Luxury 2 bed ensuite cottage in Scottish Estate setting, short walk to loch
Ross Cottage is one of the Dunmore Cottages on 120 acres of peace and tranquillity on the shores of West Loch Tarbert in South Knapdale, just seven miles from the fishing village of Tarbert on Loch Fyne.
The owners purchased Dunmore Castle and Cottages in 2015/16 which sits on a beautiful estate with stunning views over West Loch Tarbert. They have an exciting vision for Dunmore, which continues to realised and includes the full renovation of the self-catering cottages. Their aim is to create a fabulous destination on the West Coast of Scotland providing excellent facilities with a homely feel. Ross Cottage is a luxury traditional stone cottage all on one level, which has recently been renovated to a very high standard. Under the previous quality assurance system with Visit Scotland Ross Cottage achieved 5 stars. The Cottage comprises two en suite bedrooms with underfloor warming in the en suites. The Blue Bedroom has a walk-in shower and large bath. The white bedroom has a walk-in shower en suite. Both bedrooms have king size beds. The kitchen and dining room are fully equipped to the highest standard including dishwasher and Nespresso coffee machine. A 60" curved screen TV is in the living room with views out through the trees to the West Loch.
In the courtyard there is an outdoor table, chairs, gas BBQ and outdoor wood burning heater available for exclusive use by the guests staying in Ross cottage.
The estate is named after the Bronze age fort which tops the spectacular cliffs above the house. These cliffs afford breathtaking views of the West Loch and out to the islands of Gigha and to Islay, famous for its whisky making. Dunmore Cottages are a perfect vacation retreat either to relax by the open wood fires or enjoy the many outdoor activities that are available. Located on the shores of West Loch Tarbert, and only 7 miles from the picturesque fishing village of Tarbert, guests can enjoy the many hiking trails, and abundant wildlife, take a trip to the nearby Loch Stornoway sandy beach or further afield to the lovely 6 mile long Westport beach, sample the excellent area restaurants (the award winning Kilberry Inn is only 8 miles away), visit the inner Hebridean Islands of Islay and Jura, whisky tasting at the numerous distilleries, visit the historic Kilmartin Glen, walk the beautiful gardens on the Isle of Gigha or Brodick Castle on the Island of Arran.
Tarbert sports a 9-hole golf course. Horseback riding and fishing are also available locally.

