About this property

Fish, Soak, Play | River Song Retreat | Bring the Dogs!

Reconnect with nature at River Song Retreat, a log cabin tucked into the bend of Helton Creek, an Ashe County favorite for trout fishing. Bring Fido (up to two 45lb pups welcome)! Soak in the hot tub, rally in a game of ping pong, and watch the creek roll by from the wraparound deck. It's a fisherman's dream.
--------------------------------------------
Indoor Spaces
- Sleeping arrangements: Sleeps 10. Primary bedroom with queen-size bed and en suite bathroom (main level), second bedroom with four twin beds – two single level, one bunk bed (upper level), third bedroom with queen-size bed and en suite bathroom (lower level), and a full-size sleeper sofa (upper level).
- Main level: With a sky-high ceiling and a fireplace that begs for stories, the great room is the heart of this home. Sip something good at the kitchen bar, sneak out to the deck from the main bedroom, or curl up and watch a good film together.
- Upper level: Upstairs is the kids' domain, or adults who are still kids at heart. A separate entertainment area and TV connect to the bunk bed base camp. Spread out on the sprawling catwalk over the great room and open loft.
- Lower level: The lower level is a world of its own. Below is an entire apartment with its own kitchen, bedroom, dining, living, and entertainment areas. You also have exterior access to the lower level (anyone up for some night fishing?).
- River Song Retreat comes with WiFi, AC, and streaming services.
--------------------------------------------
Outdoor Spaces
- Ready to fish? River Song is steps away from Helton Creek, the trout fishing hub.
- Get active in the expansive flat yard running along the water's edge (don't forget to bring your favorite outdoor games, kites, soccer balls, etc.)
- Chill out and stargaze in the outdoor seating around a fire pit found in the yard.
- Watch for woodland creatures from the wraparound deck.
- Soak and decompress in the hot tub below the deck (access from lower level).
--------------------------------------------
Local Surroundings
- Your pick of adventures awaits. River Song Retreat is within a 25-minute drive of most of Ashe County's popular areas. You'll be situated just north of Crumpler and Shatley Springs, a few short miles from the New River. To the west, Lansing and its quaint, small-town delights. Further south is downtown West Jefferson itself, the heart of Ashe County's culture and home to restaurants, breweries, antiques, art galleries, and even a cheese factory.
- Less than 15 minutes from the cabin is the River House Inn & Restaurant, an unforgettable dining experience tucked away in the more rural part of the county. Beloved by locals, River House offers true fine dining and a full-service bar.
- While you're within 25 minutes of downtown hubbub, you're also within arm's reach of so many exciting excursions. Head to Burnt Hill Stables for horseback riding, or mosey on over to Phipps General Store on a Friday night to hear the “pickin” – local musicians jammin' together just for the sake of the music.
- If it's warm and sunny, head out on the river with one of the many local canoe outfitters, or drive 30 minutes to explore Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia (look out for the miniature ponies!).
--------------------------------------------
Important Notes
- Pet Policy: Dogs welcome! Up to two 45lb dogs may stay. Must be two years or older and leash- and crate-trained. $100 per pet, nonrefundable.
- Access: Warning, gravel road ahead. We do not recommend low-profile vehicles. 4WD is not necessary unless inclement weather awaits. If you're visiting in the winter, we definitely recommend 4WD or AWD.
- Security Disclaimers: We watch out for wildlife, too. External cameras keep an eye out over outside spaces like the driveway and entry for your safety.

Recent Stay

Overall the stay was nice and clean. Upon moving some furniture for game night and movies we noticed a lot of dirt and debris under and around the sofas. The driveway was a nightmare getting up to the house and parking, backing out was very dangerous, there was limited car control forward or in reverse. The 1.5 miles driving to the house, also unsteady and washed out. Luckily, we were in a 4-wheel drive and we were able to make it.

Peace and relaxation

Incredible. The kids never got bored. They floated in the river/stream. Played tons of ping pong and basketball. Roasted marshmallows on the fire-pit. Caught lots of trout and crayfish. Dips in the hot tub. The place was clean. Kitchen wasn’t as stocked with dishes etc as most places I’ve stayed, but it had enough. Be aware, there’s a long bumpy dirt road to this property. You can get to the house with most vehicles I think but without 4 wheel drive, you won’t get up the driveway to park next to the house. And it’s a steep walk up from where you can park down below. Just a heads up for elderly or people with some physical challenges.

Beautiful property! We enjoyed our stay. House was stocked with everything we needed and more. Beds were comfortable and the views amazing! We enjoyed trout fishing and sitting by the fire. We shopped, visited Grayson Highlands State Park, Mount Jefferson Natural Area, New River State Park and Grandfather Mountain. We fished and many lakes and creeks in Lansing, West Jefferson and Blowing Rock. We shopped in Boone and West Jefferson and visited Ashe County cheese and Mast General Store. What a fun week!!!
