Algerine Cottage is lauded for it's perfect location. A delightful, spacious, dog-friendly cottage situated within 100 yards of the quay in the stunning harbour of Wells-next-the-Sea, and close to local shops and amenities.
Tucked away up a narrow lane just off the harbour of this lively harbour town, Algerine is perfect place for soggy children and dogs to potter home to after a paddle. Tiled floors downstairs and a ground floor bathroom make this a popular choice for dog owners and active families who like to get down and dirty exploring the beaches and coastal path. The inclusion of a ground floor bedroom combined with the cottage's proximity to the town amenities means Algerine ticks the boxes for families of mixed ages and abilities, or those who wish to leave the car behind. With a well-equipped kitchen, coastal touches, one single bedroom, one king-size and two double bedrooms with plenty of storage, plus an additional shower room upstairs, Algerine Cottage is very practical whilst retaining the charm of an old fisherman's cottage. The cottage has gas central heating and two gas effect wood burning stoves in the sitting room and dining area, making it a great year round retreat for people looking for peace and quiet with everything on the doorstep, from pubs and shops, to miles and miles of scenic walks.
The lane is very narrow, meaning there is no designated parking for Algerine Cottage, the advantage being very little passing traffic. You're more likely to see alpacas wander past as they are taken on their walks round the back lanes and lokes of Wells. You can find free street parking nearby.
Additional Information: Three well behaved dogs are welcome (small additional charge). Travel cot and high chair available on request. Please bring your own mattress and linen for the travel cot.

Clean, comfortable and generally well-equipped (although more cutlery, a bread bin and a few Tupperware boxes for leftovers in the fridge would have made it even better!). Nevertheless would recommend this Cottage to anyone - the location is superb and the daily parade of alpacas was an unexpected delight. The "Cottage manual", with its detailed information on all those brand new gadgets, was pretty impressive too.
Spotless but loft hatch too small so cold draft when the wind blows. Downstairs curtain pulls both broken. Downstairs tiled throughout so would be cold in the autumn and winter. Close to amenities and parking was hit and miss.

A very well positioned, pretty property that looks great. On closer inspection there were bits that weren't in full working order, the manual for the heating didn't match the actual heating control, some curtains were broken, the sink didn't drain properly. The sofas weren't overly comfortable. The smallest room down stairs was fine when the door was open but when it had been shut you could smell damp in the room.
The property was lovely, don't get me wrong, it just lacked complete TLC which is what I would hope for when paying a large amount of money.
The position of the property completely made up for the complete TLC. A very short walk into Wells and the area is lovely and quiet with many great walks on your doorstep.

Lovely cottage for a short break away
Algerine Cottage is in a lovely quiet location just a very short walk from Wells Harbour and the perfect location to explore both Wells and the surrounding areas. We spent 4 nights there in March. Parking close by wasn't a problem. We dropped our luggage off and then went off to find suitable parking a few minutes walk away.
The cottage is clean and tidy with all the basics required for a short break. The kitchen is well equipped and clean, although there is no microwave. There is ample hot water and towels.
It's ideal for anyone looking for a basic holiday home with no frills in a great location.
The small downstairs bedroom smelt strongly of damp as did the shower room upstairs and despite being hardy souls the bedrooms were freezing on the first night and the bedlinen felt damp.
Once we'd tweaked the heating it was fine and the house rapidly heated up.
Whilst it might have been a little cramped if the suggested occupancy of 7 stayed it was perfect for the 3 friends who shared the house for a short break, and we had a lovely 4 night break.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay at Algerine Cottage.
It's good to know you enjoyed your four-night break with your friends.
Thank you for your comments with regards to the issues with the heating upon arrival. We are sorry you felt it smelled of damp - had we known, we would have done our utmost to assist.
We do hope to be able to welcome you back to Norfolk in the future.
Kind regards

Enjoyed our stay and would come again, would prefer better quality mattresses and a front door that is easier to lock.
Location and size is great

Comfortable cottage
The cottage was comfortable and well equipped .. However I was disappointed that there was no welcome pack .we arrived late on Saturday evening .. Milk in the fridge would have been appriciated . 2 dishwasher tablets !! The towels were very small and had seen better days .the electricity meter was on the landing outside the bedroom and hums very loudly .. I reported it and an electrician arrived promptly but the meter does need replacing .i would gladly book this cottage again , but some little touches would greatly improve it .

Thank you very much for your review. This can be invaluable as sometimes unless things are reported to us or an owner as being faulty, we are unaware that things need dealing with. I do hope you had a lovely stay and that we can welcome you back soon.

Algerine Cottage August 2018
We really enjoyed our stay at Algerine Cottage, however our main concern was the lack of a secure space for our dog. The courtyard was not really suitable for a dog, and the area smelt of other dogs and was not a use-able space to relax or eat in. The gates were not at all secure which meant that our dog was able to get in to a garden three doors away from our property. The owner of that property did say that she very often has visiting dogs in her garden that leave 'deposits' for her!
Over all the cottage was very clean and in a perfect location to access the town and the beach.
We would recommend Algerine Cottage if the court yard problem could be addressed.

