A stilt house which elevates you to the tree tops, Khan Cottage has a spectacular outlook over the Illawarra Escarpment and its own 135 acres of land. From the wraparound deck, hear the rush of the creeks after rainfall and the raucous call of rainforest birds and kookaburras in sunshine. Swing in the hammock with only the call of the Whip Birds to disturb you. You are looking out over one of the most successful rainforest regeneration projects in the region. South Coast beaches are a fifteen-minute drive away.
Despite our faraway feel, vibrant Berry with its many cafes and shops is a five-minute drive from the house. Seven Mile Beach and Gerroa Beach, boutique wineries and excellent restaurants are on our doorstep. You are also close to Kangaroo Valley and the stunning beaches of Jervis Bay National Park.
We, the owners, do not live on the property which means that the house, its environs, the mown path to the creek and beautiful views are all yours for the duration of your stay making Khan Cottage a very private and peaceful retreat for two to four people. It is located at the foot of the escarpment along Bundewallah Road which is itself a lovely long and rural lane along which to walk. A public walking track up to old-growth rainforest begins just past our lower gate. The cottage is a two-hour drive from Sydney, south along the new Princes Motorway.
Facilities
Khan Cottage is fully self-contained. The accommodation includes two bedrooms: one queensize with its own deck and one double bedroom, both supplied with quality linen and towels. The house is lovingly furnished and maintained and is equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, woodburning stove, gas heater, Bluetooth speaker with an aux cable for connection to your phone. There is no wi fi at the house. Khan Cottage is a place to enjoy its absence. Should you need access to the internet this is available at cafes in Berry where there is also 'in-town free wi fi' available 24 hours a day. Please note that there is a minimum two-night stay and the weekend tariff applies to both a Friday and Saturday night OR a Saturday and Sunday night. Two-nights midweek are charged at $650 (plus VRBO fees). The lower nightly rate applies after the initial two nights. Two person rates are for one-bedroom use.
Khan Cottage's rainforest restoration project
Over twenty years ago when we bought the land, our creeks - like most in the Illawarra - were dense privet, lantana and other weeds. Today they are regenerating Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest, a Critically Endangered Vegetation Community. It is a life-long endeavour to return as much of our property to this endangered rainforest as we can. To do so requires hard work in often unpleasant conditions and we have dedicated countless thousands of hours in labour and many tens of thousands of dollars to ensuring its success. We have been awarded Federal, State and local government grants to assist us towards this end. In March 2020, the property was granted Biodiversity Conservation status by the NSW government. This conservation status was awarded not because of any pre-existing vegetation on the property but because of the rare young rainforest that now stands where at the start of our tenure there grew only privet. Your stay at Khan Cottage enables us to continue financing this project.

The property was lovely, had great views and good amenities. It was missing some basics - the main bedroom didnโt have a window blind, thereโs no cooling upstairs and it was extremely hot. The host hadnโt cleaned up items from the previous guests which was odd.

Dear Tim,
Thank you for taking the time to review Khan Cottage - a review to which I must respond. I do wish you had first contacted me regarding your complaint about 'items' that had not been cleaned up after the prior guests' stay. I immediately spoke to my housekeeper with regard to this and she is at a loss to know to what you might be referring. Had you texted me with regard to such an issue at the time of your stay, I could have understood whether or not there was an oversight on her behalf and taken action over it.
With regard to the extreme heat over the weekend of your stay, floor fans are provided that can be moved anywhere in the house. However, the house, like so many, will heat up in these exceptionally high temperatures.
The blind I can do something about. Historically, I have chosen not to have one at the small window to better enjoy night breezes, the call of the Boobook Owl, frog song at night and bird song in the morning. However, I recognise that times have changed and people increasingly prefer a room darkened as much as possible, often sleeping with an eye mask. I will get a blind custom made for the window. This will take perhaps a couple of months to effect.
With kind regards,
Sara Jackson
We had an amazing stay in these picturesque surroundings! The host was responsive and helpful. A couple of quick notes for future travelers: one of the beds is a bit snug for two people (best suited for a couple), and there is no AC in the house, which is only really an issue on those very hot days. No coffee making facilities but Nescafรฉ was provided. Overall, a beautiful getaway!
Sara is a very attentive host. Provided clear information and followed up immediately on some problems we encountered. She resolved tg after we left. A gorgeous elevated cottage tasteful decorated and very comfortable over looking a stunning rainforest. Great little hide way. If you want peace n solitude.
Beautiful, tranquil, relaxing. The perfect getaway nestled in the rainforest surrounded by nature!

