and can park right outside. It’s literally minutes to walk into town, to the beach, or to get fish and chips!
We had a lovely week using it as a base to visits lulworth cove, brownsea island, kimmeridge and durkston. There’s so many beautiful beaches and breathtaking walks in the area we could easily have stayed another week.
Lovely property with plenty of character in ideal location!
Wonderful weeks stay, very comfortable and plenty of space to spread out! My son loved the bunk beds and my daughter enjoyed having a double bed to herself! Such an ideal location to explore the Jurassic coast. Walking distance to the beach and lots of great family friendly places to eat if you don't fancy cooking! Parking is a little tight, we have quite a large car but my husband found reversing up to the house gave him a better chance of swinging the car round, he was an expert by the end of the week! We definitely will be back, very sad to leave!
The accommodation was very central really great for the more elderly, clean and comfortable everything available that you might need. Good WiFi. Unfortunately for us the weather wasn’t so great but we just luv the area and made the best of a bad job.
Would definitely recommend this property.
We were very pleased with The Old Bakery. It was more spacious than we expected, the large hallway was particularly useful when coming in with a push chair and wet footwear. We particularly liked the mezzanine level which was good for the 3 year old to escape to whilst we were still sitting at the table as she could still see and talk to us. It was very cosy up there and lovely to lie the baby on the carpet for a roll around.
I think we would want more outside space in the summer, but it was good to be able to park two cars at the property.
The house is very conveniently located just behind the High Street and only a short walk to the sea front, very handy with the children. Swanage is a great place to stay with a family, and we loved playing on the beach (even in October!); flying a kite on the clifftop; walking to Durlston Head; taking the train to Corfe Castle and a boat to Brownsea Island.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to friends and family.

About the host

We are in our fifties and have 2 sons. We live in Parkstone, near Poole, Dorset - a 30 minute drive (using the Swanage ferry) or an hour's cycle. We bought The Old Bakery in 2009, having spotted it on the Internet and then seeing it on one of our weekend cycles in the Purbecks. Work started in January 2010 and was finished in October the same year. It certainly became a labour of love but we are really pleased with the results. We hope you are too.
Why they chose this property
We love the Purbecks and walk or cycle with family and friends in the area most weekends. For us, we can reach areas of calm and unspoilt beauty quickly and easily, and still be home in time for tea! We were keen to buy a property in Swanage because, not only are the coast and countryside right on the doorstep, but also Swanage has all the conveniences we require and more. We love to take what is literally a one minute stroll to Love Cake on the High Street for a cappuccino or to walk on to Gee Whites open-air seafood restaurant for prawns and 'fizz'. We have found Swanage to be a really friendly town with loads going on throughout the year. The Folk Festival is really fun, Purbeck Arts Week (PAW) is well worth a visit and New Year's Eve showcases some inspirational fancy dress outfits!
What makes this property unique
The fact that we can spend a great few days at The Old Bakery without ever using the car is a huge advantage and makes for a truly relaxing break. We love walking and love the fact that we can walk directly from the cottage. We often walk to Corfe village/castle and catch the steam train back or vice versa. Alternatively, we like to walk to Durlston Country Park to enjoy the wonderful views and to try to spot orchids and even adders in the summer months. We love to head for the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers for one of their famous pasties, dropping down to Dancing Ledge and Chapman's Pool, time permitting.
