About this property

PUAKO BEACH: an eclectic, TRANQUIL and HISTORIC oceanfront community.

We have a two story residential home, located across the street from the turquoise clear waters of the Pacific ocean.
Our guest apartment is on the ground floor with its own private entrance through a garden atmosphere into a large screened in porch with plants, table and couch. The apartment is 1000sf with a King size bed with soft bamboo sheets and air-conditioning in the bedroom with additional cooling fans throughout. The apartment is ideal for three adults or two adults and two kids, max. Four adults is not recommended as the pullout couch bed in the living room is not really designed for two adults, in my humble opinion.
The back door leads to a bucolic outdoor porch setting with a breakfast table, birds galore, a barbecue and a small fenced in yard with beautiful views of adjacent wild State land and magnificent Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains beyond.
No fire engines, no police car sirens, nothing but a peaceful atmosphere.
We provide our guests with snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach umbrella and a wonderful breakfast spread (heavy on fresh fruit). With advance notice, we are happy to arrange rentals for any water equipment that we don't have, including kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, and scuba gear. Bicycles are also available for rentals.
The large living/dining area includes a small kitchen island and has been remodeled with new wood flooring, paint and carpets. It is quite lovely, comfortable and inviting; a very homey, cool and spacious environment with soft paint colors. Some say its more spacious than the pictures show. The air-conditioning in the bedroom and fans in the other rooms take care of any heat issues.

Thank you.

A Lovely Stay
We had a wonderful week staying at Bailey's house in Puako. Puako itself is a quiet, sedate neighborhood--perfect for quiet mornings and afternoons. Proximity to the beach is stellar, whether you use the Puako beach access points or take a short drive to Beach 69 or Hapuna. The house itself was perfect for us (a family of four, with two young children): we loved sitting on the back porch watching the myriad birds at the feeders and the wild pigs in the back fields. The kitchen is well-stocked--better equipped with staples and pots and pans than many places we have stayed. Wonderful place, highly recommended!

Relaxing and quiet
The apartment is spacious, comfortable and homey. This is not a high end modern experience, but a cozy and relaxed retreat. The bed is very comfy, bathroom shower newish, and the apartment is very clean. The proprietor, Bailey, is gracious and kind. We felt more like his personal guest than a renter. A lovely experience.

Paradise in Puako
Had a wonderful time. Close to everything we needed at Kohala. Spent the days diving, snorkelling the local beaches and sampling the great bars and restaurants nearby. We are hoping to return soon again

We truly love meeting guests from all over the world and being able to share our unique and beautiful corner of the world, here in Hawaii. Our experience with guests has been exceptional and the response gratifying.
We have been living in Hawaii for going on 20 years where we raised our four fabulous children. Bailey First came to Hawaii as Peace Corp volunteer in '69, going to Thailand.
My favorite vacation spot, is sailing in the British Virgin Islands, favorite city to eat is San Francisco with Chicago tied and favorite city to visit New York. Arts aficionado, my wife a buff fitness nut and me a movie slouch.
I am Realtor in Hawaii and I also sell salted and smoked salmon from our fish days in Alaska (30yrs and counting) and spend way to much time volunteering for the arts and trying to raise $$, the bane of the arts world. and I am Fascinated by the Universe thank you Keck and Canada France Observatories, a must visit when you are here.

Why they chose this property

I am told, Its the best PUAKO BEACH listing for its price. Puako is an eclectic, TRANQUIL and HISTORIC oceanfront community, famous for its white sand beaches and turquoise warm waters populated with whales, dolphins, turtles and reef fish. Water sports abound. Bucolic, peaceful & quiet: If that what you are looking for then look no further as THIS IS IT!!
You have access to our 6000sf yard with its delicious Mango trees, fruiting in summer, a small fenced area with dining table and lounge chairs and a barbecue, expansive lawn and natural plants. Additionally, our back yard opens onto thousands of acres of open and treed State land with a three mile walking fire break and unobstructed access to the land for any intrepid hiker. On occasion we have wild pigs, a flock of wild turkeys, goats and the Hawaiian owl or "Pueo" soaring in the evening air. If you love stars you will be overwhelmed by the clear non polluted night skies. We supply lawn chairs for star gazing, a must while you are here. AND birds, yes, we have birds and yes, I do feed them. You will wake up in the morning to the sound of this lovely aviary which I hope you will find as musical as I do.

What makes this property unique

Though we live upstairs, we are very quiet and with luck you won't hear a sound. We will be available to assist you with any and all issues including best beaches, best places to snorkel, best restaurants in the area and best luxury hotels to visit as well as our too-many-to-count visitor attractions. We enjoy the company of our guests and will be here to meet your needs.
Folks often ask about the whales and yes, they are in abundance during the winter months (late December to early April) and lovely to watch from the shore as they breech with frequency and often you can see them jumping from the ocean. Our weather is mostly sunny with the occasional rain shower, and temperatures ranging from the low 70s F (21 C) to mid 80s F (30 C) during the winter and 80s F (30 C) to 90s F (35 C) in the short summer months.
It is a comfortable 15 minute walk south along the ocean to the Fairmont Orchid hotel with its excellent restaurants (though access to resort facilities are restricted to guests). A mile walk or drive north on Puako Beach road brings you to our small local grocery store which is open from 8am to 7pm daily.
Puako Beach road is about three miles long and dead ends at a County park. It is a popular three mile walking and biking area. There is Beach Access every 1/4 mile which makes for 12 beach/reef access points (with great snorkeling and turtle viewing) including the County park and County boat launch.
Close local beaches include: BEACH 69 aka WAIALEA BAY STATE PARK (10min)-our personal favorite with good snorkeling and boogie boarding, bathroom facilities and lots of shade, SPENCER BEACH (15min)-very kid friendly, MAUNA KEA beach (12min)-an amazing crescent of white sand in a clear calm cove, and HAPUNA BEACH STATE PARK (10min)-the Islands most famous and popular -white sand, great boogie boarding and picnic tables and BBQing facilities. (See pictures)
The nearby resorts offer abundant dining and shopping opportunities.
