Cozy and quiet stay at the Slate House
Cherie's place was wonderful! My husband and I spent four nights here for our visit to Acadia and loved it. It is tucked back in the woods on a beautiful property and was very quiet and peaceful, which was lovely to come back to every evening after the hustle and bustle of the park and Bar Harbor. The kitchen was very well equipped and we cooked lots of our meals at the house. Cherie was an excellent host and was very communicative and happy to answer any questions. Would love to stay again the next time we visit the area.

Slate House is fantastic!
We had a wonderful time staying at the Slate House. Cherie is providing a house that is relaxing and surrounds you with everything you need to feed your spirit! The house itself is very special. The house is nestled in the woods with perennial gardens. Within the house you will be surrounded by art. The house itself is situated just 3 miles from the Southwest Harbor and within 3 miles of Acadia west island hiking trails. You will be a max of a 20 minutes drive to the Acadia National Park Beach entrance. Thank you to Cherie for sharing her house.

Lovely Retreat on the Quietside
From the moment I drove down the gravel drive to Cheri's hideaway, I just knew my stay would be wonderful. The acres of pines and birches, the hillsides filled with gardens welcomed me with beauty. Cheri is a delightful homeowner, kind and giving and her home is designed and decorated with her artistic flair. Everything one could need or want is provided for and more. We enjoyed all of the art on the walls and the views out of the many windows. It was so enjoyable seeing the garden blossoms emerge each day. I would highly recommend this little piece of paradise.

Tranquil, beautiful home on the quiet side of Mt Desert Island
This is a beautiful, well cared for and loved, home-- both tucked away and peaceful and yet so very close to all the Acadia attractions -- the best of both worlds! Cherie is a wonderful host, an amazing artisan, and generous with very useful 'insider' tips to make your stay on the island perfect. We were only able to stay 6 days, but in that time, hiked, kayaked, swam, and rode our bikes-- and our only regret is not having more time to spend just relaxing in and around the house! This house, like the beautiful jewelry Cherie makes, is a gem! The trick is finding time available! We will definitely return!

As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. In college I studied arts and languages (B.A. in french and fine arts, Tufts); I grew up in the Northeast and have lived in Maine since 1974

Why they chose this property

When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1983, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life included co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 2015, 32 years!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....

What makes this property unique

One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.