We had the most amazing few days exploring the beautiful surroundings and enjoying the peace and quiet of Dunmore Cottages. The cottages are absolutely perfect—so clean and equipped with everything we could possibly need. It truly felt like a home away from home!
From scenic walks and wildlife encounters to beach picnics and cozy nights in, it was the perfect getaway
Perfect get away for us and our little one. Amanda couldn't have been more helpful. The cottage itself is spotless and newly renovated, the kitchen has everything you need, we felt like we were at home.
Beautiful & quiet part of Scotland.
Peace if you want it, yet plenty to do around Dunmore and north, south, east or west. Cottage is as well equipped as any we have stayed in. Very comfortable, a good 'at home' feel, and everything works. Very much recommended for exploring the general area.
Perfect location for a blissfully quiet few days. In all the years we have been to Scotland we have never seen so much wildlife. The remoteness of the cottage did not put us off as it is serviced by an excellent single track road with many passing places. The cottage itself was very clean and added a nice amount of luxury to our stay. Would definitely like to revisit.
Excellent accomodations. Worth the time it takes to get there. The cottages and castle grounds are stunning and beautiful. Kullberry Inn for dinner highly recommended! Amanda and Phillipa are wonderful communicators. Quintessential Scotland experience!
Very relaxing time at a first class property. Exceptionally clean and well kept. Plenty of large high quality towels. In the middle of the forest with a glimpse of the loch from the kitchen. Grounds are beautiful. Communication and
The theme of the 5* Ross cottage is blue and it did not disappoint - it was 5* through and through and the blue extended to the sky we encountered - in April!
Facilities fantastic, location excellent and we had the weather to boot (during the day a least).
Recommended to all.
We absolutely loved our time here. The property and the cottage is immaculate and so well laid out. We enjoyed using the fireplace and the washer and dryer worked great! The rest of our family stayed in the Fraser Cottage and it was so nice being close but having our own space to retire to. Very quiet and you’ll get to see a few adorable sheep too! Amanda knows a ton and saved us from missing a trip to Islay (we didn’t know you had to book the ferry far in advance). There are some really good walks nearby. We highly recommend the walk through the forest that is a mile or two back down the main road in the direction of town. Loved it and had a magical quiet time!
Fascinating and truly unique cottage in rural Argyll Scotland
In its overall setting and its design and décor, this "cottage" is quite special. (I put "cottage" in quotes because it is not at all small , but actually rather spacious.) It's situated in a very woodsy location, and that is the source of much of its charm. The views from the kitchen and living room windows looking out over the nearby hills leading down to the waters of the bay were a pleasure to behold, especially during sunrises and sunsets.
All rooms in the cottage were fully equipped -- the kitchen in particular seemed to lack nothing in the way of appliances and utensils (great for evenings when we chose to dine in). And the bedroom closets contained enough spare linens to stock a modestly sized home goods store.
I do have to mention some idiosyncrasies of the property that we as Americans probably found especially, well, idiosyncratic. Number one would be the access road, the memorable highway B8024. This is a one lane road, rather twisty and hilly, which must be traversed for six or so miles to arrive at Ross Cottage. After a week in Argyll we came to understand that this is a normal road in that part of the world, but our initial encounters were a tad daunting. However, we eventually made our way up and down it maybe ten or so times all without mishap.
One other minor item worth mentioning would be the controls on the various electric radiators located throughout the cottage. In hindsight these are pretty straightforward, but it did take some experimenting to get them set properly (and we never could get the bathroom floor warmers to work -- maybe we missed something?)
One bit of advice I'd pass on to future visitors to Ross Cottage: make bookings early, if possible even prior to your stay. Because we failed to do this we missed out on two desirable attractions. One was the Kilberry Inn which we have reason to believe is the best restaurant in the immediate area, but which was already booked solid for the entire week we were there. And the second was the ferry to Islay which we had hoped to take to visit a distillery or two on that Isle, but which we also failed to contact in time. Let the fruits of our procrastination be a lesson to you!
And finally, I have to give Ross Cottage a special bit of praise for one small, but very useful, piece of equipment, namely, a Bluetooth speaker located in the dining nook. This enabled us to have music at the dinner table. Very thoughtful!
My wife and I stayed at Ross cottage for a week in July. The cottage was absolutely lovely and had everything we needed for a comfortably stay and the stylish fixtures made this a real hone from home. Amanda called with us and was very knowledgeable about the area and was full of good ideas for our stay.
I would have no reservation recommending this fantastic cottage for a stay in the area.
Ross cottage was a wonderful place for myself and my young family to stay. The amenities were top of the range and the property manager, Amanda, made us feel wonderfully welcome. There was great communication with the owner and the pre arrival information was incredibly helpful. The grounds and views surrounding them were stunning. We had a lovely stay across the Easter break and would thoroughly recommend a stay here.
I cannot express highly enough how enjoyable our stay was in Ross Cottage. It is elegantly furnished, comfortable and very well equipped - you really will want for nothing whilst staying here! The slightly remote location provides for a restful holiday, yet there is lots to explore in this stunningly beautiful area and we never tired of the view across the Loch. Thank you to the owners and manager for helping to make our stay so enjoyable.
Ross cottage was amazing. So comfy and well equipped. The welcome pack was really lovely and luxurious. Only slight drawback was that there was quite a drive to get to Tarbert down a twisty single track road. A wee bit of hassle if you were out through the day and wanted to go out to eat. Otherwise fantastic .
We loved Ross Cottage. It welcomed us from opening the front door. With very high quality furnishings and appliances we couldn't have wanted more. The beds were comfortable and it was great to have two very good en-suite bathrooms.
We would have no reservations about recommending Ross Cottage to anyone who wanted to stay on the Mull of Kintyre and we would definitely stay there again.
We were looking for somewhere quiet to explore the area as we hadn't been to this part of Scotland before, we found the perfect place at Ross cottage, it has been styled to perfection and there is nothing lacking at the cottage, it is so cosy and welcoming after a day walking or cycling. We can't fault it.
We had an enjoyable week at Ross Cottage. Five stars for comfort, facilities, cleanliness, and location. We also benefitted from beautiful weather and took advantage of the barbeque and outdoor space. We explored the nearby historic sites and enjoyed the network of local walks and footpaths. We appreciated the information provided in the cottage and browsing through the books on the Argyll and the Isles. We would thoroughly recommend staying at Ross Cottage for a relaxing break on the beautiful Argyll coast.
En arrivant , il faisait noir , pas facile de le trouver. Route très étroite. Mais une fois à l intérieur on oublie ce périple. Cottage bien équipé et douillet .
My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Dunmore's Ross Cottage. It was beautifully appointed, well equipped, roomy and very comfortable. The setting for the cottage was gorgeous. It was so relaxing to sit in the lounge after a day of exploring and enjoy the outdoor greenery in front of a crackling fire. The cottage was relatively close to two ferry terminals which enabled us to visit the islands of Islay and Arran. We really enjoyed a memorable meal at the Kilberry Inn down the road, thanks to Amanda's suggestion. The very friendly Amanda was there shortly after our arrival to show us around, answer our questions and make suggestions. She took special care to assist my wife who was having a painful health issue. A big thanks to you Amanda! Our only quibble is it would have been helpful to have known that the cottage was located a 6 mile drive along a single track lane. Its isolation, while pleasant once there, was a bit of an adventure to negotiate the lane's many dips and twisting blind turns. Otherwise, we highly recommend a stay at Ross Cottage.
Superbly appointed cottage everything you need for a short break has been thought of and then some. Amanda the property manager was so helpful and made us feel very welcome. If you want a break from city life then this is the place to come to the scenery is spectacular and the location stunning.
Tip take midge repellent with you as the song says with teeth like piranhas they'll drive you bananas only if you let them!! Apart from that I would highly recommend this property.

Delightful Dunmore!
We (me, my husband, and my in-laws) had a great time staying n Ross Cottage. It has been refurbished tastefully and offers all the home comforts (which was wonderful given that me and my husband had run the Kintyre Way Ultra on the Saturday that we arrived!) The setting is gorgeous and you get a good view of the Islay ferry as it goes up and down West Loch Tarbert. The location is good (it doesn’t take long to drive from Tarbert) so it’s great for exploring Kintyre or heading north into mid-Argyll. We had a fabulous week and didn’t want to leave!

Fabulous accommodation
The cottage really was fabulous with everything you could wish for. It was furnished to a very high standard with high quality lovely furnishings. The view from the kitchen window was lovely and it was so peaceful. There was plenty of space for our 4 year old daughter to run around and explore and you can walk to the Lochside from the house provided you’re prepared for no pathways which was all part of the fun !! The house is about 8 miles from Tarbert where there are some lovely seafood restaurants. Would definitely highly recommend.