Beautiful, secluded property
My wife and I have been visiting Berry for weekend stays for many years. We were looking for a place that was peaceful and quiet, comfortable, well appointed, with a beautiful outlook over the rain forest. We found Khan Cottage and it was perfect! We loved our stay and we'll be organising another weekend there in the near future.
What a wonderful place to escape from it all! Just us and the forest and the birds (and the echidna, wombat and wallaby!) A beautiful location, a lovely house, completely private, but a short drive to Berry for anything we needed.
This is the 2nd time we have stayed at this property. The peace and quiet was just what we needed. The sounds of the birds and the stream was so relaxing. The house is beautiful and comfortable. Communication with the owner was great and will definately return again one day.
Magnificent way to unwind, relax and be in touch with nature. So secluded and peaceful sitting on the deck listening to the birds. We were treated to the sounds of a lyrebird give its full rendition of all the other birds of the bush for at least half an hour. The cottage was comfortable and well supplied with everything we needed. Such an enjoyable and rejuvanating time away.
Beautiful location and close to shops and local attractions. Only feedback was that it was unbearably hot during the day and without aircon, ceiling fans or stand fans, we went out during the day rather than suffer through the heat. The large doors bring a wonderful breeze in but without screens, the bugs put a stop to that.Overall was a wonderful place and it'd be amazing in the winter with the fire and view.Host was great and communicated regularly and clearly.

Thank you, Chris, for taking the time to write a review of Khan Cottage. You stayed over an exceptionally hot weekend. Floor fans (including a 'Vornado') are provided. Insects do not enter open doors during the day. A through breeze is generated by hooking open the front door and opening the glass doors. Doors cannot be left open once it is dark and lights are on in the house. Flyscreens are up at the windows. Windows should be left open during the day when it is hot if guests are out.

Stayed 3 nights at Khan Cottage. It was immaculate and wonderful. Just the tonic needed for some rest, relaxation and contemplation. Feels so secluded seems like itโs a million miles from anywhere but still really close to Berry!! I tried to count the different birds singing and there were so many I lost track. Spent hours in the hammock. Loved it.
We spent a very cosy two nights at Khan cottage. It was so warm with the fire roaring. We saw and heard many different birds, as well as kangaroos and an echidna!
Beds were warm and comfortable, everything was clean and easy. Berry is about a 10 minute drive, and we loved popping out to get coffee and lunch there, as well as visiting the shops and the markets.
The TV/DVD was not working which was a little disappointing but it was actually really lovely to switch off anyway! We had limited phone reception but were prepared for this, and that was fine :)
Overall a gorgeous spot and we would definitely come back.

Thank you, Madeline, for taking the time to review Khan Cottage. It is possible the issue with the TV was to do with the DVD rather than the television. My housekeeper found it functioning after your stay and I have since stayed a week playing DVDs each day to be sure!

Dark nights and Green days. Surrounded by trees during the day with the sounds of fast flowing water close by ever present. The living space had light through many windows and doors. The small & well placed kitchen was modern and appropriate.
The bedrooms were snug and comforting. Small thoughtfully placed windows became pictures to the outside trees and sky on the journey between the living and sleeping floors.
From the outside the house appears old and somewhat precarious. Inside it is modern, robust and made of simple but effective materials.
Khan Cottage is well suited to those that want solitude and respite from the electronic noise of contemporary life.
Make sure you take a few books and your favourite music.
Wonderful place to stay if you want to really unwind and relax. Very peaceful and quiet with everything you need. Would recommend to family and friends.
Comprehensively equipped. Immaculately maintained and presented. A skip and a jump from the highway but total peace in what now amounts to a mini-national park. A gem.
Such a beautiful location and house combination. Simple but very comfortable. Loved sitting out on the balcony gazing into the forest canopy and hills. Close to town but felt miles away.
We had lyrebirds, Gang Gang and black cockatoos, catbirds and an Echidna all close by the house. Thanks Sara.
Khan Cottage is like a grown-up treehouse. There is a view of beautiful trees from every window (and there are many). It was so relaxing to sit on the balcony and listen to the birds and the rustle of the trees and enjoy the tranquility. The bedrooms were very comfortable and bathroom seemed to be newly furnished. A wonderful place to get away from the big smoke.
Absolutely loved our stay. Waking up in the morning to the sound of the stream and birds was a delight. The verandah and hammock a perfect way to spend a morning, afternoon and evening. The only downside was the lack of internet, no wifi and next to no mobile service at the house. Loved everything else though.