Brief notes
The outside courtyard was in need of cleaning and decorating, it was not good . Parking no problem after weekend . The road is a walk through with a low level of noise late at night, amplified by brick walls. We had a complaint from a neighbour, later retracted ) about talking on mobile phones outside our door . I apologised, but would not stay here again.
A minor point, the towel supply is poor, advise you take your own, large and fluffy ones. We bought some !
The white goods are excellent, as is the gas fire. Space downstairs good also

Good location, good overall but with some minor reservations
Overall a good cottage in a good location, but there are some minor things that could be better or could have been pointed out in the details. As highlighted by other people, we did not have any parking issues at the property during our stay. We also enjoyed seeing the local Alpaca trek walking past the cottage and using the slipway at the bottom of the road for crabbing.
Examples of information that could have been provided:
Ceiling height upstairs is reduced at the point you go to one of the bedrooms and the shower room - this caused my husband to cut his head on 3 occasions within 24 hours of arrival and he is 5ft 10inches tall (so far from being unusually tall).
The enclosed courtyard is enclosed by a low gate that is easy for a young child to open and not suitable for leaving a young child in unattended. We had a very active 3 year old with us who we had to keep out of the courtyard during our stay.
The upstairs windows are low and easy for a young child to open and fall out of. We had to keep them closed at all times with improvised ties used to prevent any unwelcome accidents.
There are no wardrobes in any of the bedrooms except one.
There are no locks on the bathroom or shower room doors.
Examples of things that could be improved:
The size/number of saucepans provided is inadequate for large parties doing much cooking - a wok would be helpful.
The floor had not been cleaned prior to our arrival and the mop that was left in the property stank and needing replacing. There were no cleaning products provided so we had to get some bleach and floor cleaner to clean the floor so that it was ok to be played on by the 3 year old.
The shower room is very small and would benefit from somewhere to put your toiletries in either the shower cubicle itself or within the room.
There were rodents in the roof that had been pointed out at least 2 weeks prior to our stay.
I have said I would recommend but this would be for people that are shorter than 5ft 7 inches, don't have small children and not to be a group bigger than 4 or 5.

Lovely cottage in a perfect location
Algerine Cottage is a lovel spacious cottage with everything you need for your stay. It was very clean and in a perfect location to walk to the quay and go crabbing, have fish and chips or in the arcade. It is a slightly longer walk to the beach so would advise the beach train or the car park.
Only let down was the customer service when i collected and dropped off the keys. Both times they were very dismissive of me and to be honest quite rude - as the face of your business it doesn't look good and if the customer service received via email before our stay would have been this way, i would have cancelled the booking and looked elsewhere

cottage handy for quay and town in general. lacks a dedicated car parking place.
Cottage would benefit from having 2 front door keys or an external wall key safe. Locks to the toilets would save accedental embarresment. The side passage has a yale lock but there is no key so you can exit the property but can not get return access.
On arrival it would have been useful had there been some basics such as tea bags, coffee, milk, and biscuits just small quantities would do.

Escape to Norfolk
We had a good rest , the cottage is sweet and in a lovely position.
It has a cosy log burner .
The seating is very uncomfortable for 7 people for a week and the mattress in the large bedroom was most uncomfortable.
A nice touch as we have had a other cottages is a welcome basket or a little something. A personal touch .
I would recommend it for a long weekend . Lovely position.

Great Location
We had a lovely time at Algerine. The office staff told us that the cleaner had broken her elbow that morning and was not able to clean the cottage before our arrival, however, they found a stand in and so everything worked out fine. One of the duvets wasn't made up, but I guess that was just an oversight. We also found a broken glass in the kitchen at time of arrival. The sofa was fairly uncomfortable and we recommend a better one to be put in. Also we recommend locks on the bathrooms, maybe even change the latches, when people got up in the night,it was noisy.
Apart from that the cottage was lovely and location perfect. Would recommend to others.

Easter stay at algerine
We had a terrific stay at algerine over Easter despite the weather. The cottage was spacious, close to the centre and well equipped, apart from the lack of a microwave and tv in the main bedroom. A welcome would have been appreciated as there was a 2 hour wait for the Asda delivery. Would definitely stay there again. Norfolk hideaways responded quickly to a couple of minor problems.

Lovely cottage but highlighted maintenance issues not being addressed. Courtyard need improvement
Lovely cottage but highlighted maintenance issues not being addressed. Courtyard need improvement - very basic and what greenery there is isn't being trimmed. Hot water is rather too hot - dangerous for children. Wheelybin emptying arrangements should be on the bin not just tucked in cottage folder.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Algerine. It is great to hear that you thought the cottage was lovely. It is such a great base to explore Wells and the amazing coastline in both directions.
Thank you for dropping by the office with your feedback. We have addressed the issues which you highlighted. The water temperature was turned up on the boiler by previous guests and has now been turned back down.
Thank you for your suggestion regarding the bin arrangements. The decision was made to keep all the house notes together in one place so that guests knew where to find them. Going forward we will certainly take your suggestion on board.
The owners of the cottage spend a lot of time and effort in making sure their guests have a great stay and I know that they will be very grateful for your feedback. Thank you once again for your review. Best wishes.. The Hideaways Team.
