With glorious views of the Coniston Hills and local fell ranges, Hayrake is in an ideal location, on the fringes of the village with all amenities close to hand. Built of Lakeland stone, the cottage is very characterful, with cosy rooms, exposed beams and that all important open fire, Hayrake is also home to other features that you’d expect from such an old property, including the odd squeaky floorboard and uneven floor! Emphasis is more on creating a homely atmosphere than frills and fanciness, however Hayrake is very comfortable and offers everything for the holidaymaker. On three floors, the views get better the higher you go so you may have to toss a coin to decide who will have the top room.

We had a comfortable stay here in a very cold January.
We had a comfortable stay here in a very cold January. Heating system and fire provide more than enough warmth. Kitchen is well equipped and lounge is cosy. Glad we took our own pillows though. Pleasant view from dining room towards Loughrigg/Coniston. Walk into Ambleside takes 5/10 mins which was no problem for us.

It's a lovely cottage, in a great location only a few minutes walk from the centre of Ambleside.
It's a lovely cottage, in a great location only a few minutes walk from the centre of Ambleside. There are also great walks from the door step, including the Fairfield horseshoe, Stock Ghyll Force, and Rydal Caves. Positives - cottage is cosy, kitchen is well-equipped, location is ideal.negatives - nothing major at all, just that the bedrooms on the top floor arent the best, as the beams are so low you can bang your head on them, the wifi doesnt reach the top floor, and some of the sockets didnt work. Also, the parking is tricky is you have a car that is low to the ground - ours scraped on the floor trying to get in and out of the drive way.

The cottage was excellent but the stress leading up to the check in was horrendous. I booked this on 21st or 23rd dec and had been asking for check in details of the property all the way up to the date of checkin. I only received the checkin details at 10am on the day of checkin. The cottage was some 6-7 hours drive and my plan was to leave my home very early in the morning to get there before the 4pm entry time. Due to this stress my family were rather upset and we ended up losing a day of the holiday as we were hoping to spend the day in the Lake District before checking in. It also meant I spent nearly the whole day on Boxing Day trying to contact the host and Vrbo with no success. I still do not know why the checkin details were provided so late and feel very disappointed by this. On reflection I feel we lost a day of our holiday and also suffered a day of stress beforehand. I feel some compensation should be offered
Great little cottage, with all you need for a holiday walking or otherwise enjoying everything the Lake District has to offer.

This is a lovely stone cottage within walking distance of Ambleside.
This is a lovely stone cottage within walking distance of Ambleside. Lovely views from the dining area. Tastefully decorated with quality bedlinen and towels and additional touches for the Christmas period. The open fire was a huge bonus and the kitchen is extremely well equipped. The only minus point was that although parking is adjacent to the house, it was challenging with a pickup truck because of access. However, would thoroughly recommend and stay here again.

Cosy for 4 but much better than the photos!
Any problems have been dealt with as we had no issues at all.
Well equipped kitchen for actual cooking, cosy lounge with real fire and some means to light it on arrival.
Roomy dining space with lovely views and loads of family games.
2 doubles and 2 singles ~ my only complaint (and it is a very common one) is the pillows. So common that we now try and bring our own. Nobody wants to sleep for a week on a poundland pillow.
When will owners of these properties understand that sleep is a massive factor in enjoying a holiday!?

We had a lovely week at Hayrake.
We had a lovely week at Hayrake. It’s ideally positioned within a short walk of the town centre.
The accommodation is quirky and it’s an old fashioned building with really thick walls. There is a beautiful view from the dining room. (Just as long as the hedge gets trimmed and isn’t allowed to get any taller).
The parking is ok but there is a drop off near the entrance so a bit of skill is required to drive in and out in a straight line. Two cars fit comfortably but again the hedge could do with being cut back as it’s very tight to get out of the car and walk in between the car and hedge.
I was impressed with the facilities inside the cottage. Even the hairdryers were brand new. Everything worked well and the kitchen is well equipped. The central heating worked a treat too. It’s lovely and quiet and everyone slept well.

Amazing place to stay.
Amazing place to stay. Great location. Beautiful views. Close to the centre of Ambleside as only a 5 minute walk in. Grrat tea room at the bottom of the hill. Old beams in the cottage and an open fire. Would definitely stay here again. Lots of games and jigsaws. Jigsaws need reviewing as some missing pieces. One of the best cottages we have stayed in. Attached picture is sunset from the lounge/diner window
