Picturesque home away from home
Eugenia’s home offered a true piece of heaven overlooking the serene landscape adjoining Lake Oberon. We drove past admiring the breath taking view with giant granite boulders dotted all along the water’s edge, and sheep peacefully grazing on the hills, not realising this would be our vista for the weekend. Her home is welcoming and clean, and well adorned with her travels and interests, which make for a relaxing place for visitors wanting to unwind and indulge in some reading or board games, or enjoy some of the delicious cheeses, bread and wine she kindly gifts her guests, whilst seated enjoying the waterscape and peaceful surroundings, or the cosiness of the indoor spaces. The beds are all very comfortable, and the rooms are all beautifully tranquil with lots of bedding and blankets to snuggle up warm. Her home is stocked with everything one may need. We travelled our 3&6 year old girls and had every need met to easily self cater. The provided milk and eggs and spreads were also a nice touch - our girls thought this was the lux farm life and never enjoyed eggs, butter, vegemite, pb&j on toast that much! There are easy walking and running paths to and around the lake, and people may easily fish there too. Eugenia was very responsive and forward thinking with her communications, and very accommodating. She also offered many suggestions of activities and places of interest, with information about possible travel restrictions too. Altogether we had a wonderful stay.

About the host

Host profile image
Having resided in Brisbane for nearly four decades, I relocated to Sydney in 2004. My career was in finance, but now I'm enjoying retirement in the tranquil town of Oberon. Traveling and connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds is a passion of mine. My journeys have taken me to places like China, Dubai, Singapore, Russia, Amsterdam, and various European locales. Paris, Russia, and Italy rank as my top travel spots. The history of my ancestors, who lived through tumultuous times, inspired me to author a book about their experiences. In honour of my mother, I've named my property Dacha Savin, which translates to 'Savin Resort,' with 'Savin' being her maiden name. As a host, I cherish the opportunity to share my abode.

Why they chose this property

My affection for Oberon stems from its picturesque rural setting and exceptionally welcoming community. Unquestionably, Oberon is not just an ideal place to reside but also a perfect retreat from urban life to the tranquility of the mountains. Situated on a plateau at an elevation of 1130 meters above sea level, this charming town is renowned for its mild summers, snowy winters, and four distinct seasons. The seasonal transitions are a display of vivid colors, complemented by Oberon's own alpine lake. In 1863, the town changed its name from Bullock Flats to Oberon, inspired by the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night’s Dream." Oberon boasts a rich history and heritage, with notable structures such as the National Australia Bank building, St Barnabas Anglican Church, and the Art Deco-styled Malachi Gilmore Hall.

What makes this property unique

The estate offers private access to an alpine lake, which is routinely stocked with Rainbow Trout and Golden Perch, allowing for enjoyable fishing throughout most of the year. For those who prefer not to fish, the property also boasts a splendid view of the lake and its surrounding natural splendor, all visible from the comfort of the home.
