Lucie's Hideaway, named for my mother who loved bright colors, especially red and yellow, is a lovely and whimsical, newly restored and converted 1800's corn crib, now a new TINY HOUSE suitable for one or two adults. It is a sunny rural oasis with seven windows and two sky lights, and a colorful, artist inspired décor. YES, this is a TINY house, but still, there is a LARGE open space main room with wood floor, and original beams. For sleeping there a replica of an antique spindle queen sized bed with a high quality, new Tuft and Needle brand mattress, an antique oak writing desk, several unique, redone, 2 comfortable chairs for reading or relaxing, and two expandable vintage enamel topped tables which insure plenty of space for eating, creating art work, writing or using a computer (There is great WIFI reception), (some art supplies provided), or playing SCRABBLE. There is a radio and CD/tape player, but NO TELEVISION. The mini kitchen has 2 larger mini-refrigerators, a microwave, a coffeemaker, a large electric skillet and toaster oven/ convection oven combo. Keep in mind, however that cooking a LARGE full meal is not what this tiny kitchen is outfitted to do. There are many great restaurants nearby if a small meal in a tiny kitchen does not leave your appetite satisfied. There is an antique stained glass window in the kitchen that looks out to the yard where there are often deer visiting. A small barn/garden shed abuts the tiny house. The barn previously housed three goats, but they have "retired" and moved around the corner to join a larger herd on a neighbor's farm. A short 20 minute walk or two minute drive will take you there for a visit to a whole herd of goats, a horse, and other farm animals. The bathroom has a full shower, a sink with vanity and a new, sophisticated, high tech, environmentally friendly composting toilet. It is neither an outhouse nor a porta-potty. IT IS TOTALLY ODOR FREE !!
I appreciate guests taking water conservation seriously.
There is a small flag stone patio outside the front door , with a small table and chairs and a mini- WEBER charcoal grill.
Pets are generally not permitted to visit ( with occasional exceptions), but if you do enjoy animals, there is a Chihuahua, Vinny, and a blue heeler/cattle dog, Lola, who live with the owner in the main house. Lucie's Hideaway is a TOTALLY NONSMOKING PROPERTY, both inside and out. There are separate electric heating units in the main room, kitchen and bath, and a window air conditioner in the main room. In the fall it can be COOL, so please bring proper clothing. This winter DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER, the cottage will be available to rent weekends only. There is heat, but if you prefer a super hot environment this would not be for you!! It is quite comfortable, but a bit on the cooler side.
The main house, where the property owner lives, is a historic cape. It is next door, but both houses are on a ten acre wooded parcel shared with deer, birds and other occasional wild life in a rural setting. There is plenty of privacy for both residences. Up at the far end of the long, dirt driveway, which leads to the property, there is a historic cemetery which many history buffs have found fascinating.
If you are seeking the restorative benefit of natural surroundings, an undisturbed escape for completing a thesis, a short story or an artistic project, a relaxing respite at the end of the day after visiting a son or daughter at college (URI is 10minutes away, Brown, RISD, Salve Regina, Providence College are all within a 30-40 minute drive) or just a a mini vacation from excessive technology to enjoy walking, hiking, biking or kayaking, Lucie's Hideaway is a perfect setting. Or if one is looking for peace and quiet at night yet desiring more stimulation by day, Lucie's Hideaway is only ten minutes from the quaint, artistic sailing village of Wickford, twenty minutes from Newport where there are music festivals, art museums, historic mansions and fabulous restaurants, 25 minutes to very beautiful ocean beaches, and 35 minutes to the port of Galillee where the 45 minute ferry takes you to Rhode Island's own gem, Block Island . Providence and Mystic are both only 35 minutes away, with all the cultural and historic sights they have to offer. Bicycling , kayaking, and hiking are all options right out the door or within a ten minute drive. Exeter also has several very good restaurants of it's own within a five minute drive.
The property owner is a therapist and artist and lives in the main house next door. She is available as needed to assist with information about any interests or resources in the community.
If you like simple country living, enjoy the sounds of nature, and are committed to a value system that respects our environment, choose to stay several nights in Lucie's Hideaway I think you will be very, very pleased with your choice as it is an idyllic little secret special place.
