Pensway has often been described by guests as the ideal hideaway as well as being a perfect cottage for a couple with a young family. Pensway is a very welcoming, quaint cottage, set in the heart of the small village of Burpham, a ‘hamlet’ at the entrance to an ancient Anglo Saxon ‘burgh’, hence the name. As a one-time wheelwright’s cottage Pensway is set in the heart of the village which is buried deep in the South Downs National Park and is surrounded by the Duke of Norfolk’s estate. Burpham is a cul de sac, accessed along a country lane by the river Arun, two miles from Arundel. Whilst Pensway dates from the eighteenth century, with typical exposed beams and some low doorways, it has been sympathetically architect-renovated to a high standard, with a modern bathroom but a traditional-style kitchen, an oak-framed conservatory dining room and a cosy sitting room with a wood burner. The compact and secluded garden, which has two relaxing and dining areas, a barbecue and lounge chairs, has views of the surrounding countryside. Guests will be aware during most of the day of the sound of pheasants and buzzards whilst at night only owls spoil the silence because there is no through traffic. Burpham is famed locally as a walker’s paradise and guests will see hikers and mountain bikers regularly pass their doorstep on the route to the South Downs Way, a couple of miles across the hillside. Although Arundel has an exceptionally large number of good quality restaurants and cafés, Pensway itself is only a two-minute walk to a good-quality gastro pub at Burpham. Centred around its celebrated castle, Arundel has many summertime events including a medieval pageant and guests can enjoy its Jailhouse jazz club, its clock golf course and its antiques and small specialist shops. Burpham is easily accessible to the high-energy of Brighton and at the same time to the Georgian cathedral city of Chichester, with its nationally-celebrated theatre, art gallery and nearby Fishbourne Roman Villa. Within a short distance are many sandy beaches such as Climping and the Witterings, whilst guests can take boats on the river at Arundel and Houghton, take sailing lessons in Chichester harbour or learn how to surf at the cool new surfers’ Beachcafé at Littlehampton. Local outdoor activities include horse riding in Arundel and golf at Littlehampton, whilst birdwatching at Arundel’s Wetlife Centre is complemented by a first-hand experience of birds of prey at West Sussex Falconry. Whilst being easily accessible to all the cultural and activity centres in the South of England, Pensway is nevertheless the perfect rural escape. Beach 7 miles. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 220 yards.
